Smaller pattern ships question?
Hello,
There have been a few threads with some smaller pattern ships lately. The SPA list mentions sizing down some of the classics. Does anyone have any favorites. I flew a Bridi Sun-Fli 4-20 with a OS 25Fabc. I know of the Flea -Fli, New Era, Tweedy Bird, Dash 25 and Supra Fly 25. I know MK kitted several others. Seeing the threads just got me to thinking about some of them.

I just got a new Norvel .074 last weekend and I was thinking about a little Brushfire. I know some here probably cringe at me changing classic designs, but I have to have fun. This has a 37.25" span and a carved foam fuse top.

That looks great! Make one for an OS15 and I will build it... I have had a lot of fun with small planes, you will try stuff with them that you would never think of with bigger stuff.
I have a partially built baby pattern ship from Gus Ozols, the designer of the Boxer series of planes. I can't remember what it is called at the moment (old timer's setting in??). I have a ST19 waiting for it when I get that far down the pile. Should be lots of fun.

RE: Smaller pattern ships question?
Back in my USAF days the 25 size were the only ones that fit my budget
Had all of these at one time or another: Sun Fli 4-20, Supra Fli (had 2 from the kit & 1 arf), Mattlas 20, Curare 20, Aurora 25, Joker 25 and Dash 25. The Joker flew the best, but it also had an OS 32 & the small MK retracts. One of the Supra Fli's also had a 32 & retracts. The others used the OS 28F.
They were all a lot of fun, maybe one day I'll pick up another MK kit put one together just for kicks

I am currently building a Gator Flea, it's a .40-sized Compensator. Since the Compensator is on the list of acceptable models, I assume it's acceptable.

Dave;
Do you happen to have the Miss Norway in your collection? If so I would be willing to pay to have a reduced plan for electric outrunner in the 450 to 480 class. I've seen a couple of these sell on Ebay in the last few months, bid short on both!

I have a Miss Norway kit in the box, which at some stage I'm going to make a start on duplicating and building. Do a search here for another thread where I've posted some pictures of the plan.

The RCM FTC II is Flight Training course vol. 2. I am trying to remember who had one. I made copies of the manuever descriptions many years ago. It was a great start for the novice/ sportsman pattern schedules. Give me a little time to see if I can locate it.
There was a pretty detailed build documented for the Miss Norway. I have wanted a Miss Norway ever since. I never knew it was kitted.

RE: Smaller pattern ships question?
Well, after some real serious searching, I found my Miss Norway plan from RCModeler. Wing span 57" length 54 1/4" wing area 610 sqin. I wonder if I could get these reduced at one of the copy shops?? Its a one page plan but a scratch build as there are no instructions. If anyone finds that build article I would gladly buy a copy of it!

RE: Smaller pattern ships question?
I have the Miss Norway article scanned from FTCII.
If anyone wishes to have a copy, PM me before the end of the weekend (Nov 19 CONUS) with your email address and I will send it back to you in .DOC form. The entire file is over 5M, so if you can't take that, let me know and I will send pages individually.

RE: Smaller pattern ships question?
Ron,
Many thanks again for the article scan. Just what I need to get cracking on it. As a point of interest, the scanned plans have a few details that the kit plans do not have; wing templates and canopy mould details, for instance.
It was good to see some info about possible engines to use. OS H60 as used in the article or a Webra Blackhead as shown on the plans. Both of these are fairly modest in the power department meaning a K&B61 should be a good bet too. A ST PDP Bluehead or an HB61 PDP would be fantastic. Why am I mentioning these engines in particular, well that's now my dilemma !!
Any of the modern 46 - 53 sized engines would easily be powerful enough and the new 55's would be be top notch too.
DerFly.

I think you would have to create a new class for that 8178. You would make the BPA stuff look slow....

My Peppermint Pattie (42" span Banshee look alike) powered by an HB.15 used to easily pass the piped/retract equipped full size pattern ships of the early Eighties. The only problem with this PP rendition was keeping it in sight.
The PP did the most mind blowing Lomcevaks I have ever seen. It did them so violently that you could actually hear them.
