TT 40 Carb Question

Seems once a TT 40carb has been dis-assembled after a rebuild, I have an issue keeping a good seal on the fuel inlet nipple. Can the washers on either side be replaced with gasket material orO-rings? If not, does anyone have a source for replacement washers?

RE: TT 40 Carb Question

You have to get creative. I've had some success by just turning the the aluminum washers over. I've also made polyethelene washers from plastic lids like are found on cans of nuts. Whatever you do, don't end up with a thicker stack up of washers, because there isn't a lot of threads in the carburetor body for the spray bar to screw into. The carburetor body is soft aluminum, and the spray bar is steel, so it's fairly easy to strip the threads.

After your rebuild, be sure to pressure test your repair. Hook up a suringe to the spray bar nipple, close the needle valve completely, and apply pressure. Use fuel if you don't mind a mess, or use air, and put the whole assembly under water. The other alternative is to buy a spray bar assembly, which is the only way to get the washers! Good luck, Greg

RE: TT 40 Carb Question

What Greg said is one of the best ways of remedying the problem! Polypropylene is a very durable gasket if made right! If you can’t replace them with TT washers some of your hardware stores carry small aluminum washers. The ones I found were for pop-rivets I have also taken a 1/16” brass / copper sheet and punched out small slugs and then drill the hole in it making it the washer you need! It’s allot of work but it works well if you take the time to make them right! ;)
