Seeing Quique in the photo reminded me of an even younger Quique at the 79 Worlds in South Africa in which I participated. Check out photo of Quique at 12...his first Worlds I believe. Also the young guys of team USA. Ah those were the days!

Other choices are the Dalotel, Bridi Hobby/Great Planes offered a Hanno Prettner version (SEE PHOTO) or the MK Akromaster and many more.

I will personally have the MAN Akromaster, the Bridi Dalotel which I received the original Great Planes Demo model and extra kit from my pal Don Anderson and I just acquired a Yellow Aircraft Cap 10B kit.

Make plans to attend, build an airplane!

Rusty,

what's the span of the Bridi Dalotel - 84"? Sounds huge for a 91. What's the airframe weight? I'd be interested in a couple of snaps of the plans if possible - just to get an idea.

Nice Cap. I've been thinking about the 231 as well as the Dalotel - both probably at 6' span.

David.

The guy next to him (#58) is Edgardo Catalano of Spain. He's the one who sent me the photo. We worked together at my previous job in NJ. He's the guy who really got me flying well.

Chicago Classic Pattern Championships...May 2010!

What planes will be eligible?

Short answer: Any R/C model airplane designed prior to 1988 (weighing less than 11 pounds) will be allowed to compete. Purpose built "pattern" airplanes flown by the best pilots will more than likely earn the highest scores. This event is about FUN. Fun does not require a special airplane!

What about "modified" classic pattern airplanes?

Short Answer: Yes, ANY SPA eligible airplane may be entered in the SPA/BPA classes. See attached photo of original Intruder vs. the very fine World Models Intruder.

What engines will be eligible?

Short Answer: Any GLOW or ELECTRIC power source will be allowed.

What about retracts?

Short Answer? Retracts are cool! Any model with or without retracts may be entered in any of the (4) classes. The airplane must take-off from the ground (no hand launching).

How can the contest possibly have enough time to have (4) classes fly many rounds in only one day?

Short Answer: We will need to have (2) airplanes in the air, (2) in the ready box and (2) on deck to even have a chance! Sportsmanship and courtesy are hallmarks of the classic pattern crowd so everyone, especially those who have never or who have not flown in a contest for a long time. This is all about fun.

Rusty, how will everyone be able to borrow your cool airplanes?

Short Answer: The World Models Intruder should be the most popular model for the SPA classes. The more esotheric models will also be popular and assuming they are "reliable" can be shared. I assume that the "borrowers" will assist in fueling, battery supervision...I strongly encourage potential borrowers to attend the Friday practice. Futaba computer radios will "drive" all of the models and custom set-ups may be programmed and saved. If you fly a 14MZ or 8FG, I can down load the programs to your transmitter. No charge or fuel costs!!!

How to advance register or advance reserve a model?

E-mail, call, write a letter, call me...

Chicago Classic Pattern Championships...May 2010!

"Classic TOC Class" Demo Flight/s?

My plan/goal/dream is to have at least (2) 1978/1980 TOC models make demo flights including the MAN Akromaster ("E" and/or glow) and the Bridi Dalotel which is the 1980 Prettner model with a Webra 1.20. Just because I am a "Ham" would like to fly one of the sequences and assuming Mark Radcliff (tentative), Mike McConnville (committed), Jason Shulman (available), Bill Cunningham (gotta give him the Blue Angel!), Frank Noll- all could potentially attend and do a much better job of drawing pretty lines with the models.

The first "Classic TOC Class" event will be in 2011 in Chicago. (Ha! I must prove to the fine FVAC cClub the value and merits of closing the field down for a weekend). There is a new field in Champaign which could also potentially host the event...maybe MM, JR or PG could be the CD?

Volunteers/Spectators Wanted!

Jon, love to have you! It can be lots of fun volunteering at an event.

Rusty,
If all goes as planned I will be at your event. I will have at least one Phoenix I flew at the Worlds and I am doing a little "restoration" work on the Kraft Super Fli I flew at the 1978 TOC. I hope to be able to fly it in your 78 T.O.C. re-creation event. Hopefully, if all goes well we will be flying at you event.

Mark,
Sweet Kraft Super Fli, I had forgotten about this one! I don't know why because Phil Kraft was "The Man" forever breaking new ground in RC and business he's a subject unto itself. I never had a chance to meet him, but I did have Krafts support as a sponsor in the mid 70's (76 Signature Series Radio) . Looking forward to seeing both of your planes and you. I will have my Phoenix 7 that I flew back in the 70's and thanks to Rusty I will have a Spinks Akromaster built from the short kits he's providing.

Ron,
Phil was one of my heros growing up. My dad and I built a Quick Fli III Top Flite kit in the late 60's and powered it with an Enya 60...just like his world championship model. Unfortunately it only lasted 6 flights when I was doing 3 rolls and the aileron servo stuck and it kept rolling into the ground! My dad and I watched him fly in the 71 Worlds in Doylestown PA. He finished 3rd and I told my dad that one day I would be on the US team. In 1975 I placed third at the Masters and was on the team. It was like a dream that I had competed aginst Phil and actually beaten him (Phil was 5th). In 2009 I flew as a tribute to Phil a Graupner Kwick Fli III at the VR/CS in Muncie and won class III flying the manouvers that Phil would have flown when he won the worlds in Corscia France. Kraft sponsored me in the late 70's and early 80's until I retired from competition. Another great memory was visiting Phil at his business in 1975 in Vista, CA where he took me for an aerobatic ride in his Pitts S2. He was a great man and a wounderful asset to our hobby. No one will ever replace him. Below are a few pictures of those memories.

WoW Mark, great stuff, man just to get a ride in a Pitts in those days would make me smile for days, but with Phil Kraft no less! Phil was generous and quite a nice person.

With so much interest in the 78 TOC event I got into my archives and pulled out this photo. It shows the TOC pit area/flightline. I am walking towards my Super Fli (skinny & hair). Next to me is Ron Chidgey. Really neat to see all the Zlin's, Ackromasters, etc. Standing at the top right on the tarmic is the event promoter Mr. Bill Bennett, then owner of the Circus Circus hotel/casino and sponser of the event. His idea of this event changed RC aerobatics forever. His death a few years ago was another loss to model avaiation however his influence will never be forgotten.

Mark,

just wonderful recollections and photos! Any '78 and '80 TOC documentation is a real inspiration to us "kids". Please do post more.

At the time I was 11 and building my second ever RC model; a 1/2A Pietenpol! Don't ask...

Rusty,

I actually live in Maryland, and Mike Wingo is from Birmingham, AL. I may have run into a snag. That is my step daughters Jr. high graduation weekend, so it doesn't look good at this moment.

Rusty, man count me in too please. I'm just minutes from the FVAC and should have either my 30 year old Tiger Tail or the new TT III ready to go. I might even conjure up a blue van to drive just to wig out Tim R. Counting down the weekends.
