RE: Peppermint Pattie build
Rick,
I'd say that the OS 15 CVA mentioned above in my post as well as the K&B 18 should be good options. I've heard some negative comments about the K&B but mostly from folks expecting a racing engine.
Here's the link to the OS:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXXD72&P=7
There area of course also the much less expensive FP's and LA's available.
Norvel engines are apparently back in production too as of July this year. They are now making 15, 25 and 40 size engines as well. The email of the US distributor is [email protected]. I haven't looked for their web site. Here's an interesting MAN article on the AX 40 from back in 2004:
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/m...7/ai_n9409875/
The specs of the K&B 18 (8801) are here:
http://www.mecoa.com/kb/aero/aircraft.htm
And then there's the Cox (K&B) Conquest 15 which is discontinued...

FB, I've got a Magnum 15XL I'm going to use, price is right and they seem to last a while and plenty of power. Hobby people sell them ,thinking they have a newer model out now XLS maybe??? Pete

All good options Guys. Have to give it some thought. What about a Super Tigre 23? I've got a couple of them, too much for this airframe? Thoughts?

RE: Peppermint Pattie build
Rick,
I don't think so but I might be wrong. Marian built his PP to about 40 oz. I'm planning to put a G23 into the 40 oz (currently) Deception simply because it is roughly the same weight as the G15. If overpowered, I guess I'll drop down to the G15 but I don't think the performance difference between the two is significant. I doubt the G23 performs anything like an X25 or an OS 25 AX for example. It is probably comparable to a modern 15 such as the Magnum.
Don's models will probably build to 30-36 oz AUW. If they build to 25 oz then anything over a low cost 20 would be overkill. In fact, they would probably fly nicely with a 10-15.
Just my thoughts.
David.

Guys contact me at [email protected] for pricing for cores and plans.. Anyone else want cores or plans contact me at same addy [email protected] for info ... I will cut more after Thanksgiving Holiday.
Thanks for the support.
scott
PS: Don't forget I have the PPII (60) size plans and cores cut and will also be cutting a few sets of 40 size if anyone interested.

No, they won't be too much for PP. They don't produce the horsepower that my old HB .15 baffle piston engines produce while swinging 7x4 Top Flite nylon props. The HB .15 is lightweight and really revs up, putting many of the modern schneurle ported .15's to shame.
My ST G.23 wouldn't rev up the way that my ST G20/15 would rev. And my HB .15 is considerably stronger than the G20/15 R/C engines that I own. You should have the ability to get out of bad low speed situations with the ST G.23 while swinging a larger prop than the .15's are capable of swinging. But, the Peppermint Pattie is not a model meant for slow speed flying. It needs to go like the dickens.
As fast as my PP was with either the ST G20/15 or the even stronger HB .15, I don't think I would care to venture into .18 schneurle ported engine sizes. As it was, with just the HB .15 on the nose, my PP could zoom right past a piped G60 Bluehead equipped Curare with retracts with no trouble at all. It is hard to keep something that fast and small in sight. It becomes a bit of a chore after a while.

Good stuff Pete.
Mine should ship next week since Scott had to leave town. Please do post some snaps of your build if you feel so inclined.
Pipes arrived safe and sound - the 200 11.5" pipe is just right on the Skymaster. Many thanks!

The modern 15's are much stronger than the old baffle piston ST 23 engines. Yeah, hard to believe, but true. I'm afraid that the ST .23's days of glory have passed it by.
Another way to get a more agile plane is to equip it with a lighter, but very powerful, engine, such as the Sanye .12 engine. Put a 7x4 prop on that little screamer and be amazed at the power and the benefits of flying the air frame at a lighter OAW.

***I just stumbled upon my previous post on this same topic. I am referring to the older baffle piston ST 23's in both articles, not the blue/square head variant that came along later. I have no experience with that little ST. Sure wish I had some experience with it.

Here is .15 version, nice CAD work by Gene Rock. I used to have this posted on my plan website, but not lately. I have been meaning to send this off to Outerzone, I got the OK from Nick and Gene to do that some time ago.
As for engines, I found that an old baffle .15-.19 was plenty for it. I had a ST.23 in mine at the end and I felt it flew better with a smaller lighter engine,
Mine had an OS.15, OS.20 and the ST .23 in it over the years. My current one has the blue OS LA .15 installed.
