Gene,

Your comments are very kind and I do appreciate them! Some of my best life experiences, lessons and friendships are from model airplanes. My youngest son is crazy about them. As an example the last few nights we have been bashing a $9 foam glider. We shortened the nose, sanded, made cavities for the gear, he painted it...we flew it tonight. Priceless moments.

Classics at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh 2011-2012

The Dose Family had the honor of having our MK Champion and Sig Kommander on display at the EAA Museum in Oshkosh, WI from 2011-2012. The EAA and AMA began a partnership promoting full-scale and model airplanes in 2010 (roughly) and it was kicked off with the entrance of the EAA museum featuring a special display of models.

Classic Interview: Ben Strasser and Classic Flying: Dave Guerin

The Classic Pattern Trader, a non-commercial newsletter, was created in 2009 dedicated to providing information on the people, the pilots, designs, kits, engines, accessories of the golden age of R/C precision aerobatics (pattern flying) 1965-1985.

The premier issue was June 2009 and featured an interview with Ben Strasser, author of RCM Flight Training Manual Volume II. Dave Guerin, world class builder, US F3A Team Manager, multi-time US NATS Contest Director and precision aerobatic flying coach discusses flying and trimming.

Classic Archives: Bud Weber Sequel

Classic pattern competitor Bud Weber designed the Sequel in the early 70's to compete against the best. The article contained in my December 2009 Classic PatternTrader, a non-commercial newsletter, discusses the model and build and laser kit available.

Classic Modelers and Pilots: Don Lowe and Mark Radcliff

In 1972/3 I was 9 or 10 years old in Omaha, Nebraska. My mom would drag me to the Swanson Library at 90th and Dodge for Saturday morning youth story time and would wander around after to meet up with her. One morning I discovered a collection of hardbound magazines called American Aircraft Modeler. OMG...I checked out 7 (the maximum) and wore them out paging through them. We went back and I got 7 more...

I became fascinated with a column written by Don Lowe about models referred to as "pattern planes". Don designed the Phoenix series of models and was a fantastic story teller for the NATS and World Champs. I try to emulate his personal and detailed writing style (he is much better!).

Fast forward and I became a huge fan of Mark Radcliff, his USA FAI team participation and his signature color scheme. My grandma bought me a Dirty Birdy 40, K&B 40 for my 9th grade christmas present. I had already defined my skills at building and Monokoting as a 13 year old and would frame a Spickler Quickee 500, Sig Kougar, Kommander or Goldberg Falcon for $30 and cover for an additional $25. I was pretty busy! The club hot shot painter offered a trade- you build/cover a Quickee 500 and I will paint your Dirty Birdy with 3 colors and it will be gorgeous. Yep, I chose a variation of mark's color scheme.

I met Mr. Lowe and Mr. Radcliff at the Qui Que Somenzini booth at Toledo 2007 when I was the USA F3A fund raising chairman and the photo is below. Mark came to "Rusty's Classic Pattern Tailgate" in 2010 with the actual Phoenix 7 he flew in the World Champs and we have been pals ever since.

I cant say it enough...modeling has been so good to me!!!

Classic Perspective: 1978 Akromaster vs 2007 Wolfgang Matt Beryll F3A

Ed Keck designed the TOC Akromaster in 1978 and was powered by a Webra 91, standard muffler and turned a 15 x 8 prop. My 2007 Oxai Beryll designed by Wolfgang Matt is powered by a Hacker Competition C50 14XL turning a 21 x 13.5 prop using a lipo 10s 5300 mah battery. The Beryll is my favorite all-time airplane logging in 400-500 flights until retired in 2010. My dear Pal Mel Z. Is the new owner and lets me fly it every year.

Today I flew the Beryll and Akro a couple of flights each...you know what? The Akromaster is a very fine precision aerobatic airplane. I need to fine tune a few things but after about 45 life-time flights it is very capable. I tried the inexpensive Zippy 6S 5000 mah 25C batteries and at $85.00 am impressed. I flew 8 minute aggressive flights and only replaced about 3800 mah after each flight. Mine is powered by the modest prized Rimfire 1.20 motor, 90 amp Rimfire speed control turning an APC 16 x 12 E prop.

Hi all, engine questions,
Should I size an engine to balance out the plane?
Or do I just go by what's recommended plus some?
Motors are glow nitro 2 cycle and 4.
Stoner.

Stoner,

your questions are a little confusing and might lead to plenty of to and fro. I'd suggest you start a new thread letting us know what model and engine you want to put together and we can give you some input.

It will also help to leave this "historical" pattern thread to follow its intended purpose.

Rusty,

good stuff! Welcome back to the fold.

Just a minor comment, you might find the ambiance and posting of pictures/maintaining of threads easier on the "other" forum. The classic pattern folks have now been wrestling with RCU for a number of years and many have migrated..., if you will.

Why base my comments at RCU?

Short answer: I think my various threads cumulatively have 400,000 or more hits since 2005. I have been censored and actually blocked for maybe 3 years. I am posting again for many reasons but mostly to preserve the concepts and aspects of modeling that define the RCU demographic. Probably 15-50 people actually follow or are keenly interested in reading my experiences or observations. It is fun for me!

Long answer: Please see "short answer".

Rusty,
I also am staying on this thread and so should you.being told to move to another forum is bogus. especially if my project is indeed a vintage reproduction pattern kaos 90 and yours are endless, its all good.

Classic Icon: Hanno Prettner with Gernot Bruckman!

Hanno Prettner quietly arrived on the global pattern scene at the 1973 FAI World Championships. His Super Sicroly (edited spelling thanks!)design was different by size, shape and planform. His legendary Curare' was the next model in 1975 Worlds. Hanno authorized the new currently available Curare' with his pal Schweighofer, the Austrian (edited thanks!) hobby powerhouse.

Early this morning, one of my Facebook pals, Andrew Jesky, shared the picture below of Hanno and Gernot Bruckman from a recent visit with Mr. Prettner. The Jesky's may be the nicest modeling family in the USA, always opening their home for local contests and modeling activities close to Toledo. Gernot and Andrew became fast friends at the ETOC events.

The Super Sicroly (edited spelling thanks!) photo is from the 1st annual Circus Circus Tournament of Champions...yes there is an airplane next to the pretty girl (edited smoking hot!!! thanks)!

I met Gernot in 2007 and while a judege for the ETOC, purchased his 2nd place Spark, an incredible model. In 2010, I was once again a judge for the ETOC and purchased his winning YAK model. He is a super polite young man with world class hands.

Just to be clear, I wasn't suggesting that Rusty stop posting here or move the thread elsewhere. I was merely informing him of a situation he may not have been aware of due to his posting absence on RCU. As always where and what he chooses to post is entirely up to him.

I was simply trying to help both Rusty with some info and Stoner with some suggestions.

David

Rusty,

due to the scope and historical nature of your thread I just want to point out that Hanno's model is called a "Super Sicroly" not "Sciroly" as written in your last post.

Also, to avoid confusion, Prettner as well as Schweighofer and Bruckmann are Austrian not German.

Classic event in 2015?

I will have a couple of events including a simple organized get together and an event with scoring and trophies. I will also drag a few airplanes to different events so people can see how well they fly.

Classic Rare Kits: The Capricorn circa 1973-75?

This is a very cool Mike Birch (UK) model that I know very little about. Note the nifty tailwheel mounted at the trailing edge of the wing. I have many rare kits that I will show photos. One of the photos has lots of writing and I am sure provides more detail.

Wow, that's an oldie! Ironically, Mick Reeves was a very successful scale competitor. I wonder if he started out in pattern, too?
