1) it looked cool 2) it presented well 3) rolling manuvers were the best of anything out there.
Wayne made a good looking plane that looked different, but it still flew great.
Being large (upwards of 9 lbs) it sometimes had trouble with the vertical and energy manuvers (sq horizontal 8 was a killer....). But it made up for it otherwise.
Not everyone was successful campaigning the design, but quite a few folks made them fly on rails.

Tom, I was thinking the same thing looking at the photo Chris posted. I really think we have to tip our hats to a designer who can create a model that looks strikingly different from the crop, yet still perform well. That rear three-quarter view looks fantastic. It looks more like a ducted fan jet than a pattern plane.

Most had Rossi power.
Both of mine had Rossi .61 engines up front.
I think Jeff Urcan flew Rossi. Lance Murphy and some of the other CT guys flew Rossi power.
Tony Bonnetti flew Webra. I think Dean Kogar flew both Rossi and webra eventually (circus hobbies era)
Bill Commeford was very successful with OS VR power.
Hunt's plane and a few others campaigned with YS power.
One or two I recall had OPS engines up front.
It just need a good, reliable and screaming engine up front.
Yeah, the plane really excelled in Masters class where you could write your own pattern and edit out some of the hard stuff. Became a challenge at those contests that ran combined Expert/Masters flying the Expert sequence (1983 ish)

Yeah..... its possible
I just have to get Dub to make up some 15deg headers. Right now he only has straight and fuse top. He does have the angled o-ring adapter.... that actually might work out too.

I had an EU-1A kit under my workbench when I went to the '83 nats at Westover. It was hot and the powerplants were screaming their 'brains' out trying to provide enough power. Actually, the EU-1As did very well in the first 3 classes (I think Art Fressola placed in the top 5 in expert), but not quite so well in Masters (aka FAI); Ivan K. won with a gorgeous Citation. I sold the EU-1A kit and built 2 Arrows. Wish I'd kept the EU-1A, guess I'll have to get one from Dan Hines (I think his glass work is better than the original).

The EU1-A was my favorite of all the AMA pattern airplanes. Mike Patrick and Mike Jenkins of Lousiville, Ky built my wings and I did the rest and it weighed 9lbs with a Rossi .61 and pipe (no vertical problem at all). Used Dave Brown retracts. It had a flying stab and would fly like it was on rails. My partner, Carol Reesor, flew an EU1-A with a straight stab and elevators that weighed 9.25 lbs with a OS .61RV. It flew as well as mine except for loops. With the flying stab all you had to do was pull up (or down as the case may be) and watch. With the elevator version you had to work the elevator more to make it round. She won first place in Sportsman, I won first place in Advance and Lewis Patton won first place in Expert at the 21 Annual Mid-South Championships 1985 in Nashville. All three of us were flying EU-1As. That was one great weekend.

Red/White are Lance Murphy and Art Fresolo (CT, 1983)
I if I recall, the 3rd one is Bill Comerfords.

Right now that list includes the T2A MK I, II, III, and IV, Brushfire, New Orleanian, Patrcia, T2-40, Equalizer, Tanglefoot, Kirkland's A-6 and just getting ready to release the EU1 A. Is anyone still watching this thread? I just joined to see if there was any activity/availibility on EU1's still around. I flew one for 1 year in 1989 in Sportsman class. It was a windy year, and I got hammered! Those things flew like kites in the breeze!! Still, I loved the plane with a passion, and it remains my favorite pattern kit of all time. I used 1/2" of anhedral in the stab; it was supposed to cure the canopy pitch tendancy on upward, vertical lines. Maybe it did, maybe it didn't; vertical likes were not usually that long to have to worry obout it! Mine was heavy at 10.3 lbs, with a OS 61RF-P, swinging the then new APC 12-10, and it struggled. I traded the next year for the most stable windy-day aircraft I could find; a Summit III. Very nice ship.
There was a few comments about hte EU1 vs. the EU1-A. I believe the currently kitted model from Dan is the EU1-A. Is there any information or camparitive data available for the original EU1, which I suppose was larger? With today's engines in mind, it would be neat to see this plane uncorked!!
