For those that have not known Don personally, he designed a pattern plane called Demion. If memory serves me, it was in the early to mid 80's. It was flown primarly in the Denver and Colorado region. Extremely solid flyer. If anyone has a set of plans, I would be interested in purchasing a copy.

Guys, this is Don Atwood. My Demian design was a modification to the original Curare. The primary differences are the airfoil and simplified construction. At altitude (I lived in Denver at the time) the Curare had a very unpredictable stall which made landings a bit 'tricky' particularly in the wind. I changed the airfoil and a few other things and flew the design successfully for several years.
There was a second, larger version of the Demian which flew very well at altitude, but we just didn't have enough power available then to pull it well enough for competition. It had 1/64" plywood sheeted foam wing and stab, one of our newer engines would have been a great addition to that plane!!!
I will look for the plans and would be happy to share if I can find them in my shop. No promises tho, small animals and children have been known to wander off into my shop to never be seen again.

Don,
sounds great - look forward!
I like the idea of another variation of the Curare (Demian, Tiporare).
Any updates on the availability of your book?
David.

OK Guys, here is an update. I met with Bruce Thompson while on a family trip. He has agreed to turn over the rights to the book (ie I get to determine what to do with it). My plan is to scan it into a PDF format and make it available in the near future. Please bear with me as we get this set up. Will post new information here asap.

Guys, a quick update. I have the PDF file and am working with a webmaster to make it available. Current plan is to have it available thru the NSRCA website and you don't need to be a NSRCA member to get access to the file. Will post when it is available or another path is taken.
Hang in there, we will get this done.

RE: building a pattern airplane book
Guys, Don Atwood here. Recently there have been several requests for people trying to find or buy the book How to Build a Pattern Plane. As some of you probably know this book was authored by Bruce Thompson and myself several years ago as a collection of 'how-to' and examples about building a pattern plane. It went thru 4 editions but we stopped making it available when demand had tapered off or basically stopped. Bruce had the book printed and bound them himself so it was quite a chore to make it available.
The file is now online and can be downloaded for a $10 fee from the NSRCA website at the following link:
http://nsrca.us/index.php?page=shop....art&Itemid=496
You do not need to be a member of the NSRCA to purchase the download however you do need to register on the site to access the purchase/download functions.
All revenues from this effort go to the NSRCA to support 'pattern' activities of any type.
thanks,
Don

It went thru 4 editions but we stopped making it available when demand had tapered off or basically stopped. Bruce had the book printed and bound them himself so it was quite a chore to make it available. We did not publish and/or update the book for monetary reasons and in the long run probably lost money on it. It was done to try and help people with the basic techniques and methods to build a light, straight pattern plane. Bruce did most of the writing, I contributed the initial ideas and helped edit the versions. After much discussion (nagging on my part), Bruce agreed we could make it available electronically. I had no interest in managing that effort and approached some of the NSRCA officers with the idea to make it available in PDF format thru the NSRCA website for a download fee. The revenues for this will all go to the NSRCA. Hopefully, this will help people trying to learn to build as well as creating traffic for the website and attract new members. RE: building a pattern airplane book
Guys,
It appears the authors have given the rights to the book to the NSRCA. The NSRCA will send you the book over the internet for $10.00. I just got mine and it is well worth the money. It's over 200 pages long. Why don't you help the NSRCA and your self, and buy it from the organization that is trying to support pattern flying.
