RE: Mach 1 Build
Little do they know... Our elbows sure do!
I actually hadn't realized your M1 had an FSR in it - just peeked. I saw Jeff's in the photos above and liked the look, design and vintage of the engine. Evidently quite appropriate back in the day!
David.

RE: Mach 1 Build
I've always thought the Mach 1 was a very cool looking airplane! Maybe someday I'll get around to building one! In the mean time I'll be following this thread. How is it coming along AllTheGoodNamesAreTaken?

RE: Mach 1 Build
I had at one time two of the OS 61 Gold Head SFRs. One on my Mach I and the other was on my FAI Pylon to pattern conversion P 51. I bought the plans for the 51 from RC Modeler and and a box of balsa and built it full scratch. I placed the gold head in it and turned it into conventional gear retracts. I had a lot more time long ago. Coming out of a Split S at full throttle and pulling out at the last moment to about 5 feet above the runway, the plane looked real. The P 51 was an absolute blast to fly one of the magazines printed some information on the plane, but the Mach I did the pattern much better and was easier to fly. I have a photo of the P 51 if anyone is interested in seeing it somewhere around here. I wish I still had the plane as I lost it in a midair at the Winter Nationals held back in Tucson, AZ back in 73.

RE: Mach 1 Build
I put the Mach 1 aside for a while. I wanted to finish up the Dirty Birdy and fly it before spending too much time on the Mach 1. After getting the DB up and flying, I somehow ended up building a Sig Komet. [&:] I'm not sure how that happened. The Komet went together fairly quickly, and being covered in Monokote, it only took 3-4 days to cover it, vs 3-4 weeks for paint. []
The Mach 1 fuse is mostly together and rough sanded to shape. I've started cutting out the wheel wells and retract plate areas in the foam wing. I guess it's time to put it back on the bench.

Loosing the Sun Fli has me a bit down in the dumps and in need of another classic pattern project. Looking at my (small) hoard of classic pattern kits trying to decide what to assemble next, I found my Mach 1, staring at me like a neglected dog.
Time to knock the cob-webs off this build and get at it. The Jett .60L is already in hand. Mechanicals will be used again, but this time, I think I'll use a separate servo for the nose gear. Been there, done that on the single servo - never again.

Jeff, did the mechanicals from the Sun Fli survive?

RE: Mach 1 Build
I was running Hitec 5245 Digital Mini's with metal gears on the Sun Fli. I forgot to loctite the servo arm screw and aparently it vibrated loose. Lost elevator... Went in dead-stick from about 100 ft up.
The cheap Hobico mechanicals did not survive.
Right now the wing is sticking out of the trash can like a tombstone.
I never started a Banshee....
You WILL see a M1-Jett .60 on the flight line next spring. Atlanta? maybe... I'd like to find a NIB YS 60RE for that. I've got a few kits on the shelf to think about during the M1 build:
Phoenix 6
Atlas
Arrow
Dirty Birdy
Tiporare
Calypso
and about 20 non-pattern kits too.

RE: Mach 1 Build
Hi Jeff,
It'll be good to see your Mach 1 going forward.
I just picked up my Atlanta from Don's (Frequent Flyer) last night. What a cool model, even cooler than in the pictures. I'm going to use a YS long stroke and go for that quiet, hide everything inside, big pitch prop period.
Chris...

RE: Mach 1 Build
Jeff,
in that case I think you should consider the following for the SE YS60:
Atlas (side mount)
Tiporare (side mount)
Dirty Birdy (vertical mount)
The Atlanta, Arrow and Calypso all deserve RE engines...[8D] The P6 an older American engine - perhaps a Kraft.
Isn't that nice when fellow modelers take care of your build and gear plans...?
David.

You have some sweet planes on the build docket there Jeff!
Personally, I am jazzed about my Escape, but the Mach 1 will be cool to see...
I am also interested in the performance of the Jet BSE RE engine. Anxious to see the actual numbers. I would use one on one of my future Escape options...
Eager to see the progress!
Brian

Thanks David. Now finish connecting the dots to the .60's I own:
Rear Exhaust:
OS .61 VF-R
YS .61 AR (on loan in the Summit 3)
YS .61 RE
Side Exhaust:
YS .61 SE (needs a con-rod)
YS .60 SE (from the deceased Sun Fli)
Jett Sport .60
Jett BSE .60L
OS .61 SF-P, SF ABC and SF Ring
OS FG-R - I'd like to put that in a Kwik Fly someday.
ST .61X SE
ST G60 Bluehead
HP .61 Goldhead

RE: Mach 1 Build
This thread goes back a while, very informative. You guys may have an answer for me. Kraft had one of his "FLI" series, tapered wing, crutch fuselage, I think this means turtle deck.
Canopy back built up. Was this the Sun-Fli ? I built some Kwik Fli III's back in the day, think I remember this plane on one of the RC mag cover's. From what I remember, it was built up with stringer's from the back of canopy, flowing right into the fin. Any help appreciated, I would like to put one of these together, as I am wanting to build something made out of "all wood", for a change.
Vince

RE: Mach 1 Build
Jeff,
here you go!
David.
Rear Exhaust:
OS .61 VF-R (Arrow - upright) - does this one have a RI carb, i.e. ducted fan type engine? MK or glass fuse?
YS .61 AR (Atlanta - inverted)
YS .61 RE (Calypso - inverted)
Side Exhaust:
YS .60 SE (from the deceased Sun Fli) (Tiporare)
Jett BSE .60L (Mach 1)
OS .61 SF ABC (Dirty Birdy)
OS FG-R (Kwik Fly)
ST .61X SE (Atlas)
ST G60 Bluehead (For your boy. If you don't have one, make one... )
HP .61 Goldhead (Phoenix 6)
Hey, what happened to the Rossi 60? That's the one that's supposed to go in the Arrow! [X(]

RE: Mach 1 Build
Nice. :-)
Now what order should I build them? What do you want to see after the Mach1?
The VF is the standard FIRE. The Arrow is an MK kit, the rest are glass/foam, except the Calypso of course.
In a brief period of poor judgment, I sold the Rossi. It was a side exhaust and not really appropriate for the Arrow. I did just pick up a Moki FIRE from the classifieds. Never ran one of those.
