Ok.. I'm just thinking about how I'm going to restore my Atlanta60. It came with a nice old Rossi 61 FIRE and matching pipe.
I pretty much know nothing of the Rossi line, so...
My question is, how good are these engines.. really? Is it worth keeping it in an Atlanta?

Rossi's are very strong running engines. I have a Rossi FIRE 61 in my Dalotel. See Attached pics. The Rossi pulls the plane around very well even though the plane is a bit on the heavy side with its built up fuse and sheeted foam wings. Even though your Rossi may not have the power of a YS, neither will almost anything else. I'd say try it in your Atlanta and see how you like and if you don't, then you can try a different motor.

My Atalanta’s in the 80’s were powered with Rossi’s, Ballistic power.

Think of Rossi,OPS,and Picco as you would of Ferrari.

Assuming that you motor is in good mechanical shape, (probably need a set of bearings) you’ll be very surprised with the brute power if set up correctly.
It’s not an O.S. !

Just a little note about the Atlanta airframe, due to the location of the tank you might encounter flooding issues with the motor so clamping the fuel line is a must at startup and shutdown.

I'm a diehard OS/YS guy, but back in the BPA/classic pattern days most of the pattern guys (6-8 regular competitors) I flew with in my old club used Rossi engines. My assessment of them is that they had nearly the power of a YS with almost the ease of operation and reliability of an OS. VERY durable - Rossi engines could withstand lean runs better than any other engine I've seen. They could be flown right out of the box, but maximum power usually required an hour or so of running time.

Agree with flywilly. The 61 FIRE Rossi I am running is very reliably, easy to tune and turns a 11x8 Graupner (little wider blade a APC I would say) at 13.600 on 15% synth oil, 8% nitro and a copy of a Hatori tuned pipe. Throttle response is very instant.

I had to learn to flip start the Rossi against running direction, just to the point when compression is felt - then it kicks the prop over in running direction and starts up. Starting it the normal way resulted in 2 broken propeller trailing edges, since it kept kicking back wildly - never had this issue with my OS RF 61, Webra 61 or MVVS 61.

Hi,

I had a Rossi 61 FI RC ABC rear exhaust with pipe in a Mach 1 in 1977 and that engine had great power and was very reliable. I had servo controlled needle control on my Rossi. The pipe back then had an O-ring inside the front part of the pipe so You just slided the pipe back-forward to tune it.

I remember someone posted a chart that showed a few (4 I believe) engines and their performance on a graph. This show peak RPM prop size, etc.. awsome info.It had the Webra, OS,YS, andI think the Rossi as well. Wish I knew the name of the thread.

That's a useful chart, but I think the information referred to actually came from Germany and had torque curves and other performance data. Of course, I can't find it either [>:].
