Default Mach 1 Build

The Mach 1 has to be my favorite RC plane of all time even lthough I've never owned or built one. I do have fond memories of seeing a couple while flying at Mile Square Park in Southern California.
I've always wanted to build one and I've watched a few auctions of the Midwest kit version but never bought one.
The Eureka Aircraft "short kit" availability of the Mach 1 (and quite a few other classic pattern planes) has me itching to construct my very own Mach 1. I ordered the short kit (Wing and Stab cores, bulkheads and other shaped pieces and clear canopy) along with the Plans from Model Airplane News Plans service. (Plan #X06733)
I also placed an order for some balsa (wing skin planks, various sticks and blocks, etc) from Lone Star Balsa.
The plane will be finished in glass and Klass Kote epoxy paint.
Engine will be an AXE Rossi with pipe – and possibly a pump.
Tricycle gear with Hobbico mechanicals will also be used.

Stay tuned, more to come.

Sad thing is that my Mach 1 had retracts and when they were up the plane could really fly, and now that SPA won't let you use them if you compete with it, your going to have to learn to fly it dirty. Super plane wish I still had mine.

I received my order from Lone Star. Now I have all the wood I need to get started.

I drew out the retract and wheel well locations on the cores. I had Eureka leave the trailing edges on the cores so the ailerons will sheeted and cut out.

Next step will be cutting out the retract and wheel wells before making the skins. I'll be using a single aileron servo with torque rods.

Hi,

I have also a Eureka Mach 1 short kit.
I had a Mach 1 back in 1975-1976 with Rossi 60 FI RC ABC side exhaust with pipe (later changed to a Rossi 61 FI RC ABC rear exhaust with pipe going trough the canopy). I had Carl Goldberg retracts. Radio was EK Logictrol super pro 7 ch (I still have the radio).
Mach 1 was my first "real" pattern plane and I flew it many many hundred flights, mostly from grass fields.
It is a real ballistic pattern plane with a Rossi 60/61 with pipe.
Here is a picture of my old Mach 1.

Check it out. This is my Mach 1 from back in 1973. The best flying plane I've ever had.

I had one like the red Mach One same basic paint shceme and I just love that plane. Your red one was really nice Lazer. I had a Kwik Fli, a Dirty Birdy and
a Phoenix 5 and a Super Kaos too but the Mach One was my all time favorite. I have a Midwest kit untouched but the Eureka kit is very tempting too. Seem
like my Mach One weighed in at almost 8 pounds but man that thing was smooooth . .....Oh well as I remember it anyways lol.

Thanks a bunch! If you think that you may want to sell your Mach 1 kit please let me know. I don't know when I'll get to build it if I were to have it, but I'm sure I could find time. One more time before I die I'm sure. Thanks again.

I'm off to a slow start, but a start none the less. Tonight I got started on the fuse. This is one of the more difficult fuse's that I've put together. Not that is complicated, just that the design doesn't lend itself to ease of alignment during assembly.
The fuse is built up-side down. The front half (forward of the wing) is built separate. The sides of the fuse are slightly rounded, so bending the fuse sides and keeping the front half in line was a royal pain. I'm almost shocked that I didn't build in some twist or bow.
Next step is to attach some balsa 2x4's and carve out the rest of the fuse. Building a box and slightly rounding the sides wold have been a lot easier. I mean you're going to shape the top and bottom blocks anyway....but I digress...

I'm sorry for being ignorant, but what famous auction site are you referring? The one with the E at the front and y at the end?

No reason to respond to first question. I see it! That guy is sure proud of that kit!! To steep for my blood. I have the capability and shop to buy the plans and box of wood and build another one like I had before for a whole lot less. Thanks for notifying of that kit.

Stumbling block #1.
It looks like the Rossi isn't going to work with out extending the nose. The plan shows 3 3/4" from the front of the firewall to the front of the nose ring. The Rossi is 3 7/8" from the drive washer to the rear case cover screws. Add a nylon mount and we're looking at a 4 1/4" long engine. I'd have to add 1/2" to the nose at least, to get the Rossi to fit.
Other engines that I've considered using are the OS FSR, SF, and HB PDP are all too long as well. Seems the Super Tigre Blue head shown on the plans is quite compact.

So, do the purists agree that the nose should be elongated to accomodate the engine?

After a quick look at your situation here is what I would do. Add the length to the nose. The power of the Rossi is more important than satisfying the purest. I remember having to add extra weight to my Mach 1 due to the long and heavy tail of which I would go extra steps to lighten. Bear in mind that I painted my plane and if you try and lighten the tail area and want to paint you'll need to cover the holes with a very thin sheet of balsa. I know that this will create a lot more work and may seem like your not removing very much material, but remember that the moment of length from the CG is long an even a small amount of weight will multiply in force. If your covering the plane then don't fill the rear lightening holes. My personal preference is to paint the plane as it will look soooooooooo much better, and stand out from the rest. I used K& B Epoxy paint on mine and man that paint is tough.

My next area for head scratching will be the "cowling". Because the engine is so large, there will be very little balsa surrounding the engine. It's going to be difficult to build up/ carve out the nose section. I'm tossing around the idea of making a glass cowling instead of carving one out of balsa, but have it fixed to the plane - not have it removable.

I've come across this situation before, what I did was to move the firewall back and leave the nose ring where it is. By adding to the length of the nose, you change the "moments" of the design. The flight characteristics will be somewhat altered from the original design. Yes, I know this will change the tank and nose gear locations slightly, but for me, keeping the nose the original length is the most important feature to keep.

This happened to me when I built my Atlas, although being a fiberglass fuse, I had no choice but to move the firewall. All in all, it was worth the effort.

Just my 2 cents.

Mach 1...cowls with balsa!

Fine work Allthegoodnamesaretaken...

The following photos have been posted in other threads but here they are again. Dirty Birdy and Deception. The Dirty Birdy has the large mixture carb on a Webra Speed and the Deception has the OPS which is about the same size as the Rossi.

Moving the nose ring 3/8" - 1/2" would be just fine. Going to a 1/4" larger spinner also simplifies the length and size challenges.

Jeff,

that Gold Head FSR sure looks sweet - very classic!

I'd keep the Rossi for a bigger beast. The M1 is a slick rocket as it is and the FSR strikes me as more original. Put the Rossi in a European design... [8D]

Another 2c.

David.

Thanks for the flowers about my Mach 1 with the Gold Head O.S. .61 FSR I use to have. Actually what your seeing is the maiden flight day for the plane. I later painted the vertical stab with flat black paint and added my AMA numbers to finish it out. I'm finding out now that the K&B Epoxy paint is hard to find. You know what really use to bother me when I had this plane was people would come up and say that I had a nice plastic plane there, not knowing how many hours I filled and wet sanded that plane. I would just look at them and shake my head.
