More Basement Goodies

I thought some might like to see a couple of planes that I’ve mentioned in other threads, as well as show one of the neatest solutions to a painful problem that I’ve found.
First is my ancient, battle worn Bridi Escape. My friend Jerry Voth built this many years ago and flew in Masters and F3A. Jerry flies out of a cow pasture, so the plane has taken more than it’s share of hard departures and arrivals. It stands on a set of Carl Goldberg retracts that are tough as nails and have never failed. It’s glassed and painted with Dupont catalyzed auto paint – Jerry’s a paint and body man. Power is a YS 61AR with a Macs fusetop header and a Hatori 650 pipe - MORE than adequate power to haul this almost 11-pound beast around!! I'm planning to build a new LIGHTER fuse for it some day incorporating Bill Cunningham's mods.
Several folks have mentioned in various threads about their callers complaining about getting sprayed by top exhaust models. The 3rd picture show how you fix that problem. It’s a piece of silicone tubing that’s large enough to fit over the outlet of the pipe. Not only does it keep your caller happy, it also make post flight cleanup much simpler.
Next is my Great Planes Advanced Trainer 60. I built this plane to teach my then 10 year old daughter to fly in 1992. I reduced the dihedral by 50% and it flies great upright or inverted. It’s currently powered by an OS 61SF but that will probably change soon as I have other uses for the SF. It’s covered with Ultracote in some VERY VIVID colors. My daughter designed the color scheme with only a little intervention from me. I insisted on the solid color bottom wing and stab panel for visibility. She said OK only if the colors switched sides between the wing and stab. You can see that if you look closely in the 5th picture. It uses the exhaust extension to keep the plane cleaner which is attached to the landing gear plate with a wire tie. The plane’s been rebuilt once following a pancake landing at the field when she got disoriented and I didn’t have time to save it completely, but it still flies fine.
The next picture is a product that I’ve come to love. We’ve all come up against the problem of attaching something like a canopy, bellypan or cowling with screws. You have to find something for the screw to bite into that won’t disintegrate when you tighten down the screws. Enter Ohio Superstar All threads. CyA one of these in a piece of balsa, plywood, etc and you’re ready to install your screws. I’m not sure what they are made from, but the hold self-tapping screws very tightly. I’ve never had one vibrate loose, even on 120-size pattern ships.
Finally is my wing rack. These are the wings for 10 planes. From the top they are:
1. 1/2A Texaco Strato Streak - transparent yellow
2. Aquila sailplane - red
3. House of Balso 2x2 sailplane -transparent green and white
4. Aspire electric sailplane - upside down
5. Pulsar bipe – 2 white wings with blue tips
6. UFO – uncovered
7. Viper 500 V-tail quickie
8. Trainer 60
9. Bird of Time sailplane- uncovered
10. Escape
For the enquiring minds - notice the 2 long yellow boxes in the top left corner? Those are the 2 NIB Hatori 650 Pipes.
