Fiberglass Tiporare and Atlas Molds?
Hi Everyone,
I have a fiberglass Tiporare and Atlas in my collection that I am willing to send to Don so he can make molds if there is enough interest out there. Both are new and should make excellent plugs for the molds. Please let me know how much interest is out there for these two classic pattern planes. Others have been generous and shared their classics. I would like to do the same so we can all enjoy.

There are more fuses/molds on the way to Don, Tipo’s just happen to be in the box, but no Atlas.
It’s all about the generosity and sharing of these classic, otherwise all we can do is talk about what was. I’m more about what will be.

Paul and All,
This is great and what it should be about. I will plan on shipping the Atlas since you have a Tipo on the way. Any interest out there for the Fliteglas, Sky Night 6 ?

RE: Fiberglass Tiporare and Atlas Molds?
Speaking of Tipo's I have two in my shop and I considered sending one of them to Don were he interested (and all of us too of course). Unfortunately they are technically no longer mine so I was unable to do so. On the other hand, I traded my Tipo for an Illusion (which is in the US) and so I thought that given the rarity of the Illusion, it might be an interesting alternative to the Tipo.
With that said, I have to say that I'd be very tempted to pick up a replacement Tipo now that one is on the way to Don (thanks Don and Paul). By the way Paul, around what vintage is your fuse? Did it have side reinforcing strips in addition to the top and bottom strips. These were the first fuses produced and were heavier but much more solid. I have one of the first 20 fuses that came out of the GP kits (no reduced plans on those first kits) and it is strong but also heavy. The other one I have is considerably lighter (1/2 lb?) but also thinner and more flexible. I assume we're talking about original Tipo 720's?
One of the things I found useful with the side reinforced fuse is that it provided a reference line and support for installation of both servo and tank plates. The support happened to be positioned at exactly the right height for both of these wood parts. In any case, once Don has cast a mold, the fuse can be laid up to any desired weight and/or strength.
Luckily, I have at least one set of cores down in the shop ready to go (but little time these days...)
Any thoughts on the Illusion? Paul, is one on the way as well?
David.

Don,
I would say that the collection of molds that you will have pretty soon will be unique world wide. I hope your shop is well insured! The loss of those molds would be tragic to say the least.
Thanks for all your hard work and preservation efforts.
David.

RE: Fiberglass Tiporare and Atlas Molds?
Don,
I'm making arrangements to send you mine.
And yes, it is the original 720 (there was no 725). Wings and stabs to be built are per Dick's Model Builder plans. Of note, the planform of the flying surfaces is ever so slightly different from the planform of the wings supplied by Great Planes in the early 80's. I prefer the planforms shown on the plans. The tips are slightly assymetric while the tip blocks supplied by GP were even "oval" blocks.

You are sending the fuse only right? I can cut cores from the plans. I have the Dick Hansen plan that was from Model Builder Magazine, just want to be sure I have the right plan.
