today i received kit#1. dennis sent the wood so i can start while he cuts the cores.like every other kit in his line, the packing and wood is perfect. 1st up is to lighted the engine box. the pieces shown weigh 26OZ, we'll see what we can save here.

ok, a little work with the drill press and some hole cutters and now the parts weigh 19 oz. a savings of 7 oz. next the firewall and gear plate will get the same treatment.

after a day off to fly i started the fuse sides. with the uprights precut, the basic frame goes quickly. the diagonals take a little time, but a cutting board and a sharp razor knife make it easy

for a accurate second side, i use a carryover from my stick and tissue days as a kid, i build the second side directly over the first. i cover the frame with a layer of wax paper and copy the first exactly.

the fuse side sheeting is next. each side uses 3 pcs of the 1/8" sheeting

Bob,

What glue are using? (looks like CA) Is it different from sticks, to the sheeting for the sides? Do you limit the epoxy to the plywood parts?

all thin and thick ca. i only use epoxy on hardwood joints. hardwood to hardwood is 30 min and hardwood to foam is 5 min

the engine box is next. i clamp all pieces in place and square it up, but i only glue 1 pc at a time. the wing tube socket is only in place to help with alignment. the total weight saved with all the holes was 8 1/2 oz.

Hey guys, Im also waiting for my plane to arrive. Talked to Caroline last week and she said they will ship late in the week. Cant wait to get it. Bobt keep the info coming. I will be following your thread closely do to my lack of build experiance. Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!

kevin, the weather here in the ne was too nice to build.lots of flying and a last shot at boating. tomorrow nite i'll add the fuse sides to the box.

Wish we had that weather. Its beed snowing here in N.Idaho all day. I have been on the simulator most of the day. I will be watching your build. Have fun.

good news, the rest of the kit will be here wednesday!first up today was adding the 1/8 dowel to the engine box. the first side was then glued to f-2. following my son robs lead i elected not to precut the socket holes in the sides. after the glue dried i took a sharpened tube socket and passed it thru the engine box and cut the hole. after adding the second side i reversed the process. i then added the doublers and glued in f-4's. i also precut the cross braces and pinned them in place to insure perfect alignment. they will be glued later

I'll be watching this thread as it progresses. This could be my next project.

You saved 8.5 oz. with the lightning holes.....that sounds worthwhile! Do you think the structural integrity has been compromised to much with all the holes? I've always thought Carden airplanes are a little "overbuilt"....especially when compared to ARF's. That never really bothered me since I actually liked the increased strength. But 8.5 oz. weight savings may change my mind.....

Most people are getting tremendous amounts of weight out of Carden's now.
This new Carden 300 is being build for me and the builder shaved 24 oz's out of my motor box. (40% Extra 300)

My Carden 260 was built over the summer with the same methods as this new 300. Its 37.2 lbs RTF. A stock Carden with cannisters is generally 41-43 pounds.
Lots of flights on it. Not a single issue with durability.

you may have a strength issue if it comes down on the nose, otherwise no issues.

if anyone following this thread is ready to start cutting sheeting, DO NOT cut the stab sheeting to 18". cut it to 24"

yep! it should be cut to 24" as per dennis
