i finally found some heavy duty cardboard tube for which to craft some wing bolt holes. the filling and sanding has gone on enough. time to get started on the glassing. the wing is 1st. about 22 oz's before a coat of sanding sealer goes on. i'll try to keep track of the weight as i go. i use Minwax sanding sealer.

I'm going to be needing one of those tubes soon. What diameter (inside and outside) is the one you used? Is it by any chance an Estes rocket tube?
I could use one with a 1/2" ID. I'll have to check the LHS.
Thanks, David.
P.S. Actually I made a bolt guide from rolled paper and aliphatic resin around a brass tube but it's a touch heavy and not very rigid.

i looked around a lot for a tube of proper size and sturdiness and remembered my fax machine carbon paper rolls had a tube that might work. it was perfect. the tube is just big enough for a nylon bolt and it has a 1/4" thick wall. i will mail you one if you want it.

David,
much appreciated. I'll look around to see if I can find something suitable for the smaller model I'm working on - I'm only using #10 size bolts. I've been wondering about nickel sized paper tubes used by banks for stacking coins. It's a matter of seeing whether they are sturdy enough. I suppose I could always harden them.
I'll drop you a line if I'm in need of assistance Ever seen Wallace and Gromit?
Thanks, David.

not a lot going on these days with the BA. the wife got laid off so i make up the difference with working a lot more. i have, however, glassed the wing and am mostly done with sanding it. the white rattle can primer was to much work so i switched to an automotive sandable primer that i simply rolled on. it's a lot of work sanding it off but the ultra smooth results are worth it. there will be no weave showing after that primer coat. the fuse is ready for glass, i just need to get to it.

glassing the fuse has started. i sealed it 1st and added a coat of watered down hobbylite balsa filler before sanding it smooth. after cleaning the fuse with tack cloth i decided to start the glass in the nose retract area. what a pita. i had to lay the pieces in 1" increments and still didn't finish. is there an easier way to finish this area? i don't want to leave it raw.

the glassing continues. i am using .50 oz cloth, starting from the bottom back and working my way up and forward. the cloth is so thin i've never had a problem with overlaps. after filling in the weave and sanding they won't be noticeable.

thx guys. with the glass done it will be multiple coats of minwax polycrylic and sanding until the weave is filled. one coat is drying at this moment, in 20 minutes it will be dry enough for another coat. every 3 coats i will sand out the imperfections.

now comes the fun part. mixing baby powder into the polycrylic makes for some interesting sanding. the baby powder comes off on droves, leaving me smelling like a baby. after i am satisfied the the weave fill in i will apply a couple more layers of straight polyc.

one problem that has popped up is the tail section sheeting. it ended up sanded so thin that i have a shallow very flexible dip. now what do i do? the low spot is the dark shadowed area in the center.

When left with a dimple like that, I usually use some red glazing compound to fill the depression, and sand it flush.
please don't ask how I know how to fix such a goof..............done it many times, that's how.

If it is spongy the dampness of the Minwax might be softening the balsa and causing warping. Not an unusual problem using water base products on balsa. You might be able to super glue a small balsa stick to the dwell area and along with some other scrap balsa build something to hold it out until it dries out. If not you’ll need to fill it with something strong like micro-balloons, but sanding it out could be difficult.

it is definitely a warp issue. i wondered as i was glassing the area why it appeared raw. i think i missed painting sanding sealer there. what about injecting a small amount of expanding foam? maybe clamping each side with ply while the foam expands?

RE: Another Blue Angel build
I’ve never had much luck with expanding foam because it is too difficult to control. You could cut a slot and slide a rib under it. Normally the grain should be vertical on the stab and that would have reduced the problem some, but in your case it makes it easier to cut a slot and add some ribs in there. Or just fill the low area.

You may not appreciate smelling like a baby, but I bet your wife sure does.....[sm=lol.gif]
Keep up the good work!!

i think i will fill in the low area 1st. it wouldn't be a huge issue to cut the entire interior out if the fill in doesn't work.

And next time David, you will make the grain go up the fin, as 8178 says. We all learn from these mistakes, someone has to do it, cause I won't live long enough to make them all on my own...
