RE: GST Arrived....... OUCH!!!!!!!
Here are some pics of my piston and HSN. One of the reasons that the outside of the plug is black is because it doesnt look like its sitting flush with the engine, it looks like its on an angle, so fuel might be coming out and burning on it.

Well I'm fairly new to the Nitro scene, and I've heard it's not the best to switch fuels, but I did and it hasn't done anything to my motor, it runs stronger now then ever.
Are those dents in the top of your piston??? Well the motor was definitely at over 280F to make the piston that dark, it doesn't look horrible but it should be a nice light/golden brown.. A good visual indicator is if you suspect your motor is running hot if it stalls or you shut it off if you can hear fuel bubbling inside the motor, or the heat sink is smoking or making noises like it's cooling down, those are sometimes indicators it's running too hot, also there's the spit test, if it bubbles it's too hot, etc..
As for the HSN, it's really hard to say, I like to tune by temperature. How does it idle, smooth? When you do a full throttle run and then let it idle how long does it stay at higher RPMs before dropping down to normal idle RPMs? I have my LSN tuned so after a full throttle run it stays at higher RPMs then idle for about 5-7 seconds, then it'll drop down to idle RPMs.

It probably is running hot, I can sometimes see the heat coming off the head, I have yet to cut a hole in the windshield, I should probably do that. It seems to idle fine, but I did hear a strange noise the other day from the engine, possibly what you were saying about it cooling down. When I full throtle then let it idle it kinda sounds like its reving a bit more in a sputtering pattern. Im really not sure, it wont get it running until wednesday when my new plugs come.

I actually cut out my entire windshield, people were telling me it would be too weak and it would break the first time I crash, etc. I've flipped this truck 20+ times and the only thing I've done to the body is messed up the rear body mount holes just a tiny bit.
Hmm, it almost sounds like your LSN might be too lean, how long does it idle high before dropping back down into it's normal idle level? It should be at least 5 seconds minimum.. Also similar goes for pinching the fuel line at the carb to shut it off, if it takes more then 5 seconds to die the LSN is too rich.
You'll get it dialed in, it just takes a few tanks of fuel to do it.

I can't tell from those pics, try moving the camera physically back from what you're taking a picture of, if you don't have a Macro setting on your camera then you usually have to be at least 12" away. And yes it could be an air leak but without a temp gauge there's not really any easy way to check for that, besides teaching your motor how to swim maybe..

That doesn't sound right, the glow plug should be flush and flat against the button. Is it cross-threaded? It could be leaking from that for sure! Do you see all sorts of fuel or stuff inside the heatsink next to where the glow plug would be? It may bubble while running too..

You can get the head button at CENdirect or www.customrccars.com I would also replace the piston and sleeve, that piston looks like it's seen better days. Where in MA do you live, I can help you out if you need it.

Acutally this piston is fine, it had some stuff on it i took it off and now it looks ok, it was like a hair or something. I might get it off ebay for dirt cheap. I live in Northborough, a little east of Worcester.

IT sounds like you were runnnig hot, could be because it was running to lean or you have a air leak, The best thing to do would be to pull the engine out, replace the head button and seal the carb and backplate with sensor safe sealant.

Well it's my understanding that the button is made out of Aluminum which is a softer metal then the glow plug which is made out of steel, which makes it really easy to strip out. I'm always super careful when installing or removing my glow plugs to make sure I don't cross-thread the button or over-tighten it.. It just needs to be snug, not tight. Also it's a good idea before you install a glow plug, line it up with the hole, and turn it counter-clockwise like you're taking it out until you feel the thread click sorta, then it should be lined up..

You should also pick up some Associated green slime, put a little on the o-rings and it helps to prevent them from drying out and cracking. You can get this at www.towerhobbies.com the item number is 1105

IF you get the sensor safe sealant, the best way to do it is to apply a little at the end of a zip tie and go around the base of the carb and the backplate.
