I have a Hanno OS 61 that has never been started.
This is the long stroke version of the OS 61 used in the early pattern days. It runs at lower rpm to lower the noise rules that were in effect at that time.
I am interested in the value of this motor.
I am trying to decide whether I should go ahead and run it or sell it as is.

What is the serial number of the engine? It is embossed on the left engine mounting lug.
A NIB Hanno Special seems to be worth $500-600 these days. They are getting harder to find. Post a photo if you have the time.

It's "worth" what ever someone will pay for it. I'd guess $300 - $400 for a NIB without the pipe. A nice box with all packaging/documentation is a must...

The "Hanno" red pipe is still available at tower for $159.

I have to agree with Jeff. In the last couple of years a few did sell on the auction site for as much as $500 or $550 if memory serves.

The most recent *bay auction was for a Hanno Special MKII with pipe all NIB which ended July 5, 2011. The selling price was $715.00. Prior to that, a NIB Hanno MKI NIB (serial #2740) with header sold for $403. In 1998 I paid $425 for a NIB MKI and a NIB MKII Hanno - that's $425 for two engines. Motivated buyers/bidders can drive the price up quickly (A NIB Hanno I was bidding on, though I stopped when the price topped $400, eventually sold for over $900 [X(], back in 2007).

Will, wasn't there one (engine only) that sold for something like $500-600 from a guy in Hong Kong. Engine and box were pristine.

I know I'd defer to you for any stats on Hanno's - including bay transactions...

the Hanno pipe is very long - I believe it might be longer than Hatori 750's. Basically designed for even a 13" prop. Actually, I wish I knew what prop Hanno used on his Mystic 60 in '93 on which he used this engine & pipe combination.

I'm sure you could use it on the SF but a 650 or 700 Hatori might do better. It would probably also cost ~1/3 less. A long stroke 10cc quiet pipe from Macs works well too - provided they sort out their service issues...

I hate to ask but why is the Hanno going for so much? Is it demand? The YS 60/61 was IMHO a better engine and more of them are out there.

Ralph I take that back. The Hanno pipe is 18.75" long while the Macs LS quiet pipe is 18.50" long - so just 1/4" longer not the full inch I was expecting. I'm not sure if there have been revised versions of the Hanno pipe that came out later with the Mark II engines. Those may have been between 1/4 - 3/4" longer max I'd imagine.

Here's a snap of my Mark I OS pipe (made by Hatori) beside a 10cc Macs LS QP.

Precisely again. More of them means lower cost. They also don't have Hanno's signature so they don't have the cache of the RF "Hanno Special". But a Hanno is also nothing to sneeze at - powerful beast.

At this point I'm actually leaning towards a Hatori #700 pipe with a #751 header. Haven't had any luck finding either one here in the states. Singapore Hobbies has them though.

I used to run Hatori mufflers all the time back in my heli days and I really liked them. They were very well made and I never had any problems with them! I'm sure their pipes & headers are just as well made.

OK, Hanno flew a 13x11 Maro prop in 1993. I have some Maro Props (but not in that size); they work well, but I still prefer APC props. A 13x8 prop may not be enough load for the Hanno, I'm running a 13x9 on 2 of mine and they are turning around 10,000 rpm. I've run a 13x10 and a 13.5x9, both like a little longer pipe length and the needle setting is a little more critical. The 13x9, 12.5x10 and 12x11 all run nicely on the same pipe length, not too sensitive on the high speed needle and a K&B 1L plug will last 60-80 flights easily.
Ralph, try searching for Hatori USA; their website shows a nice selection of 60 sized pipes and headers.
As for the YS vs OS argument: the only winners are those fortunate enough to own them! I have run all the versions of the rear exhaust OS and YS engines. The YS 60 was the best short-stroke pattern 60 ever made IMHO, however, the OS 61VF was, in many ways, friendlier. The stock YS .61LS (before the AR) was more powerful than the stock OS LS and caused some tuning issues for some pilots who were comfortable with the YS 60. The OS LS with a Performance Specialties piston/sleeve was a beast (I still wish I had kept mine [] ), but the Hanno was better. As far as the YS 61AR vs the Hanno Special; they are both comparable in power. The YS and the pressurized fuel system always seem to require a bit more maintenance than the Hanno.
The were only about 8000 Hanno Specials made (at most - I've never seen a serial number between 5000 and 5,999; so maybe only 7,000) and I suspect there were fewer YS 61ARs made - they came after the Hanno and YS was already strongly committed to their 4-stroke engines which quickly became the powerplant of choice in the pattern community.

I have a 12 x 11 for my hanno (APC) so it's good news that it'll work well with that prop.

All I need to do is build an airframe around it.
