Default An MK 20 Size Conservation Project

With the help of Rusty Dose and the Classic Pattern Trader, I have been fortunate to communicate with whom I'll call Mr. Joe - an MK kit collector, pilot and classic pattern fan. Given my recent interest in reduced scale pattern classics, my eye immediately caught a glimpse of the pictures shown in the first issue of the CP-T of the various 20 size kits that Joe had in his collection. After some exchanges, Joe has been kind enough to lend me two of his 20 size kits - a Curare 20 and a Cosmos 20 - so that I may do what is necessary to preserve these rare classics. Once done, the kits will be returned to Joe's collection.

Here is what I would like to do as a conservation project of these beautiful kits:
[ul][*] Trace all the die cut and custom shaped parts onto graph paper.[*] Scan these tracings into a computer and transfer the scans into CAD for electronic printing.[*] Scan all original paperwork that comes with the kits (plans, instructions, etc.) so that they may be reprinted and/or included with the short kits.[*] Produce laser cut and/or CNC cut files for the parts in order to have a kit producer manufacture fairly complete wood short kits.[*] For those designs that have canopies (I don't think any had cowls), ideally be able to reproduce these with the help of talented and generous members of this forum.
[/ul]
With that said, I would be most grateful for the participation of any of you talented folks to assist, if interested, in this project. Given the kits are now here (at the P.O. actually) I would undertake the initial tracing and scanning of wood parts as well as of the paperwork. Where I could use help, given my lack of CAD expertise, is with the transfer of the tracing scans into CAD and eventually in to a laser cut file for reproduction. Of course, I could also use help from anyone able to produce molds for vacuforming of the canopies.

As a preliminary disclaimer, given the vintage and out of production nature of these kits, it seems to me that no rights would be breached by a few classic pattern fans wanting to preserve these designs for their own personal use. No commercial interest is attached to this project and all parties involved would be volunteering their time and efforts toward the project. The only eventual financial transactions would occur in the paying of a laser kit for the production and materials of the kit as is the case with many other 60 size out of production classics currently manufactured by laser cutters. Of course, it is expected that any volunteers of the project would naturally be interested in a kit or two for their own personal enjoyment. This includes Mr. Joe himself who is generously volunteering his kits and is particularly fond of the smaller 20 size models for their ease of transportation and flying on a whim nature.

On a note of financial matters, the arrival of these two borrowed kits at my address will incur a substantial cost to me ($123 to be exact) due to the fact that the P.O. is requesting taxes on the insured value of the parcel. Joe, being cautious with his precious cargo, insured the two kits for a large sum in the event of damage or loss. I'd like to comment that Joe has kindly paid for the postage himself ($63) to ship these two kits to me. This results in a total initial expense of $186 in order to be able to commence this project. There will be some additional expenses in materials and in the scanning of plans as well as some overhead expenses (computer time) but otherwise the bulk of the effort and costs should be in the labor of the work to be done.

With those figures set forth, any donations that you would like to contribute to the project would be welcomed and appreciated and will likely help to expedite the project. Donations are accepted in the form of a Pay-Pal transfer (or otherwise if necessary) and the funds will be put toward the expenses undertaken by those involved in the project. If you are interested in making a donation, please enter a post on this thread and I'll send you a PM with Pay-Pal account details.

Since my view of this hobby is to share and include whenever or however I can, the resulting short kits will be offered to any and all interested parties whether they chose to assist with labor and/or financially or not. I'm excited about beginning this project and hope to hear from others who may be too. If successful, I hope to be able to continue this project with other classic kits that Joe may be willing to share for the cause. Next time, we'll find a way to reduce the costs involved.

I look forward to your posts with thoughts and comments on this project.

David.

David,

Count me in. I guess I'll have to start tracing the Magic 20 kit out.

Pedro,

excellent! I knew I could count on you. The Magic 20 will be a really nice addition!

I'll be picking up the kits next week so I should be able to get a start. Since MK kits are metric, I was thinking of tracing on to mm graph paper so we'd have drawn in scale. It's of course a simple matter to write down an inch scale too for reference.

