Matt,

The guy with the "dunce cap" is described as Chatlie Thompson, CD. This must have been the worlds down in South Africa in 1979 - the year Hanno broke his hand and wasn't there (per the article). Matt and the Arrow therefore won. 1981 worlds were in Mexico with Hanno and the Magic while 1983 were in the US (Florida?) with Hanno and the Calypso.

Who was Matsuo Kato? Related to Masahiro Kato of MK fame?

Actually I'm certain it was 79 (aside from the Arrow win) also for the reason that QQ is described as being 12 years old. That would place him with a birth in 67 which is correct because I know we're exactly the same age.

Forensic research!

The reality of his competition history indeed turned out to be mind boggling. Great find.

If Wolfgang Matt decided to write his competition memoirs, I think it would be a rather thick book and sell thousands of copies. I'd bet it would make fascinating reading!!

Doxilia, he's been competing at Worlds level since when, '71? Or was that Prettner? I don't think I ever read anything written by Matt, particularly his thoughts on design....Anybody have anything written by Matt that they can post herein?

the build article for the Atlas for MAN was written by Ron Chidgey, but I recall there was a short question and answer with Wolfgang. He gave his thoughts on design, but again, that was 1976. He is still designing cutting edge stuff today.

Make that 1967 when he was 19 years old. Came 6th with a Fritz Bosch designed Super Delphin.

Several years ago I got this list, it starts 1960 and lasts up to 1999.
Matt and Prettner both appeared under the top 5 for first time 1971.

Here's what I think is from '01-'11. The YS's are not all correct since some were kept secret as to what was actually being used, but it should be pretty close.

Hi,
Wolfgang Matt's Super Star construction article was written by himself. It is "signed" Wolfgang Matt last in the article. The article was in the german magazine "Flyg modell-technik" issue 5 (May) 1970. The article is for the Super Star version that he flew at the World Championship 1969 where he placed 6th. The article is in german so I suppose it isnot not much point to post it here since most probably prefer english here at rcuniverse. But if anyone want the article PMme.
There is a little note in the article andpicture of the Super Star kit that the company "Firma modellbau Matt & Meier" produced. Kitwas available as all balsa (wing+stab+fuselage) or with glass fuselage (and balsa wing+stab). There is a norwegian guy that flew such kitbuilt Super Star thathe had bought from this company and heflew that plane at a Swedish classic pattern gathering in 2010.The builder and owner is Knut Aker from Norway, Vingtor RC-club Oslo. According to an interview with him in Swedish Model Flying Federation magazine issue 52010 he said he bought it from Matt himself and built it 1971. He has used about 100 litre fuel flying this model and had not flown it for 27 years when he flew it again in 2010. See picture below from 2010 where he start the engine onhis Super Star.

Bo,

I notice a WC processing sticker on the fuselage so I guess this must be the model he flew at the 1973 WCs in Gorizia, Italy to place 36th.

Hi Ray,
Yes it is mentioned in the interview that he, Knut Aker, flew his last Year in competition in 1973 in WC in Italy 1973. So the Super Star in the picture in my previous post is probably the model he flew at that WC. Then the model went in to Sleeping Beauty for 27 years and was flown again 2010.
It is mentioned also that Knut Aker hasthree 1stplace at norwegiannational championship, some 2nd and 3rd places also from back in the days.
I found the 1973 WC result-list in Flug modell-technik magazine issue 11 (Nov) 1973 - I made a scan and saved as PDF and it is attached below. Of 78 competitors it was 13 that flew Super Star (in various versions) and that is 17%.

Do You have any photo of his model from 1973 WC?

/Bo
