RE: Carden 40% Extra 300 midwing ????????
Hi Jerry,
I am presently building a 40% Extra 300 mid wing. My plans show counter balances however I dont intend to have them. Reasons being ease of construction.
This is how I rationalize the above statement.
Aerodynamically they are there to lighten the stick forces, reduce the onset of flutter. If you do a good job with the linkages with no slop, stiff (without flexing) flutter shouldnt occur. If you use servos which have metal gears and plenty of torque no need to lighten the stick forces.
I have just had a look at some picture galleries and most don't have them.
Hope this helps.

RE: Carden 40% Extra 300 midwing ????????
Jerry: The counter balances are in place on the Carden planes for the reasons just as Airturer has stated. With them you will also find yourself not needing quite the deflection in throw to get the same results in pitch since the counterbalances also add elevator area. I've owned four Extra 330's and have an Extra 300 mid wing part built. My 300 will have the counter balances. They are legal in competition.

The plans for the stabs show counter balances as well as a side note indicating they are for the 330. Same plans are used for the 300, 330 and 260.
