thanks ! joys of working in a body shop. ths is just a prep stall. decent area to work in without firing up the real booths. this weekend ill go aback and paint all the control surfaces. engine installed and retracts done. just need to glue hinges and install batt and receiver. should be done within a week. does anyone know about the novarossi factory headers? do they need cut or are they already to go?

The NR headers are factory cut to give "flexible tune" on the engines. I tested my Speed/13 with the factory 1" header rise. Performance was remarkable but by cutting the header, one can get even more out of the engine. If you're inquiring in order to cut the custom header to match the NR, I wouldn't. I'd go ahead and bench run and tune the engine with your specific setup. On an 11x8 APC prop, the engine can tach in excess of 15K on good fuel and environmental conditions. I saw no reason to use any other plug than the factory recommended NR plug so I didn't. NR in fact mentions that warranty is voided if one doesn't use the C6S plug.
Nice paint job!

Yes I'm going to bench run it in the next few days. Not cut, 11x7, stock plugs. If it's in the ball park I'll leave it. Just needing to know so I can install the pipe mount where I need. Can't wait to hear it

Ran it last nite for the first time. The low needle is so rich it almost doesn't come off idle. Once it does it's very smooth. When it gets on the pipe, it screams but I only opened it up for a few seconds. I was just letting it run at 1/3 mostly. Comes on the pipe at half throttle. Does that seem ok? Another tank or two today will be in order.

It's an ABC engine so I'd be cautious of breaking it in at 1/3 throttle. Don't worry too much about the idle at the moment, just run it full throttle but keep the high speed needle quite rich. It's adjustable so just go full open on the needle so it's just breaking into 2-stroke. You want to get it all nice and lubed and set while running at operating temps. If you run it at 1/3 throttle, you run the risk of deforming the fit. At 2/3 throttle, the engine is hot enough to run so that's acceptable.
After a 1/2 gallon of fuel, you can start closing the needle getting it to peak for 30 sec or so at a time, then open it up again to cool off. After 3/4 to 1 gallon you should be ready to get the carb and pipe fine tuned. When there, it should tach in the 15K+ on 10% nitro and 20% oil on an 11x7. My preferred prop on it is an 11x8 though. Keeps it just under 15K with the nose levels a tad better. Pull on this pup is quite staggering.
BTW, I recommend ear protection... At close range, it's pretty serious.

Manual said low rpm only do it stays off the pipe. I don't know. I've ran allot of other engines in the past and I just fly them slightly rich and they are fine. I've got the high end slightly rich right now, as I'm sitting here letting out cool down. Every few minutes I lean the low end some and it's getting better. Starts on one flip. I can tell it's going to be a nice motor

Got another tank on it. Running it back and forth between half and 3/4 throttle and it's really smooth and getting better every tank. It'll idle but load yup a bit but that's ok for now.

Yes, the translations from Italian leave a lot to be desired and it's something I've brought up with NR more than once but in particular when I reviewed the engine. Anyhow, the instructions are wrong in some places as ABC engines are not broken in at low RPM since the engine doesn't get up to temperature for proper case/sleeve/piston expansion. If it's broken in "cold" the piston will wear out and never see proper fit in the hard chrome plated sleeve. Ringed piston engines are of course all together different.
I'm surprised the idle is off because the carbs are factory set (perhaps yours was played with by someone) and mine ticked over at ~1900-2200 RPM on all props I tried. The 12" props have it turning under 1900 but the engine is best on 11" props.
Once it's good to go though, it's a very impressive engine!

Thanks for the advice. Now it's got a few tanks on it, I'm more comfortable letting it get hot and run in more. Running was off since I screwed up the needles due to forgetting to take the paper towel out of the exhaust port from building the plane. But she's running great now. Still can't believe how smooth it is

In the 80's we ran the Rossis at around 11k with stretched pipes and 12x12, 13x10 props and 15%N-20%O. More than enough for the 9 pounders of the day, quiet, and terrific gas milage. Some of us used soft mounts but not everyone. It took time to get used to the different sound.
At some point I will build the larger Arrow and it's either the YS or the NR.
