2013 Classic Pattern get-Together, May 25th Riverside, Ca.
Hey all you west coast classic pattern junkies! It is time again for the Classic Pattern Get-Together!
Due to the demise of the Channel Islands Condors field, this years event we will be at the Riverside Radio Control Club field, near Perris, California. The date is Saturday, May 25th. I will be posting more details and a flier as soon as the details are ironed out.
The Classic Pattern Get-Together is an informal, low pressure, "fun-fly" type of event for classic pattern enthusiasts to bring their aircraft and just have some fun. It is a one day event.
At last years event, we held an informal "non-contest" where pilots could get the feel for actually flying the pattern in front of judges. Last year we had several pilots fly in this setting for the first time, as well as a few that had not done so for many years. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and we will do it again if there is enough interest.
So dust off those classics and get ready for some real fun action!!! Stay tuned....

Here is the Event Flier-
(See attached file)
Big thank you to the Riverside R/C Club for letting us have the use of their facility for the day, and to Tony Frackowiak for his behind the scenes effort to secure this venue for us. The hours are 8:30 to 4:00, but the field is open sunrise to sunset. Please bring your AMA card. This year there is a ten dollar entry fee. Please bring your own lunch. (We will have some water and soda for everyone in the ice chest.)
If you have attended prior years' events, We hope to see you again. If you have not, please do not be shy. Come on out and have some fun! Put some faces to the funny names that you see here on these forums. Bring a camera!
My lovely wife Jennifer has once again volunteered (really) to be hostess.
If you don't have a bonafide "classic", feel free to bring what you have. This is a great opportunity to check out what classic pattern is all about. If you would like instruction on trimming, flying the pattern or any maneuver, help will be available.
Expect to see all levels from beginner to World Champion competitors and everything in between. All are welcome, and encouraged to come out and participate in a zero pressure environment. If past get together are any indication, you are in for a slamming good time!
Hope to see you there,

I was at the AMA pattern contest at the Riverside field last weekend, they have a great facility, and I thank them wholeheartedly for letting us use it for the CPGT. The runway faces north/south, so the sun is a pain early in the morning, but we are allowed to fly perpendicular to the runway during that time.
So polish those classics up and get 'em ready- it's gonna be a blast!
Photo- Chip Hyde brought out his Patricia and burned up the sky with it after the contest. What a treat!

Ron, I'm sorry that you can't make it. It would have been an honor. Please have safe travels overseas.
I hope to see the rest of the "regular" crowd there. And for any new guys (or Gals- we don't discriminate), hop on board the classic pattern bus, next stop- Riverside!

Thought I would see who plans on attending this Saturday. I'll be there bright and early in the morning with the trusty P-7, hopefully with a new engine package. Should be a blast!

Well I am planning on it! Got the Saphir done, now the trimming process begins!! This thing has some pretty nice power!! Just need to get the precision part dialed in and this will be my classic for this year. Still trying to get over burying my Mini Contender yesterday. That was gonna be Steven's. But the good news is now I don't need a motor for his Mini Trouble Maker that will be getting built very soon!!

Hey All,
Just a reminder, the CPGT is coming up real fast. If you are planning to attend, please sound off- I would like to have a ball park estimate if possible.
Remember to bring your AMA card and a $10 spot for entry. We will have a cooler with water and some drinks, but you are on your own for food. We will have a "Pilot's Choice" award for best classic (contestant judging), a grab bag for the furthest drive, as well as a pseudo contest if there is enough interest. We did this last year, and everyone had a BLAST! It is a great opportunity to get the feel for what it is like to actually fly a pattern and receive scores both for the first timer and those who may have not done it since "back in the day". All just for FUN!!!!
See Y'all there!

One more thing,
If you don't have a "real" classic pattern airplane, don't let that hold you back. Out west, we are more about the flying and less hung up on the airplane. So bring what you have, and explore the world of one-maneuver-per-pass style of pattern flying (The way it was meant ot be!!!).
Help will be available for trimming, set up issues, etc. Come on out and make it a learning experience as well as a boat load of FUN!!
We are bringing a generator so electric power will be available for our electric friends!!!

Now that the 500 mile race is over there will probably be a post with all of the results. It was a really fun day and many old and new people came to join in it with us.

I couldn't have had a better day! I always seem to be smiling after a good Classic flight and what could make that better then all the great people that were at this event. Many thanks to Robert and Jennifer for a special day. I was munching on stuff in the giveaway goodie bag the whole drive home! Thanks to the Riverside RC Club for the use of their great field.
This is a great venue for getting and building the interest in Classic Pattern. It's low key and a lot of fun! Thanks!

IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!
The 2013 Classic Pattern Get-Together (aka the CPGT) is in the books. Major thanks to the Riverside Radio Control Club for allowing us to utilize their fantastic facility for this event. I would also like to acknowledge Tony Frackowiak for helping to secure this location, and also my lovely wife Jennifer who graciously served once again as our hostess and line chief. I would also like to thank Kevin Gribben of West Wings for his generous donation of some of his products to our prize packages. Visit his site www westwings.com for more info.
We had many returning pilots as well as some new pilots. While the CPGT is a no-pressure fly-in type of event, we once again held an "non-contest", the main purpose of which is to introduce new fliers to experience what it is like to fly a pattern in an actual contest setting, call the maneuvers, etc. Much like last year, the response was positively great! Here are the results:
Novice:
1. Don Fox 365.5
2. Jamie Schoolcraft 261.5
3. Eric Huffman 298.0
4. Scott Holmes 181.5
5. Chris Mahoney 143.5
Advanced:
1. Doug Woodward 327.0
2. Paul Rinde 287.5 (Flying a Falcon 56!)
Masters:
1. Tony Frackowiak 1694.5
2. Robert Fish 1534.0
We present a "Pilot's Choice" award for the best Classic airplane. This year we had a tie between Eric Huffman's "A Mystery" airplane (no one- and I mean no one knows what it is) and Doug Woodward's Conquest 4 E (electric). Since a fight to the death would have been too messy, we opted for a coin toss to decide the winner. Doug called heads, and heads it was! Congratulations Doug! You must see this aircraft in person to fully appreciate the craftsmanship and engineering that went into this aircraft. Truly stunning. (Side note: I have had the privilege of flying both of these airplanes, and their flight performance is on par with their workmanship).
We also have a "Longest Distance" award for the pilot that, well, traveled the furthest. Once again, that honor went to Eric Huffman, who for the third year in a row drove out from Phoenix, AZ to burn some glow fuel with us. Thank you Eric!!!
I will try to post pics, no promises- you know......(Romeo Charlie Uniform). You can always view pics on (Romeo Charlie Golf). A huge thanks to all who came out and made the 2013 CPGT such a worthwhile effort. We are looking forward to next years event. See you there!
