Addendum to the "TP" method: (Sorry, it takes awhile for some of these old memories to fully percolate up from the depths...)

Using the cheap one ply "Scott" tissue, (you know the one that you would never actually wipe with) is to roll the entire roll over the wing or surface the opposite way that it unrolls. This way the roll absorbs the excess resin, the you just unroll the saturated tissue off of the roll, and you are good to go again. Very easy and simple. The roll does the pressing down of the cloth for you. I wish that I had remembered this earlier today.

Robert - MattK - Never too old to learn new trick's. First, I did Robert's method today. After pulling the paper up, Bounty in this case, I had an almost dry surface, and still had resilency. Instead of a shiny shell, I had a dull shell, but still a glass surface. I am going to add something here. Robert, just for my own satisfaction, a light coat of resin on top of this. I did not tell you or MattK, but I use the single edge razor method for any high spot's. With this method, no puddle's as you said, there will be minimum dust-up when sanding.

MattK, I am going to use your method on the next panel. Don't necessarily think there will be much weight difference, as the dope is going to evaporate most of the weight. Both method's look good to me. Thanks guy's.

Robert, I am looking for an un-built Focus Sport, ARF. Should have bought two of them while I was at it. I have posted on the pattern forum's, talked to Central, mail to Piedmont. I will pay $400.00 shipped, immediate PayPal payment. I am trying to find out now, if there is any ARC's left, and trying to purchase covered, wing and stab's. They have always advertised parts available, I am thinking that if I get the ARC, then most of the work is doing the fuselage.

Matt, let you know, I have some dope here that I always used to seal the wood before film covering.

Takin' a break. OK, I am going to glass the other wing panel, then put all of this up, maybe for a while. I fiinally got my hands on another Piedmont Focus Sport, ARC, NIB. In addition to that, I was able to get a complete covered wing set, stab, rudder and fin, all covered. I am flying the first Focus Sport with the YS110DZ. Going to build the back-up plane, start ama pattern, again. Still waiting on the new YS115S, Central has no idea when they will get here.
It has replaced the YS110.

If anyone has been following this thread, and learning a little, you can probably pick up the other Phoenix 6 to finish on the other P-6 build thread. Go to: "Finish the Phoenix Paint", thread. Do the search at top of box, left side.

Thanks for looking,

Crank

A coat of resin over this will give you a very nice base for your finish. I am glad that it worked well for you.

Another reply to 10 week's ago. You guy's did me right. I am glassing a Focus fuselage. Resin, glass cloth, paper towels, apply, smooth in, remove, what a time saver. The P-6 from this thread is waiting for paint, doing some flying, practice, AMA and SPA, building another Focus Sport, YS110. Need plenty of practice.

Going to fly it some day, I have a receiver coming for it. Send up to Radio South, get it refreshed, updated. I thought about putting 2.4 in, but 72 mhz will probably be wide open. I think with modern servo's, etc., should be fine set. I gave a friend of mine a WE Expert black box, open gimbal's, he is flying it, no problem's. Love those stick's.

Vince,

Got anymore of the those Proline radios laying around....? BTW, nice build thread as you said this morning. Working on my P6 right now, have the wing and stab panels done. Will use epoxy (West Systems) and carbon veil for attaching the skins to the cores. Otherwise all is similar to your method.

May be back at it. Last time worked on P-6 # 2, August 10, this year. Too many iron's in the fire, plus the AMA plane's, etc. Klxmaster finishing the Vertigo II, got my enthusiasm up again, and I will get ready for Dave Phillip's contest near Birmingham, a town called Morris, AL, I think. Plan is to get the retract's in P-6 #1, and try to get this one finished, test fly, trim and set-up for transport to AL. If #2 not finished, take one of the Intruder's. Hopefully, I wil do just fine with flying again, getting rusty.