I should mention that in addition to the following:
[ul][*] Curare 20[*] Magic 20[*] Cosmos 20
[/ul]
potential other kits that could be added to this project (i.e., they are in existence) include the following:
[ul][*] Aurora 25[*] Blue Angel 20[*] Atlas 20 (Matlas)
[/ul]
Reports from Joe who has apparently built all of these kits at some point are that his favorite is the Cosmos 20. Personally, I'd really like to see the addition of the Skymaster 20 to this list which is one of the few 20 size MK designs specifically for RE piped engines such as the MAX 25 VF DF - a real beast! I'm not sure if an Arrow 20 ever existed - but we won't get ahead of ourselves...

Let the project begin!

Anyone else!?

David.

David, I would be able to help with the CAD stuff if you need. I had done this years ago with an IM ZLIN Z50L which was put together the same way wit Die Cut parts. Unfortunally I no longer have the drawings, scans or other info.

With electronic file transfer it should be a snap. Email if needed.

Cheers

Ghost,

thanks for your offer to assist and your interest in the project. Thankfully you're CAD volunteer #3. I'll keep you all in mind as I'm sure there will be plenty of CAD work to go around. For a starters, there are three models to be done, so you could each do one of them. The only caveat would be to standardize on a universal file format which in CAD shouldn't be a problem.

Once the CAD work for each model is done, it would be good to find a single talented volunteer to produce laser cut files for all three of them. A couple of forum members come to mind.

First things first...

Dave, zap me your Paypal info and I'll be happy to help defray a bit of the cost. My favourite would be the Cosmos 20 having flown the full size version many years ago. It served me well.

You ever near Ottawa?....maybe for the IMAC Nats next weekend? I'd invite you to drop by for coffee, or maybe something stronger :-) Have a look at my Aurora as well.

Jeff,

nice to hear from you. Thanks for your generous offer to make a donation to the project. I'll send you a PM with the PP info and my coordinates.

Yes, I actually do go down to Ottawa once in a while for work. Unfortunately, I usually drive there and back the same day. If I can, I try to stop by a LHS as it's always fun.

Actually, coming down to the IMAC Nats next weekend sounds like a great idea! I rarely go to these events (family and such). Seeing your Aurora in person would be a real treat! I'll look into my schedule and see if I can make it. Is there a web site with the event details?

Gentlemen,

thank you for your responses. First off, I'd like to thank everyone so far for the excellent support of this project.

Second, I'd like to thank Jeff (Bootalini) for his generous donation. Pete, I'll send you a PM with the PP info. If it makes sense from a practical standpoint, I'll eventually open up a PP account to support the project.

Third, FB, thanks for rounding out one of the aspects of the project - reproduction of these canopies is of utmost importance.

Original MK kits will be picked up later today and I'll have the first snaps of the kit contents in preparation for parts tracing.

'gday to all.

Could I please get a message with the PP info??

I'd Love a little baby Aurora, Skymaster and Cosmos!!

There is a dude (Jim Duda) who has .25 Aurora which I've been admiring the photos of for years....Not to mention the more recent photos of Union Models Aurora 60 alongside his baby Aurora!!! Good Stuff... [8D]

I owe some folks some fiberglass stuff already (I havn't forgotten)...If there turns out to be any cowl's necessary then it's possible I could help...I'm just slow is the only problem...

Good Luck with your endeavors...

Chuck

I started with the Cosmos - a beauty and marvel of Japanese design and engineering!

Defintely bigger than your average 25 size model, at 52+" span it is, in my opinion, best suited for engines .28 - .35 in displacement with the MAX 32 SX and 35 AX probably being the star candidates (there are Webra's too but that would break the Japanese tradition somewhat). It is designed for a side mounted engine with either muffler exhausts or a tuned pipe running in the belly plan and the header partially exposed. To me, the ABC trio:
[ul][*] Aurora 25[*] Blue Angel 20[*] Cosmos 20
[/ul]
constitute the MK 20 size standards with the Skymaster 20 being the RE lone star of the quartet.

The photos below provide a general overview and specs of the Cosmos 20 (apologies for the questionable quality).

Cosmos 20

I did a preliminary inventory of materials and parts and took some photos while I was at it. Unfortunately, I have to report that the kit is missing one sole piece of balsa - R2 - the TE portion of the rudder. Fortunately this is an easy piece to trace from plans and measure up and reproduce. I'll have to report the news to Joe.

