Phoenix 1 build
I have plans and ordered a short kit for don Lowes 1965 Phoenix and am looking for any building tips / info. Specifically there is no dihedral specs listed on the plan. Any info to help me on this build would be appreciated.

Here's a link to a Phoenix thread here in RCU that has some history of the Phoenix series plus some good pics of the P-1. The guys here will have some really good info or build tips to assist your P-1 build.
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/clas...hoenix-vi.html
FYI for the classic folks, Munster recently participated in our club's first interclub SPA style pattern contest. The feedback was so good we will do it again next year. Munster has been practicing and has made great improvements to his all around flying. He will greatly appreciate any assistance/contributions to his thread. Looking forward to seeing his P-1 take to the air!

Munster, I was at one time going to build a P1 back in '08 and also noticed no mention of dihedral. I got in contact with Don Lowe through his son Jon and received this message:
"for the life of me I can't recall the dihedral--it had some probably about 1in. under each tip. As you know with sweep as you pull angle of attack dihedraleffect takes place. The more alpha the larger the effect. Thats why over theyears I reduced the sweep. Any wing with some sweep at the quarter chord willexhibit some coupling."
I did scratch build a wooden P5 and used the 1" under each tip number as per its plan and it exhibited very little roll coupling, but it's a drastically different sweep and fin angle layout from the P1. I'm glad you're taking an interest in SPA and Vintage Pattern in general and I invite you to come down for a contest sometime with Mark. Which reminds me, Mark, get your butt down again too!

Hey Eric,
My plans after Chattanooga certainly got dumped on! At least two events are on my book for 2014, and I'm pretty certain I'll have at least one B- Novice flyer coming along too. I'm working on possibly another one also. I'll be flying a Bridi kit built DB with an OS 65 AX, or the GPMA version with a 4S in it. Might use both and one will be the excuse why the other flys so poorly :0)

Tried to post a pic of the DB but ain't working......

Anybody have the P-1 plans scanned? I found the P -5 plans over on Hip Pocket but I like the lines of the -1. I just don't feel like joining the many bash RCM plans threads. Thanks.

Phoenix build
I have the plans in a .tiff file - full size. Just go to Fed Ex or Kinkos and print. I have received the short kit from Eureka. I will start the build pics shortly. I am finishing a B-17 and PBY first (setting control throws, cg etc). Hopefully the plans will roll out this weekend (with pics). It looks like a straight forward build. I Thanks for the dihedral info.

It's great to see a Phoenix 1 build thread. It was the very first plane I ever built, (I was ambitious and thought it was soooo cool). It was pretty rough, but that's how I spent my summer in 1965. The wing was built FLAT if I remember correctly--it didn't have any dihedral as such...I remember building it on one of the library tables at my Jr High school, (the librarian flew R/C).
I couldn't fly at the time, but who cares about details like that. I built the plane and painted it like an F-86 Sabre I saw in a book. I never flew it. Over the years of storage the 1/16" balsa sheeting got brittle and cracked. When I eventually moved out of state I gave it away to someone who I'm told flew it. The next sentence was that "It flew faster than hell, and made a spectacular crash..."
The pictures on the right are of Don Lowe's original Phoenix 1 taken at the 1965 Detroit Invitational. I showed him a picture of mine, and he just smiled as if to say, "...kid you're over your head"

Pics show plans, and short kit (with Kaos cannopy). The remaining balsa is on order. Probably going to put a HP 61 GOLD CUP for power I've also added the B-17 after the maiden flight (check your shorts Jason) and the PBY. I also added a pic of my Fairchild being built from scratch from 1956 plans. Is that Marks Kaos taking refuge in there?

The lazer cutting looks second to none munster. So, the P-1 takes a Kaos canopy?
Ha! I do see a Kaos refugee precariously trying to hide on your ladder. That's quite the hanger you have there.
Hey Hook - If you built planes as much as you talk, you would have a new plane to fly every week!

H9 P-7, GPM DB, kit built DB, two Kaos ARFs (one bit some dust) the Kaos in munsters pic(it's his now), Cherokee 140 ARF, Tiger Tail (it's also history) and Tiger Tail III in primer, EFlite Splendor, EFlite Diamante, EFlite BAE Hawk (ready for maiden) Dream 110, both an MK Matlas 40 (40 size Atlas) and a CG Skylane 62 ready for cover. So the ARFS are assembled not built, but the rest are built up. Oh, and a full scale Vans RV-6, kit built, started 10/1993, certificated 11/2003. Your turn!!!!

PS: It just dawned on me that you likely know all of the above "missile"! Been a long freaking day .

Looking to see your progress Jim. Don't forget to send me a pic of your SK!
Who did you buy your wood from? Did you get landing gear with your short kit? Jim out

Elevator / Rudder
I have the rudder and elevator glued up. I will be installing Robart hinge points on all control surfaces (http://airfieldmodels.com/informatio...ints/index.htm) I had to add some balsa to the elevator to accept the hinge points. Final sanding will occur after the control surfaces have been hinged, although the hinge points will be removed and reinstalled on final assembly, after finishing.
Generally, I build the model to completion, radio gear, push-rods - everything possible PRIOR to covering and finishing. I will next start on the wing set up
Missile - I ordered wood from National Balsa. They sell landing gear block and I will probably be using Sullivan hardware for the gear. Mains need to be bent from 5/32 stock. I use a tubing bender for that purpose.

I added the link to airfield models (airfieldmodels.com.) . The site is extensive and has a ton of links. Great site to help in your modeling needs.
I should note that my building board is 3/4" balsa squared, leveled and permanently mounted to a leveled and squared (independently from the building board) to a workbench mounted to the garage studs. I have used this arrangement for years with good results.

Off to a very good start Munster! Time permitting, any chance a pic of the building board with level and square could get posted? I dusted of a .40 sized Atlas (MK Matlas) that I decided needs to be completed before anything else gets started (my F/O says yeah, right! )