Picture here, of setting up the stab, ready to cover. The 1/16" plywood template's will sandwich the tip's, as usual, epoxy on the 3/8"X1/4" TE stock, 1/2"X1/2" LE. Cap the tip's, 1/16" sheeting with Southern Sorghum, there will be an lip on the LE inside, the sheet will butt to it, carve to LE finish, complete, then glass. Goal right now, get this stab finished and epoxied in, whole fuse ready for primer. Couple picture's included, where I want to be in a few day's, after Christmas family stuff. I am in luck though, as my wife and daughter ask me around Thanksgiving, what I want for Christmas, and they get the list, gift certificate's from Horizon or Central. Central this year, as I have the new YS115 on backorder, and I need other stuff.

Nice work Vince.

If you are needing an engine till your order from Central (YS115) I have a 110 you can borrow.   No telling how long it will take; it has been over 1 year since they announced the 115.

I had to find this thread again. Back to P-6 #2, I gave the red-white and blue one to a very good friend in Ohio. He maidened it last week, said if fly's like on rail's, everything right. Included here, picture's of working on stab, built this today, trying to get on fast track with this #2 P-6, anxious to paint it a different color, get into some aqua, cream, etc. Lot to copy from what has been posted by other's on this site. Saw some nice stuff on RCG's also.

Just covered the stab core's after sanding, kind of look's rough compared to some of the master builder's I see on here, but everything straight. Anyone looking here, that has not built the elevator's, these have been put together with aileron stock, 1.25". Front cut off, back cut off, then sectioned in piece's, giving me a straight correct size for fit to stab, and TE perfect. After filler where needed, glassed, will look like any other crafted piece. More later, hope to continue here, and will look for a paint scheme to copy. Brought an old picture along,f this project fuselage, you can see the wing halve's are finished, waiting for glass.

I have learned a lot from current builder's here, especially Klxmaster and someone else, advising on the paper towel method when glassing, best suggestion I have seen is some time, very good, save's a lot of work. P-6 just given away, attached. More Phoenix' acquired, 6's, 7 & 8, all kit's.

Hey Crank,

Did you give your friend the one with the Nova Rossi in it ? If so, how did he like the power of the motor?

David. He has an OS61 SF ABC in it. The Rossi has been traded. Looking for a new paint scheme. Take a look at the fuselage included in picture here. Look like a Curare? Few guy's telling me it is an Arrow. Tipo wing fit's perfect in the saddle. HobbyPoxy paint, need's some touch up, and re-paint. I will follow the same color's, Rom-Air's.

Vince,

yup - definitely not close to a Curare. The fuse top is nothing like it nor is the fin. It is also definitely not an Arrow but it has "Arrowesque" overtones

I'm thinking it might be something older yet from the mid 70's and it resembles more the lines of Matt's Arrow predecessor the Atlas. Thing is both those models didn't have razorback fuse tops while this one does. The Curare had a different look yet and for a Curare it would be rather odd for it not to have clipped elevator/aileron (well, there is no wing) tips - a Curare signature if you ask me.

It doesn't surprise me that a Tipo wing fits it. The airfoils in those days were all rather similar and standard 60 size models often had similar wing root chords.

Man, that stab is also awfully high in the fuse!

Do you have an Atlas plan?

David.

P.S. I see that you won't be running out of Sorghum any time soon.

David, Mike - Yes, I am inspired again also. Mike, I still have not maidened the new Focus Sport. I put the new fuel system that is on the 115 and the 70, on this 110, the regulator off the front, should maiden soon. I re-joined the club locally that has a grass field and plenty of space, that mean's the Focus will be on it. I have a new FS ARF with the graphic's also. Is your P-5 the Wing kit ? Here is a few picture's of Tom Scott's P-5, you may have seen them.

David, I agree on the wing saddle. I have an extra set of P-6 wing core's here, maybe just build a straight wing out of it, carve a pan. Good suggestion, cousin to the Curare. No Atlas plan, I think Mike Williams is flying an Atlas, I will send him a picture.

