I think I'm going to reach my target weight without removing any more core from the wing. The next 3 to 4 weeks will prove very interesting.

Here are a couple more pictures and some factual weight figures on covering. Each component was weighed before covering and after. The pictures of the 260 are with all aileron and elevator servos installed. The weights listed below are covering weight only.
Horizontal stabs 4 grams each. Elevators 10 grams each. Rudder 15 grams. Ailerons 20 grams each. Wings 75 grams each. Fuse 160 grams. Total 373 grams. Now, I can't speak for the other colors but with the dark red; the clear backing weight was the same as the covering. I took one piece 36" x 55" for the wing and peeled the backing off. Both came in at 1.8 ozs. Each, don't take my word for it just try it. |

It is the switches and charging jacks, the final weight is still just a few days away, and I will post it upon completion.

I am using a plastic Dr Pepper bottle; the weight with installation balsa is 2.3 ozs. Considerably lighter than the nearly 7 oz. tank without Velcro I originally purchased for the project.

Thanks and keep then coming, they really help us become better builders. Questions: a) Does the Dr. Pepper bottle develop leaks in the cap? Do you seal it with? Does it last as much as a regular tank? Does it become brittle with time and vibration? Any worries? b) I noticed the round hole in the front of the cowl just in front of the carburator is open. Does it create turbulence problems inside the cowl? Should it be open or closed? Does it matter? Happy Flying George |

Happy Flying George Yes I will seal the cap with De Soto PRC 890 B1/2 mill spec tank sealant, also this sealant will be used to scotch the tank to the balsa frames, this stuff cures as a fairly tough rubber that is used to seal leaks in full scale tanks for jet A fuel and gasoline. The tank is 33.8 fluid oz. tank so it will last just a little longer then normal. I don't like the way the hole looks plugged and painted so I am going to place a balsa deflector in the cowl blacked out after the cowl is painted. Bob |

Looks great Bob! I've heard that red covering both in monokote and ultracote is the lightest color. Do you know about how much wieght you saved using all red? (sorry if this has already been brought up)

Bob had all this data at one time. We did come to the conclusion that Red covering is lighter than any other color besides the transparent colors. I tried to get him to use trans red but just didn't budge!!! Jason ps Why are you not flying the ETOC?? |

Here are a couple more pictures, looks like with paint and Monokote on the canopy frame it is going to be every bit of 27 lbs. 8 ozs. The c/g is currently .375" behind the recommended c/g but I like them a little tail heavy.

ORIGINAL: BBW Walt I look at this with great "enthusiasm" as I take great lengths to realistically remove weight from my builds. The light side of a 40% Carden 260 is 37lbs with a DA150 with canisters. This plane can and has been done lighter but I think 37 a realistic light plane. Canisters add roughly 1-1/2 lbs. A DA 100 for all practical purposes weighs 6lbs and the 150 about 8lbs. Looking at this projected 28 lbs makes me wonder...37lbs minus canisters 1-1/2 minus 2lb engine weight comes to 34lbs with cowl mufflers. This leaves 6 lbs of wood and foam to remove from a already considerable light plane considering this was from a 37lb reference. How did you come to the 28lb target weight???This plane takes 29 sheets of sheeting to do the wings. Cardens stock for sheeting is roughly 1oz per sheet. Lets not sheet the wings so there's another 29oz's or 1lb 13 oz's. Still got 4 lbs to go from an already light number with no sheeting on the wings period..I wonder???Have you calculated this number out or is it just a guessed target..Regards Walt Bob |

The 260 is finally finished and although I wanted it to be just a touch lighter the final weight is 27lbs. 15.4 ozs. The first flight is scheduled for next Saturday with video.
