Hal DeBolt Interceptor MK 1

Looking for a copy of the Hal DeBolt plans to the "Interceptor MK-1"
that was featured in the MAN Jan 1964 issue, MAN no longer list
them.

Thanks,

Bill D.

Hi,

What colors was used on the orginal Interceptor Mk1 above?
Blue and white (I think I read somewhere)? If yes, dark blue or...and snow white or cream white or...?

Don't know but here's a shot of Pappy with a later(1965) version of the Interceptor, so perhaps red/white/blue were his "house" colors.

Bill,

After seeing a pic of the Interceptor Jr. in flight I had to have the plans for this. Used the article and made a set of plans with as accurate dimensions as possible.

I didn't like the way the plans where arranged so I modified, combined, separted, and hopefully made them easier to use.

I've got a set of plans of Intercepter MKI and maybe of the MKV. I do know that I have a set of the Jr. plans.

I've since been told that the Mk 1 & Mk 5 plans are available from
the AMA Plans Service.

Thanks to you all. The lines of this plane have drawn me to it like
a magnet, gotta build it..........

I agree, the lines are hypnotizing like a mach1. If i ever build one i'll paint it black.

Black with Cream, Red pinstriping & lettering would make a very attractive color combo.

I woke up this morning and believe it or not I had a dream about the Pappy Debolt Intercepter.

Back in the early 60's I had one. From What I remember it was a kit that I built it from. I painted it black with two white 1/2 inch stripes coming down the leading edge of the wing. I might have had a white stripe down the fuse also. For it's day I remember it looking like a real sleek airplane. I was living in Brooklyn NY at the time and can remember trying to fly it there.

Unfortunatly, I crashed it on my first flight. It was tail heavy and all I can remember is that it was uncontrollable and it did crash.

Funny how I can remember that airplane after all these years.

I would love to get a hold of a kit if there is still one and try again.

Hi,
Then You probably need to check often on ebay, here at RCUand other places - the chance that there is an unbuilt kit out there is probably microscopic but who knows. Strange none like Eureka Aircraft etc have made a short kit of this beautiful plane.

Bryan,

is this one of the results of direct scanning of the magazine? If so, they turned out just peachy!

For slightly more universality, I converted them to PDF which resulted in them also shedding about 50% of their data size (therefore, somewhat faster download). I know you're a die hard TIF guy, I guess I'm the die hard vector guy so here they are posted for others convenience if some prefer PDF. In order posted:

Nice model!

David,

Yes, I didscanthe mag. While thumbing throughit I saw the plan and just had to enlarge it.

I just finished scanning and enlarging the Feb 1986 RCM Super Chipmunk last week and added 4 inches to the tail moment,to stretch it out.The fuse is now 56' long instead of 52". I'll have to check and see if the CG has changed but I like it alot better as it now looks more like a Classic Pattern plane. This week I have been working on June 1976 Olympic II sailplane.

Man, I just love my RCM mags!!! Several of the mags I got have three or more planes with plans in each issue that I want to build. Will never get to them all, but it's nice to know that I have em.

I've pretty much got scanningplans from the mags down. I can enlarge just about any mag plan to full size as long as the original is in ok condition. I also happen to have a large stack of RCM mags that I've purchased overthe last few years. More than enough to keep me way past busy.

Hi,

I think I found now what color Hal DeBolt Interceptor Mk 1 had. Blue and white. I believe it is shown in Charles Winter updated DVD of Golden era pattern flying (2:10 - 3:00 in the video) - "Detroit Invitationals" 1963, -64, -65. Something like dark blue and white it seems to be in the video.
I'm not 100% sure it is Interceptor Mk 1 shown in the video but it is very similar. The white paint on the fuselage seems perhaps little broader in the video compared to the construction article that is why I hesitate.
Image below from a snapshoot from the video (could not grab any better quality then this).

David,

I just now reread the your post and missed this part.

I didlike both just as well only I can't edit a PDF if I want to change something on the plan, a select a portion of the plan to copy and paste, and finally PDF's don't import into Autocad at all. TIF files on the other hand work great for that. I can load a TIF file into Autocad with an Autodesk add on program called Autocad Raster Design. This program imports a TIF file at it's correct dimensions so I don't have to mess with resizing the picture to ge it's dimensions right. It the TIF is 36" x 72" that's just what I get when loaded into Autocad. It's a real time saver as I can goto tracing the plan right away in Autocad.

Since you have to pay for the new Adobe Reader, version 9 I believe, i am hesitant to use PDF's anymore. As a matter of fact, most of my recent business correspondance has been requested in MSWord format (8.doc).

Bo,

Nice paint scheme on the MK I. It looks like the nose portion is red. You you think it might have been three colors?

Hi Bryan,

I think it was only blue and white. No red color. When I watch the video It is shown better quality then the snapshoot I made and posted above and I can not see any other colors then blue and white in the video on this plane.

I contacted my laser cutter this morning, Eddie Taylor of Action
Hobbies & Lazer-Works, will be sending him the plans to have a
short kit or parts package cut, will be making just a few additions
to the plans, ie cut-off legs to help build a straight wing, and also
the addition of 2 small carbon fiber tubes for extra strength and
stiffness through the entire wing, running parallel to the front wing
spar. Then it's time to get this beauty built. Will more than likely
do a one-off lower engine cowl out of fiberglass.

I found what I was loking for, the Interceptor and Interceptor Five plans are avaible from AMA Plans Services. Thanks to everyone that put me on the right track. I love the old pattern airplanes and the Interceptor will be next as soon as I finish my Taurus.
