Default MK KITS LISTING

Hello,

this is the pattern part of the list of models produced by MK.

It follows the [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9401552/tm.htm]ROYAL/MARUTAKA and MK List[/link] I put in the Scale section of RCU

Mr. Masahiro Kato was a top FAI pattern pilot who won many Japanese National championships.

As many high level modelers, he was designing and building his machines himself. After establishing his own company, named M. Kato Model Aircraft Manufacturing Co. Ltd, he began selling his MK kits. Parts were all first quality balsa, pre-cut and many already pre-formed. A very high level of quality was achieved, Mr. Kato being without any doubt a very perfectionnist man, how could he climb to the first place in his country otherwise?

His main products line consisted of high level aerobatic models but he also designed some scale warbird. These were soon handed over to Marutaka, so he could concentrate himself on Pattern flight, altough he continued to design and draw many scale models for Marutaka. His first scale model MK kits were diffused in very small numbers and they did certainly not bring him much money, considering the high level of craftmanship involved. I will try to establish a list of the now very scarse scale models kits and also give an outlook of his long list of stunt champions, designed by M. Kato or by some of his fellow competitors.

Hi CaptainBlueSky,
I have one addition to your list:
The Blue Angel Super VR-7 which immediately followed the Blue Angel VR-7. It is the 2-meter version of the Super VR-90 and differs from the VR-7 only in the fuselage which has the canopy moved a few inches back and more lateral area. Both of these kits were offered in 2 configurations: kit and pre-comp (MK's terminology) I'm not sure what the difference between the two versions is, but the retail price difference was 20,000 yen.
Don't forget about the Wild-7 90 and the Silent 90 & 50 as well as the Aurora 45 & 25, Joker 25, Mattlas, Magic 40, Curare 40 & 20, Cosmos 40 & 20, Arrow 40. Also, Matt's Granat was never kitted by MK (never flown in international competition, either).

Pre-comp = ARC

A great deal for a mere 20,000 yen more than the standard kit.

Will,

I should add - speculatively - that MK probably also kitted an Arrow 20 which has been rarely seen. However, I'm aware that Hatori produced an OS 25 VF header for it and unless there was a naming mistake it is likely that the kit also existed for some short period and perhaps only in Asia.

Willy, I have added Blue Angel Super VR-7 and Wild-7 90.

My intention was to post more size details when I will be including pictures coming from very interesting thread started by David ( Doxilia ) about his conservation project for those smaler versions, [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_8963192/tm.htm] An MK 20 Size Conservation Project[/link]
I will may be also get a copy of some old MK printed document he has, so I can crosscheck chronology and specs, mistakes will be corrected.

Once again, thank you for your precious help,

Al

Al,

the flyer I have basically shows photos of the models posted in the conservation thread. There are a few specs on the Aurora's (25, 45 and 60) but most everyone on the forum is well familiar with that info.

If you send me a PM with your email I can fire you the photos that I scanned and touched up from that flyer. The inside of the flyer has photos of MK's accessory products but I didn't bother scanning that.

Hi David,
MK did not kit an Arrow 20. There are some other 'gaps' in their kit production:
Skymaster 60, 20 no 40 size
Joker 60, 25 no 40 size

Conversely, MK catalogs list 20, 40, 60 and 4C sizes for both the Magic and Aurora; though I'm not sure what differentiates the 60 size from the 4C size (dimensionally they are the same).

MK also produced FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic) fuselages/kits for the Magic and possibly others (which were never imported here in the USA).

Will,

thanks for looking into that. The reason I speculated that an Arrow 20 existed (at least in Japan) was because Hatori actually produced a fuse top header for the 25 VF intended for the Arrow. I was surprised when I saw that and although I thought it was probably either a typing mistake or simply a way of naming a fuse top header for 20 size engines, I conceded to the possibility of a 20 size Arrow.

I considered that more likely when I realized that there isn't a single 20 size MK kit that I'm aware of that actually uses a fuse top header. The one exception would have been the Aurora with a pipe setup like in the 45 and 60 (albeit a cranked fuse top header) but as I understand it, they never provided the space or the belly pan for a RE pipe setup or engine configuration. The other exceptions would have been kits from OK Models such as the Mystic and Beat-On but both of these came much after the 25 VF and in any case would have been underpowered with a 25 - not a likely thing for Hatori to do.

In any event, it just seems fitting for an Arrow 20 to exist and be powered by a RE OS, Enya or Jett 25-35. In due course, I intend to produce a CAD plan of the Arrow 40 and scale this down with appropriate simplifications (MK 20 size style) to obtain a 20 size Arrow. This one will probably have specs similar to the Skymaster 20.

Actually with the recent movement of OK Models Hanno designed kits, the ambitious conservation project merits the consideration of 5 more models:
[ul][*] Calypso 25[*] Supra Fly 25[*] Supra Star 25[*] Mystic 30[*] Sensation 30
[/ul]
Together with the earlier MK Magic 20 and Curare 20 they would constitute about 20 years of Hanno's WC designs (although I understand he had retired from the circuit by the time the Sensation came around). Also, plans for the Calypso and Sensation apparently never existed (at least commercially). That will also change one day.

Don't know about the Magic, but in the case of the Aurora, the basic difference between the Aurora 60 and the Aurora 90 was that, in the 90 version, the firewall was moved rearwards to fit a 90 size four stroke motor instead of a 60 size two stroke.

Best regards,

Hi David,
Why don't you add the Super Sicroly and you'll have the complete collection of Prettner's designs (I think). I like a copy of the Sensation plans when you get to them...
Thanks,
Will

Will,

put like that it sounds pretty straight forward. The set will be ready by next week... maybe not.

In truth, I wish I could suspend work for a month, get down to some serious CAD and I'd probably have a good chunk of it done. However, as things stand, CAD comes as inspiration, time and energy are in synergy. Actually, I got a fair bit done over the winter but burned out a bit from double duty computer work. Now, I'm happy to spend some time in the shop flying dust.

But I agree, the Super Sicroly should be added since the Sensation is too. The only problem with these two designs is that I have very limited information on them. Certainly no plans to draw from.

I'll be happy to have a copy of the Sensation plans too when I get to them! [8D]

Hi David,
Not to mention actually building and flying...
MAN published plans for the Super Sicroly at one time. I thought somebody was producing a kit, too. Maybe Eureka??

Yes, look [link=http://www.eurekaaircraft.com/plan_kits/SS2.htm]here.[/link] Eureka give credit for the CAD plans to one of our very own esteemed forum members...

George,

good pointer! It just figures that David would have had a go at them. I'm sure they're impeccable.

But what about MAN 1974? Anyone?

Just a small correction. The Yoshioka/Blue Angel article is from AAM (American Aircraft Modeler) not MAN (Model Airplane News) - October 1974 issue.

Note the difference between the rudder in the 3 view (which, I believe, matches the MK kit) and the funky bulge that modified the lower part of the rudder in the photos.
