Thanks Rusty! I've got a short kit and the retracts are a great idea!

Any thoughts on where I can get a canopy? Anything close in size and shape will be just fine.

Fuel tank at CG?

This is my opinion but I have found that it is just not that critical. You want the airplane to not be too neutral as it tends to hunt or not feel locked in or groovy. You want to have a predictable input. Typical nose mounted set-up, the model will require less up elevator as the CG subtly shifts to the rear during the flight.

In the new Great Planes Dirty Birdy, I added a 10 ounce header tank directly behind the 8 ounce or so stock tank. I could fly the stick tank, both tanks and found the elevator changed sensitivity but not too bad.

If your motor will allow for a CG mounted tank, absolutely put it there! My Blue Angel and Tiporare have CG tanks and YS pumped engines.

Tweety Bird canopy?

If you look at the pictures of my unpainted nose you will see a balsa canopy. My kit did not have the canopy and preferred the simplicity of the wooden version.

i copied the planes, added a 1/64 keel and laminated balsa. I lightened or hollowed the inside before attaching.

Sig still sells canopies in 5-6 sizes. Look on web site. 8)

Mounting a tank at or near the CG?

The pictures below are of my Tiporare. A front bulkhead captures the tank stopper and a tray holds the body of tank. A Velcro strap with a little silicone or male/female Velcro on tank tray hold it in place. Weight fanatics will use 1/8 aluminum tubing to get fuel lines from motor compartment to tank area.

Simple, works in many types of models.

Rusty flying the Blue Angel...You Tube link...

This was spontaneously filmed by a Fox Valley Aero Club member in 2012. I missed almost ever point but it gives one a flavor of a very fine flying model. It is one of my all time favorites and after a couple dozen more flights scored very well.

I have been trying to build a G-62 size Kaos. I have the landing gear for it but have never been able to get the wing correct. Years ago I tried the Compufoil program but could never get it to work properly. I think my biggest problem with Compufoil was that I'm a experienced Auto-Cad user. I'm looking for a .DWG drawing that includes all the wing ribs with the correct dihedral angle. I have a very small Drawing that is for a Electric powered Kaos, but when you scale it up to like a 90 inch wingspan the spacing between ribs becomes 6 or 7 inches. I have tried using a Foam Wing but run into problems with reinforcing the main landing gear bays. I really want it to be a tricycle gear plane, not a tail dragger.
If I could get a drawing of a single wing panel 48" long with 16 ribs on 3" spacing I will finish the rest of the airplane and share the drawing with anybody that is interested. I'm retired and have all the time in the world.
Thanks,
Larry

Ok thanks for the input berusty,
For the mean time I am flying as much as I can before the winter sets in,i am practicing Cuban eights and proper roll techniques, my model the tiger 60 is heavy and fly's like a station wagon, but its solid, a good in between airplane.
I will have many more questions as I build but for now its flying season,
Stoner.

Creating a G-62 size Kaos?

One technique the Elves and I use is to simply take a set of full-size plans and take them to FedEx Kinko's and enlarge to the size you prefer. One Elf is an architect with his own firm and simply uses his scanner/printer to enlarge the plans to my desired size. RCM published the original Kaos plans and construction article and they still sell plans with mixed service results.

Wooden Canopies?

Creating a wooden canopy is simple and uses scrap box materials. The Tweety Bird canopy has a 1/64 plywood keel with lite balsa sandwitched. It is sanded to shape then hollowed out using the tools in photo.

I like a painted fuselage with 3/4-7/8 ounce glass cloth attached with Z-Poxy finishing resin thinned with denatured alcohol. Prather phenolic micro balloons (any micro balloons works) is rubbed all over before the epoxy cures. This fills in the weave and sands quickly and smooth. Adding the micro balloons saves a few coats of primer.

Paint is then applied per your favorite, PPG is what Dave G. and I prefer.

Clear Canopies?

The TOC rules required a pilot...my boys liked Winnie the Pooh so one had to be in my Akromaster.

Process:

1. Fuselage is glassed using 3/4" glass cloth and Z-Poxy finishing resin.
2. Canopy outline is drawn on fuselage.
3. Mask fuselage and apply gray dark gray texture paint available from Lowe's or Home Depot.
5. A cockpit floor is added made of 3/32" balsa, painted black, pilot mounted and glued thru the air exit hole in bottome of fuselage.
6. A 1/4" foam rubber (packing foam) front and rear bulkhead is added to seal compartment from dust and debris.
7. Canopy is taped in place after painstakingly cut to fit.
8. Aeropoxy either from Violett or McMaster/Carr is put around outside of canopy forming filet.
9. Apply Prather micro balloons and Z-Poxy finishing resin filet.
10. Sand and prime fuselage.
11. Blue tinted paint is added to simulate blue tint.

When you blow up the plans, it affects the wing rib spacing too. That is the problem with doing that. I was hoping that there might be a scratch builder among this group that can generate wing ribs.
Thanks,
Larry

http://www.profili2.com/eng/default.asp is a free wing design software. You can input the root and tip ribs, specify the rib spacing and it will generate the ribs templates.

Thats the 1988 Skybolt that Hanno did use to compete (and win) in his last TOC. The 1984 model looked significantly less like a Skybolt..

I was not even close regarding the 1984 Skybolt...wow what a horrible looking Dalobolt!

The 1988 version is pretty cool.

Mike, if I am the CD and assist with PR...do you want to host a Classic Pattern and Classic TOC event in 2015?

Rusty,

Yes I think we could do that. When are you thinking? Lets come up with a few possible dates and then I'll tt the club about it.

Mike,

I have no preference. It seems that the calendar fills fast and given enough notice I will get people there!

Popargr...I have a thick skin and would not take offense! The crappy looking model he actually used is hideous for sure. I like the 88' version.

Let's have a series of Classic TOC events in 2015!!!

In 2011, Classic TOC class was born at my FVAC Chicagoland Classic Pattern Championships. The attached PDF was published in my Classic Pattern Trader to discuss the concept and an over view of the rules.

It would be fun to offer an event in the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest (in process) and West in 2015. The new Aeroworks 30CC Laser 200 is a PERFECT way to participate as it duplicates (size) the Wayne Ulery Laser (Model Airplane News 1979) from the 1978 TOC.

The 1978 Hanoo Prettner Dalotel

I have not "Googled" Hanno Prettner for a couple of years so I did today. No way but a thread by Schweighofer (Hanno's model distributor pal) has a thread with dimensions of the 1978, 1980 and 1982 Dalotels. Turns out that the 1978 model had a 2.85 meter span, 2.30 meter length and weighed 9.95 kilograms.

The best news is an ARF, the same size, by Ecotop is available!!!! The link is below.

Interesting!

Hi Rusty!!

This is a great thread and a great idea. I don't post too often, I just like to look and read what others are saying, but I would like to post and welcome you back. You have an unbridled enthusiasm for Classic Pattern and a lot of information.

Thanks for sharing.
