Built up Wing for Wolfgang Matts Arrow

Hey all. A while back someone asked for a built-up wing version of Wolfgang Matts Arrow 60 as it used foam cores. I decided to produce a Built-up Wing Plan version for the Arrow and am offering it to any one who would like a digital copy. PM me your email and I'll send it along.

I would also like feedback on the landing gear blocks and double aileron servo setup that is designed into the plan. This is the first plan I have produced, so I would like to know if it is a good design because I plan to produce built-up wing plans for several other foam core only pattern plans that I have.

I can change the plans if needed for a better design.

Oh ya, almost forgot. I used a set of Spring Airs as the template for the landing gead blocks.

    Hey Bryan,

Good stuff! Are you also building an Arrow?

I'd be interested in taking a look at your plans. I believe you have my email address but I can PM you if needed.

    Cheers, David.

RE: Built up Wing for Wolfgang Matts Arrow

    Doxilla, plans sent.

I am going to build an Arrow. It was the first plan I purchased when I got back into the hobby. I had to put off building it cause I didn't realize at the time that it had a foam core wing until I got the plan. Don't have a foam cutter yet.

Let me know what you think.

The RCM&E plan should still be available from the magicalia website, all balsa, built-up wing. Same outlines as the MAN plan.

When I orignally set out to purchase the Arrow plans I searched all over the web and finally found them at www.rcstore.com.

I did a search for the magicalia site and found nothing on the Arrow. I think it now called http://www.myhobbystore.com/ and no Arrow plan there either. I'm also in the U.S. so maybe that's why I can't find it though a search.

Kinda a mute point now as I'm offering a built up version of the wing for free. You can get the complete foam wing plan version from the RC Store above if needed.

Post the link to the magicalia plans if you have it. I'd like to get a copy if it's still available.

This is the best I was able to do:

    http://www.myhobbystore.com/c/294/Pl...Aerobatic.html

... but no Arrow plan. Interestingly, a 51" 40 sized Atlas plan. Wasn't the Atlas the predecessor to Matt's Arrow?

    Yes. That is my understanding as well. From the MAN June 1980 article;

"The aircraft goes back to a 1973 design called Super Star, which was followed by the 1975 World Championship Atlas, and now the present Arrow. The airplane is, for all intents and purposes, an Atlas modernized to meet current FAI requirements. "

From what I read in the MAN Arrow build article and other places, having the pipe inside helped with balance and during certian maneuvers.

    Cool stuff!

RE: Built up Wing for Wolfgang Matts Arrow

    Thanks contributing ppljr.

When I found out that the Arrow's predessor was the Atlas I thought maybe the wings would be similar enough so that i could use it as a guide for doing a built up wing for the Arrow. After I compared the two I realized that Wolfgang Matt changed the wing significantly from the Atlas. Although I could have used the Atlas wing I wanted to stay as true as possible to the original Arrow design.

I was talking with Aurora 60 about the Arrow wing and he noticed the same thing I did about the tip rib. The thickest portion is centered on the rib instead of the the normal first 1/3. The thickest part of the cord of the wing changes dramatically from root rib to the tip. Also the wing is swept a lot more on the trailing edge than on the Atlas.

RE: Built up Wing for Wolfgang Matts Arrow

I've flown both the Arrow and the Atlas, though it's been a couple of decades and then some...
The design changes that Matt made to the Arrow reflect changes in flight requirements (more vertical demands, good looping and rolling characteristics) in the FAI maneuvers. Interestingly, the Atlas was designed before the tuned pipe era (I think the prototype was flown with a Webra speed and muffler), but responded nicely to additional power. The Atlas I flew was powered with a ST X60 rear exhaust and had a more constant speed 'feel' to it (like the Deception - similar wing: thick airfoil with a rearward high point). The Arrow (with an OS 61VF) was much faster (both used an 11x7 at the time) and needed less rudder in the rolling manuevers, but both flew very well in wind or calm.

Thanks for your work Bryan. The drawings are excellent!

The idea of building a rear exhaust, piped model has been percolating through my head for a while. Especially since I now have a decent candidate for power.

You guys are gona like this.

This is a short stroke 61 RF-P. I swapped out the long stroke piston and liner with a 61 VF piston and liner and swapped out the long stroke crankshaft wtih the VF crank. According to what Clarence Lee said in the Hanno article I should get 400 to 500 more RPM's out of this baby cause it doesn't have the two piece crankcase. He he.

Now, that is cool. I'm working out a couple of projects that are similar but won't elaborate until they are tested.

    Bryan,

Nice! Now there's a power plant for your classic 11x7-1/4" Rev-Up prop! I'm sure you have some.

For my part, never having flown it, I'm curious about LS 12x10 APC power - either on a Hanno or a YS...

I'm always on the lookout for Rev Up's. They're cool props.

    I have to settle for using 11x7 1/2, 11x7 3/4 and 11x8 Super M's.
