There was a review by Model Builder sometime '92 or '93, an EZ Mystic 30 ARF. As far as I can recall, it was powered by a Magnum 36 engine, and could go straight up vertical, when released by a helper.

Well how about its big brother, the Mystic 90ARF?

Hi Ray,
Great Photos of Hanno. Did he ever compete with either design in Europe? Was either design published or kitted? I would love to know how the 2meter Extra flew with the reduction geared Hanno Special - I wonder how that would have impacted 2m powerplants had Hanno flown with that in a WC. That era certainly spawned renewed interest in scaled down aerobatic planes (MK's FAI aerobatic series from the mid '80s would be the first). In addition to Hanno, Quique designed a 2m Extra which was kitted by MK and Dick Hanson kitted his Excess design which was essentially an Extra 300 as well. Quique also designed the Desafio 2000 which looked like a stretched Sukhoi; Sebastiani Silvestri flew his version of the Katana S and CPLR produced the Caprise which was his interpretation of the CAP (not sure which one).
I really loved your comment about the Super Sicroly MK25, but I've heard other (non pattern flying) R/Cers make the same comment.

Here's Hanno's Sensation. These photos appeared in the February, 2001 issue of a Japanese R/C magazine. Yoshioka kitted several sizes of the Sensation. I'm still looking for a kit (preferably the Sensation RS).

I was a little too bold on my last comment there... probably a late evening reaction to "unsatisfactory ARF's" for my taste. I'll reserve further judgment on the subject.

Ferio,

it would be interesting to read that article, especially if it appeared in MB! Anyone have a copy of that?

Also, I was aware of a 120 kit as I've come across a few photos of them but I didn't know there was an EZ 90 ARF. Anyone have any info on that? I'd be curious to compare specs as I'll probably scale up my 30 size CAD plan when I get to it.

I re-located John Wold's brief history on Hanno and his models. The Mystic "era" (Mystic 60, 120 & BGX) appears on page 2 of 3 of this summary. Here's the first page (follow links for the next two):

http://www.aerowold.com/2007/hannos-big-planes-part-1/

Interestingly, OS still manufactures the BGX although probably not very favored in today's ample 30-40cc gas engine availability:

Hi all,

Here's another EZ kit to add to the forum. This one dates back to 1992, designed by the famous F3a Aerobatic World Champ, Hanno Prettner.

Initialy it's designed to take 45 2 stroke / 90 four strokes. Compaired by todays 90 sized airframes, the Mystic is smaller than one would expect, spanning 61". However, it is a perfect size for a YS 63FZ and a long tuned pipe.

The construction is like any other EZ kit, balsa airframe, 1/8" moulded depron, except this model has a much tougher skin, making it less prone to dings.

UM,

there she is! Now I understand - it is a 45 size model. I forget that EZ/OK used to classify model sizes by their 4s requirements.

Any chance of some larger shots of the kit? These are thumbnails.

David.

The point of an arf is to get a good flying, good looking airplane with little to no assembly. I don't build myself so its either an arf or hire someone to build one. Obviously due to the huge number of arfs out there today I am not alone in my thinking. Compared to other arfs in the day, EZ's were high quality, looked great, and flew great!

Great shots guys!

Would that be Mr. and Mrs. Prettner Ray...?

Consider this though: EZ and or OK (this is where it gets confusing) decided to have them pose with a Mystic 30 and 90 but in reality that is probably a 30 & 45! Or... if following EZ convention M45 and M90. I definitely don't think those are .30 and .90 2s size models (at least they don't look like it). Unless OK also kitted a 90 2s as well as the 120 4s!

Mike,

is that a dark forest green or black on the underside of the M90?

Absolutely - just my little joke Her name is Crystal and here they are with another of Hanno's demo models from 1996.

As to the designations - I just go by the names on the wings

The EZ Mystic 90 was dark green underside.

Fellow Mystic 30 fans,

thought some of you might be interested in the following. Unsatisfied with the quality of the plastic ABS cowls that come with some of the OK Model Prettner kits - the Mystic 30 in this case - I decided that a mold was in order to produce some made of glass. I assembled the original ABS cowl reinforcing it with glass and CF on the inside and sent this to Don who produced the mold (shown in red).

Among other things, Don is also able to produce custom headers (photos show one for a 160 FX - same concept). I decided to use an OS 32 SX SE engine mounted inverted in my model which requires a "swan neck" type header to direct the exhaust down the center-line of the fuse bottom. In due course, a laser kit of this model will also be produced but if anyone has an interest at this point in time in either a custom header or a cowl, please drop me a line (email or PM via RCU) asap.

With the help of another kind RCU member, I have also been able to source an original Hatori 300 pipe which is intended for the Mystic 30 (and several other 25 size designs). Again, if anyone has a need or desire for such a pipe, also let me know as a few more may be available but are probably rather scarce.

David.

Default RE: Mystic 30

Well, Mystic fans, I've finally made some progress on the plans. But this is the easy part by all accounts. The hard and time consuming part is getting it all to fit properly and this design has some complex formers (its interlocking) and a fuse which I strongly feel needs to be simplified and designed to be more versatile for today's different power plants (2 cycle 28-35, 4 cycle 48-53 or 600-750W of e-power).

While the original design works with the one piece wing for glow applications, the electric version really calls for a removable canopy section and plug-in wings - which is not that hard to do. However, I'm still on the bridge as to whether to make a single design for glow or e-power or keep the original for g-power and make a modified one for e-power. I personally like the concept of a plug-in wing with a large radio area and removable canopy hatch but it does make for a more expensive model since a carbon (or aluminum I suppose) tube becomes a necessity.

I've mostly finished the frame up of a 2-cycle and pipe glow version and will see how the conversion of the second one goes for e-power. Perhaps finishing that build will help to assess what approach might be best. And by the way, the fuse side view already includes some minor modifications in the wing section area - basically it now stands at a bit of a hybrid not having decided which way to take the fuse design yet.

Anyhow, I thought some of you might like to see the progress on this model. It actually would make for a pretty good Mystic 60 as designed (it is over built for a 30) with appropriate modifications to the tail for the airfoiled stabilizer which is situated closer to the wing. Vertical and rudder shape is also slightly different as is location of canopy (its further back). Pipe tunnel will also have to be longer for those OS Hanno brutes! [8D]