Here are some pictures of the wood contents in the following order:
[ul][*] Wing (first shot)[*] Empennage (second shot)[*] Fuse (various shots)
[/ul]
Wood quality, weight and attention to detail is surprising even with these lower cost kits (well,... once upon a time). In particular, what is nice to see are the preshaped CNC balsa blocks that considerably assist in the building of the model and reduce the amount of shaping and sanding required. The pieces are primarily used in the front nose/cowl area and the fuse/fin junction. These blocks will require the most attention in CAD in order to be reproduced.

The Curare 20 was next. A true classic and perhaps the most recognized pattern plane of all time.

It is a smaller model well suited to the various .25 size engines available - with or without pipe. At 47+" span and 428 squares it would do well built to 48-50 oz. No provision for the pipe is designed into this model and so the side mounted engine would have the pipe tucked under the wing as many 60 size classics do (e.g., the Tiporare - it's American cousin).

I've yet to unpack the kit and do the inventory but I did manage to get some box and plan pictures.

A quick note to Chuck:

Thanks for offering to help with any FG work. I believe that most MK designs (including the larger ones) rarely had FG cowls - they always shaped this section from wood. However, some kits have FG belly pans and others may have a FG turtle deck (e.g., the Skymaster 20). In the rare event that we should be able to land such a kit, then there will be a need for reproduction of those FG parts.

You will know if there is! [8D]

Thanks again, David.

P.S. In the meantime, we'll let you concentrate on another small pending matter - an Atlanta fuse!

The MK Project

The following photo is courtesy of the "Classic Pattern-Trader" of Joe's fleet of MK kits. Imagine my surprise coming upon 3 or 4 or these gems being unloaded from a vehicle at my local flying field!

Great project Dave and the support and generosity provided by the "group" is terrific. Count me in for cash, contribution of parts or ?

Freebird and Rusty,

thanks for your generous support. PM's with PP info sent.

Great picture of Joe's fleet. I sent him an email yesterday letting him know about this thread in case he'd like to follow the developments. I understand he's not too fond of computers though.

The Curare 20 will be unpacked and an inventory made this evening. After that it will be on to beginning the parts tracing. I hope to be able to fit most everything on 8x11 (letter) or 8x14 (legal) size paper but items such as fuse sides will need to be traced on to longer sheets. Perhaps this can be done by assembling letter sheets, tracing and then disassembling for ease of scanning purposes. The various sheets can then be joined in CAD.

FB, I'm awaiting approval from Joe on shipping the canopies to you. What time frame would you say is needed to produce copies?

Thanks, David.

Curare 20

Here are the inventory shots for the Curare. Fewer parts than for the Cosmos as expected as it is also a simpler model to build - standard fuse box construction with a sheeted turtledeck supported by a longeron above semicircular balsa formers. The nose/cowl area is also simpler with two blocks - one above and one below and two blocks on each side of the nose gear bay fairing into the wing LE airfoil. This model should go together fairly quickly.
[ul][*] Wing (first 4 shots)[*] Empennage (5th shot)[*] Fuse (remaining shots)
[/ul]
Fewer pieces in this kit that require 3D CAD rendition - essentially two nose blocks, and two fin blocks (LE and subfin).

The laborious task of tracing will commence after matching the parts listings (inventory) to wood thicknesses and dimensions.

Default RE: An MK 20 Size Conservation Project

Pedro,

I don't know if you've had a chance to start on the Magic yet but when you do, it would be nice to have some parts shots (similar to those here) depicting the kit contents and the shape of things. This would be a useful reference for both CAD drafting (though I imagine you'd do the CAD for the Magic yourself) as well as eventual builds.

I'm completing the inventory lists of the 2 kits and will send them to you for reference so that you may do the same (ideally) with the Magic. Given the lack of parts listings and/or separate instructions in MK kits, these documents could prove quite useful in the long run for actual building (as well as for the re-production of the kits). It took me a couple of hours per kit to sort out what was what and to make a hand list of all the parts - though I haven't sorted out wood sizing for each part yet.

David.
