I think you'll be lucky to get it down to 32 pounds with a 100 but more importantly I don't think it will balance with a 100. Good luck with your project.

interesting project!! i will definitely enjoy seeing your progress!!

i tend to agree with albert and wayne also.

you might want to look at the evolution 116 engine from horizon hobby. its about 1 pound heavier than the DA, which will help with balance. also it has more power than the DA, which will help with power and turn a bigger prop (30x10 i think). AND on top of those, its the same price!!

I really enjoy seeing these ambitious projects. I'll also be watching this one as it goes on. For what it's worth, here's a couple of inital thoughts.

If you had to, you could consider moving the wing tube back- maybe as much as an inch. This would help with your balance.

With regards to engines, the DA 100 is an excellent engine- and would (and routinely does) power a 28lb plane nicely. For "killer" power, most any 100cc class engine would probably be at the upper limit at this weight. Also factor in that it's not only the weight of the plane but also the sheer additional size that would need to be yanked around.

I have never actually weighed an engine but, going from the various distributor's websites, you might find this information interesting:

DA100 5.8lbs
Evolution 116 6.86lbs
ZDZ 160 Champion 6.5lbs.

Even at say 30-32lb, a 40% Carden 260 with a 160 would be insane.

Just food for thought.

Dave

I like what you're doing with the motor box. Even with that, you've got quite a lot more weight to take out to get to 28lbs. I hope you make it! At this point, you might want to think of pull-pull rudder AND elevators as you might need to take the elevator servo weight out of the tail to balance something like the BME. Easier to design it now than after you're covered and painted.

Best of luck with your goal...........Mark

Interesting indeed.

Are you planning on using the sheeting that came with the plane & are you going to use a CF wing tube, stab tube & landing gear?

...and good luck.

There will be a very small amount of sheeting........only in places it has to be!

If that's all the sides are getting, would it have made more sense to only use the diagonal pieces? That would have been a stronger method than just the verticals.

I look at this with great "enthusiasm" as I take great lengths to realistically remove weight from my builds. The light side of a 40% Carden 260 is 37lbs with a DA150 with canisters. This plane can and has been done lighter but I think 37 a realistic light plane. Canisters add roughly 1-1/2 lbs. A DA 100 for all practical purposes weighs 6lbs and the 150 about 8lbs. Looking at this projected 28 lbs makes me wonder...37lbs minus canisters 1-1/2 minus 2lb engine weight comes to 34lbs with cowl mufflers. This leaves 6 lbs of wood and foam to remove from a already considerable light plane considering this was from a 37lb reference. How did you come to the 28lb target weight???This plane takes 29 sheets of sheeting to do the wings. Cardens stock for sheeting is roughly 1oz per sheet. Lets not sheet the wings so there's another 29oz's or 1lb 13 oz's. Still got 4 lbs to go from an already light number with no sheeting on the wings period..I wonder???Have you calculated this number out or is it just a guessed target..Regards Walt

28lbs is a lofty goal no doubt! With the mods already shown in the pics it seems someone has done at least a little homework to determine the final goal. I haven't seen anyone else get anywhere near this agressive on reducing weight! Personally, I hope he meets it!! I'm looking forward to watching this one take shape. I'm sure there will be lots of ideas I can mooch and possibly use in future projects of my own.

I vote everyone should just stand back and let this guy show us what he's got!!

I think the motor box top plate goes on after the fuse sides are attachted to the motor box. With the plate on the box is an 1/8 down.[X(]

Does that mean the wings, stab, fin/rudder will be "built up" & the fuse sides will be "open bay"?

How about the bottom & turtle deck?

You have raised some very interesting points but Stay tuned my friend......... Stay tuned

I once heard a gentleman say shoot for the moon and even if you miss you will be amongst the stars……….

By shooting for 28 (moon) even if I miss I will still be much less than 37………..(stars)

This hobby is about many things. Some of which are experimenting, playing and learning. I am all for your thread 260 man, and I hope to learn from it. If anyone picks up just one nugget it was time well spent.

So Thank You for doing it! ...on with the build nay sayers need not apply...

I agree, seeing the modifications that are being made it might be under 30lbs, but will it be safe. When you build and fly Giant Scale planes you have a responsibility to make sure you are being safe. This project makes no sence. Why would you want to fly a 40% airplane with a 100cc motor? There are other motors you could choose if you want to make a light plane. IMO this is just a wast of a plane.
