I have a gorgeous fully painted P-8 with a flying stab. Brand new YS 60 and and Kraft retracts but I'm to afraid to fly it.

I have the plane just dont know what kind it is. fuslage is broken almost in halve but wings n stabs are perfect also have os61v and header and spring air retracts will post pic of plane as soon as i figure out how.maybe someone has plane and could use the parts

Flying stabs should be statically balanced to keep pitch divergence at bay. Also if the fulcrum is chosen poorly, there may be too much aerodynamic imbalance to overcome even with today's excellent high tork digital servos.

The AC of wing/stab is by definition 25%MAC. Place the fulcrum on or very near the AC projection to the fuse, statically balance the thing and it should work fine

I have the Utopia, designed by george Albright. Pics were posted around 5 2012, you can look for "history of the utopia" the thread will show up. Gearge started designing it around 1973 full flying stab. I think george made around 50 kits, very pricey from 1973 to 1979. Pete

Hi Everyone again.
I have resumed building my Conquest VI, and have thought about incorporating a stabilator, rather than elevators, and cannot think of too many reasons to not do it. I could accomplish the modification, and I think it would look neat, but, do you guys think it would change the performance in any negative ways? I think it would be sturdy enough, and aerodynamically "cleaner", but I don't want the change to screw-up the performance. I welcome your input for this idea.

This is a S&W Brushfire Plus I picked up at a swap meet. It has the Giezendanner unit. Hoping to have out flying in April once I go through it.

Choose the pivot point as I described above and statically balance it. It may not need 100% static balance. On ailerons that I statically balanced in the pastI balanced about 70% of the aileron weight and the servo did the rest. That saves real weight in the tail.

If you need to find the AC of the stab, look up Geistware on-line, for a reasonable calculator that will give you all the answers you need

There was a pattern biplane in RCM, early 80s with flying stab. Also in MA during same time was a .40 pattern plane with one. I cant remember the names right now.

Thanks. I'm doing the flying stab.
I am going into seizures, trying to build the thing right (in my head), before I put it onto the airplane.
I've made a few test configuration sections, and have decided to make the stab non-removable. That may change, by the time I actually implement it on the plane, though. It's a little more difficult than conventional stab and elevators, but I want it to be right the first time. Are you laughing? Really, it has to function properly, right off the board.
I'll keep you up-to-date about my progress, if you're interested. Thanks again.

Hi All. I Manufactured the Brushfire Plus kit back in the 80s sold hundreds of them. Now that I started flying Classic Pattern again the idea to start making The kit again came about, as soon as I finish a new F3A design by Dean Pappas I will make a few Brushfires maybe buy December. I will keep
you posted.
