Guys, I have a great running Hanno Special that was damaged in a crash a few years ago due to Rx battery failure. The front of the carb got chipped which is just cosmetic. But there are a couple of small cracks in the crankcase at the mouth of the carb mount area. I did run the engine on the bench a couple of years ago and it run fine. I know I will have to repair or replace the crankcase before flying the engine.

Does anyone know if a regular 61 RF-P crankcase will fit? Or anyone selling a replacement Hanno crankcase? I have tried repairing similar damage on an OS 46 VF engine using Devcon high temp epoxy in the past and it did seem to work so I can probably do the same with this engine.

Or would there be any interest in this engine if I were to let it go? I am not really looking to sell this engine but I would be very interested in a trade with a NIB Hanno pipe and good continent Hanno box and manual. I was able to recently obtain a new in box Hanno Special but the box is in bad shape. And, no, the new Hanno is not for sale.

I have #3783 which is used and slightly damaged and #6670 which is brand new. I got them from a friend and both came with only one tattered box. I am looking for a like new box with manual and accessories if case anyone has one for sale. I am also looking for a new in box Hanno pipe if anyone has a spare.

Am I right in assuming that my #6670 is a Hanno II? It is the ABC version, by the way.

I'm not certain of this but I believe the Hanno case is a modified RF case. The exhaust port has some additional machine work and I suspect that the intake and boost ports are also slightly different than the standard RF (or RF-P simply a pumped version of the RF).

David correct the Hanno had the exhaust milled out at the top corners, other than that the case is the same cylinder bearing size etc.

I would believe jayjayneri would have better luck finding a RF-P case before a Hanno case. If he wanted to he could file the corner to match his cylinder.

did you compare the Hanno & RF crankshafts as well? Again, not certain, but it's possible that the rear bearing race of the Hanno might be a little larger if the crankshaft was beefed up in that area. If the outer race is the same diameter, it's not a problem but the rear bearing for the RF might not work on the Hanno shaft - just speculating. I'm also not sure that the porting on the RF case is identical to the RF but that might not present a huge issue other than perhaps a little loss in power if any.

Yup, no doubt about that. Worse case scenario, if the RF case can be made to work, the engine will perform like a hybrid of sorts.

Yes, I am aware that I would need to port the exhaust a bit and the rear bearing may need to been changed to a slightly smaller one but the RF-P case can be made to work. I am also trying to track down an original Hanno crankcase from a damaged engine but if it does not work out, then the RF-P case would have to do. Thanks for the info guys.....

Just an update. I got a new OS61 RF crankcase and swapped it out with my damaged Hanno crankcase. Everything fit perfectly. I also broke out the Drexel and milled the tops of both sides of the exhaust port to match the original Hanno crankcase. Just waiting for my Modeltech Calypso to arrive so I can run this engine again. Since shifting to electric some years back, I miss the smell of nitro. LOL

The listing was a little misleading. The engine was not new and did not include pipe or header. It was a very low time engine based on the head color.

Very nice! Are you planning to run it? If so, what airplane?
You might want to consider purchasing one of Brian Gardner’s true ABC replacement piston/sleeve sets if you are going to run the engine. They last much longer than the stock parts. Look in the classic pattern forum on RCGroups for more information.

Hi Will,

I spoke with you re a second set I have a second Hanno that’s a “runner” that I’ll be running and have a Brian Gardner set ready for that engine (with 2 more sets on the way). I have the hatori header for it as well. I have two NIB Bolly Carbon EQ63 tunes pipes I plan to run too.

From what I can tell, the “runner” Hanno looks like it’s had a normal RF crankcase, and potentially a normal RF crankshaft. The rest of the engine appears to be Hanno. I’ve dremeled
the relief ports onto the exhaust exit to match the liner, but I can see the rear bearing face, so assume the crankshaft must be a normal RF crankshaft. Liner is definitely Hanno, as is the pump, Carby, head. It had no
serial number in it either. Has great compression.

The plane it’s going into is the Bolly Lotus 5, by Peter Goldsmith (90’s F3A plane). I have next to it Flying already, the Slingshot (I have a YS115S in that plane).

looking forward to running the Hanno as I still remember them as a kid when I was at the pattern contests.