Vince,

Good to hear that you will get going with the FS off grass. Finally will have a proline competition radio, it is being converted to 2.4 and will have a TM8 futaba TX module so it is compatible with what I flying presently.

Rain here, head to the shop. I haven't looked at the first P-6 build thread, this may be repeating myself with picture's, etc. I could bring the picture's up, but the date's will be wrong. Sheeted stab core's, now trimming LE, TE, and ready to set tip's. 1/16's ply sandwiched on tip's, make's for perfect sanding edge. Lining up, LE at center's, LE of elevator's has to be on center of stab TE. All elementary. LE of stab is 1/2" stock, you can see the blue tape, I will take it down to tape line, on front. Final after sanding, etc., pin stab at TE, to level, elevator up against this, tip TE after sanding, on even plain to elevator's, check spacing at LE, both side's, all should match up.
Do the other side, sand all to finish, glass, put L&R together, spar set up here, cut out fuselage. The wing halve's have to be set up, bolted down, etc. This is how I line up the stab. Yes, a straight line piece can set in the saddle, but you have to measure a 1000 different way's and time's, to make sure all is even, stab tip to wing tip, all location's at these area's, back & forth, back & forth, 1/8" off could be OK, I try to get it all perfect as I can, so I can sleep at night.

Finished stab on P-6 shown here. That P-6 has history, painted by famous pattern flyer, initial's, DB. Attached is goal for this area, will change color's this time.

Stab & elevator's finished, waiting for glass and horn's. I will embed the horn's as last P-6 thread. Pulled the wing halve's down, out of shell's, set on table. This table for trial fit's only, I will transfer to wood hard surface squared off and level for joining wing. Block's are 1", which will go under each tip when joining. Center section will be joined with 30 minute epoxy, and ply piece's in photo. Best to dimple or run a woodpecker each side of the ply piece's, the tiny indention's build tiny epoxy bridge's inside, core's to plywood.
Little time in shop, should be getting in here more now, finishing up the ranch project's, and some "honey-dew's".
I am anxious to get this P-6 finished, going to use different color's and color scheme, maybe something like the attached P-8, someone's from out west. Once I get into this more, everything else put on hold, morning to night till finished.
Also included, picture showing the 6 - 7 & 8, right to left, I could have put a 5 in there.

Not a bump here. Be back when finished, most of this is the same as the first P-6 thread. Wing is joined, ready to glass center section, set in, align wing bolt's, square wing on fuselage. Stab and elevator's ready for glass, will mount stab soon as wing mounted, then align stab to wing, set in, massage complete airframe, ready for primer. Tank floor, engine set-up already finished. I tweaked the nose to fit 2.25" spinner, OS 61SF.
I will keep posting, just the good progress stuff.

Great stuff Vince! I am awaiting a P-8 fuse from Don in CA. I'll be "borrowing" some of your ideas for mine, since I haven't built a pattern ship in over 25 years.

Tri-Power - I keep admiring your Poncho. Back in the day, Pontiac's were called Poncho's, and also, Goat's. No pun intended, a "Goat" was to be respected, you never knew what he was running under the hood. You can go back to the other Phoenix 6 build thread, get a lot from it. Just source, Crankpin, Finish the Phoenix Paint. More later, I'll keep posting, more as I get along. Small building project coming up.

Great to see you are still at it Vince. My Proline Comp radio is near completion; it will use the TM8 TX module from Futaba for 2.4 GHZ and utilize eight channels. Working on the P6. The gang over here is talking about making the Auburn, AL Classic pattern event coming up. Meanwhile stripping and repainting an MKAurora for John F.

Regards,

I was catching up on this thread and saw that beautifull paint job and knew immediately it was Tom Scott's.

He paints his Quarter 40 racing airplanes in a very similar color scheme. I am always amazed at the time, effort, and the amount of color he incorporates into his paint jobs and how well they look, and cringe on the days he looses one to a midair or crash.
