RE: Another Blue Angel build
David,
excellent work! Your masking work is improving by the layer!
I'm sure that once she's been clear coated, she will gleam!
Can't wait to see her with all gear up. I like the work you did on the aileron servos. The side mounts provide a clean wing and nice linear linkage.
David.

chuck, glad you're back. yes, the weather has been nice, just a couple of frosts so far this fall. we all hope to see updates on the Atlanta thread soon.
david, i've always liked the side mount approach. it just seems a little cleaner.
thx for the comments.

i'm trying to make up my mind as to whether to try frisket film or to pull it off and go with a conventional masking approach. here the frisket is already under the template and stretched tight. theoretically, i would cut out the template in the frisket and paint from there. i might play it safe ,pull the frisket and go with the masking technique. any opinions? thx.

RE: Another Blue Angel build
Hi David, I used a hansa masking film and 3M narrow masking tapeon my F-18 build. While the masking film made it possible to cut out the shape first, I found there was possible for some paint tobleed under the edge (my build anyway). I didsome with 3M masking tape from the autobody and the line was sharp with no bleed through. If I had to retouch up an area, I just taped the edge with 3M tape. It followed the curve very well.
I likeyour work. The Blue Angel looks great.

thx Jim. yours is looking good too. do you think clear coating the pattern in the masking film would've prevented the bleeding?

RE: Another Blue Angel build
I do not know. I didn't have any clear coat to try it. I think you only have a couple of chances to get the film placed properly on the plane. Since you are just doing the arrows on the side of the plane, you could just use the masking tape. I think it would be easier to make a straight line. I used 3m tape to do the tapered gold on the top of the decking. I useda large piece of masking film to cover the white section on the wing. Next time I will use tape there. I know now I can follow a line pretty good with the masking tape.

Jim, i tend to agree. for the long straight lines i may acquire a extra wide roll of the green tape. it might help with the sagging and stretching. pulling a piece of even 3/4" wide tape doesn't mean it will lie perfectly along a straight line. i find that the tape can sag or stretch out of a straight line.

i decided against using the frisket film. it would not have held up to the sanding between colors that the nelson paint requires. the masking tape wasn't anymore difficult anyway. lots of color coming this weekend.

the white is first as i have another color (yellow) to apply on the same fuse. in between will be the remaining color (blue) on the wing. i might be spraying with one hand and holding a turkey drumstick in the other hand. and we can't forget about football.

some things went well. if you look closely the 1st photo shows you can see the clear coat i used to seal the masking. i used a small flat artist's brush to apply the clear. better than all the setup time involved with an airgun or airbrush. the rest are just progress photos on the white lightning stripe.

other things didn't go so well. the dreaded hangar rash syndrome struck the BA. hopefully the repair will be made today and tomorrow and i can still get the blue paint on tomorrow afternoon.

As he said in Forest Gump "It happens". The arrows on the side of the plane turned outgreat. How soon after the paint was applied did you remove the masking tape?

i understood to pull the tape before the paint dried completely but i have found that waiting for quite a while works better. i pull the tape all the way back flush not straight up. there is less tearing this way. i've had the paint lift a couple of times when i pulled straight up. i repaired the lifts with a using a fine artist's brush and clear canopy glue.

the repair is well under way. i didn't want to risk the filler cracking so i covered it with a small piece of fiberglass with polycrylic. should be ready for primer tomorrow.

i'm having fun. somewhere earlier in my thread i mentioned shopping out the paint work to an airbrush artist and one of the guys here suggested i should do it myself. i need to thank him. i'm glad i followed his suggestion.
