The horizontal stab construction is going very well. It built very straight and the D tube construction very ridged and solid. The original Goldberg structure could flex and twist a lot when covered with film. Without a silk and dope finish that type of construction loses a lot of strength.

Working on the 1/16” sheet built-up elevators. The trailing edge will be a 1/8” X 3/16” basswood strip shaped to an edge.
The sheeting does not overlap on the trailing edge. The edge stops at the rib ends forming a 1/8” edge. The trailing edge is squared and the 1/8” basswood is glued to the edge. I plan on doing the trailing edge sheeting on the wing the same way.

I know there are a lot Ultracote fans but from my experience it has kind of a dull finish compared Monokote.

In fact, the old MK was even more glossy than the current stuff.
Transparent UC might not be an issue though.

Yup, that's my gripe with UC as well. The surface is not relective like MK.

Great progress Mike.
I hope to get your take on transparent UC if you decide to go with it. I understand the stuff is pretty light but I don't know if it's any lighter or better than transparent MK.
MK has become harder to work with (especially on fully sheeted large surfaces like wings) but it still has that luster and it sticks well. I painted over top current white MK recently and it's all holding together pretty well.
I know a lot of people are unhappy with MK but I haven't had too many issues yet. Granted, it is a little harder to apply than it used to, at least for me.

Thanks David. Going to be cool to fly it and have the sun shining through the translucent red on the open framework. Got to research the best solution for translucent red film. Might try something else besides MonoKote.

Let me suggest a lightweight combination for the partially open structure. Consider covering with light polyspan and dope. It tightens with an iron or heat gun and is very sheer. Then come over the top with red tissue like ply span esaki. Combo sounds heavy but is actually lighter than MK/UK.
But is a fair bit more work

Working on the wing sheeting. The leading edge D tube sheeting is 3” wide with a ¼” thick leading edge. Even though I beveled the leading edge of the sheeting where it joins the leading edge for a tight fit, I have a couple of spots where the glue is showing on the seam. But other than that, I’m really pleased how straight and true the wing is going together.

Test fitting the gear mounts. The wing sheeting will go over the gear block area.
A bit off topic but pretty cool. I expect you have all seen James May on Top Gear but I didn’t know he was a plastic model builder. Pretty neat piece about building a full size Airfix plastic Spitfire with help from young kids http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zID8rnZcshs I think the neatest part is how he involves the kids in the project.

The 3” wide lower trailing edge is glued in place and I’m doing some pre-work for the ailerons before I sheet the top. I’ve glued in the parts that will be end caps for the ailerons when I cut them out later and added some balsa for the aileron linkage. I’m re-purposing the 22+ year old aileron torque tube linkage and fixed gear wires that I did not use in my Tiporare kit.
I’ve modified the Tiporare gear wire to make the track a little wider and still use the standard Skylark gear mount position. The idea for the outward angle I got from a friend and I’ve used the idea with good success on other fixed gear aircraft. It gives the gear a bit of extra soft flexing on landings.
