RE: MK Wild Beat
David,
I've been keeping an eye on your build. Great job!! I guess you decided on built up wings instead of foam?
I'm looking forward to more photos.
Keep up the good work!
Charles

Hey Charles, good to hear from you. This is a actual MK kit. I think all MK kits are built up wings. Speaking of wings, I'm about ready to start some wing work on the WB.
Don, it looks like I owe you some MK model numbers.

Charles, I will need you do do my graphics work for this plane sometime in the future. Your suggestions are welcome. The graphics you did for my Blue Angel were perfectly done. The Yoshioka font there was impossible for other graphics makers to match.

Don, I don't have any graphics planned yet. Charles cut my Blue Angel graphics and did a very good job. Several people tried to imitate the Yoshioka font and failed. Charles had it nailed in one evening. I assume they are vinyl. My guess is I will do the plane name, some stars and maybe the MK logo.
Do you have any ideas yet?

Oh, I was wondering which graphics those were ? Are they the MK logo? The reason I ask is that is that I do alot of custom car and mototcycle painting at my motorcycle business and I have a 36' plotter /cutter that we make graphics, signs, paint masks and so on. I was wantiing to see if I had those fonts you were referring to. I have over 10,000 different ones. No biggy, just piddling around and thought that I would check it out. Later

Since I'm at a standstill on the BA I decided to do a little WB work. I got the 2 wings halves glued together. I used the white Gorilla glue, which I am getting to like a lot. No need for it in most places but it seemed a good place to use it here.
More to follow today.
Looks like no photo uploads right now. Maybe later.....

Here's the servos I will be using for the ailerons. They are S9150's. I grabbed these a couple of black fridays ago for $20 apiece. I like the way they are shaped for wing/aileron use.

Nice servos David!
Say, how does MK go about building the wing given that the ribs are symmetric and taper uniformly from root to tip? There must be some technique they recommend in order to keep all the rib center-lines on the same plane. Do they just use shims under the wing bottom spar? The ribs don't appear drilled for a jig nor do they look like they had breakaway tabs.
David.

Not all MK kits were produced with built-up (all wood wings): the Blue Angel VR-7, Topstar, Topstar II and the Topstar 110 all came with pre-sheeted foam wings and stab (very nice, I might add). The Topstar 110 was available with either all wood horizontal surfaces or pre-sheeted foam horizontal surfaces. I have an all wood Topstar 110 kit, but it doesn't look like I'll ever get the pre-sheeted foam version.
By the way, great build thread and excellent work so far... looking forward to the flight report

David, if I remember correctly I penciled a sloped lines down a 2" pieces of aluminum angle stock. the angle stock was my straight edge perimeter around the wing. I kept the leading and trailing edges clamped to the lines.

I am setting up the aileron servo boxes by taping below the wing skin before they're glued. Since the servos are surface mounted I will cut away the balsa skin just where the servos fit and replace with ply. That should give me something solid to mount the servos to after i finish the plane.
The wing skins are a pleasure. already cut to fit and they fit perfectly. just a matter of gluing them on which I am doing now......

Third photo. please explain that gap?

Charles, the wing sheets would be too wide to fit in the kit box if the 2 pieces were one piece.

I'm thinking about using 3" heavy duty cardboard tubing for retract wheel wells. It's fairly lite, so far .80 of an ounce each but i will have to glass the insides. I also found a tube of some sort at Mcmaster Carr that i will use for the strut paths. It also is very light. At least I have a plan though.
