Folks:

If you won a twenty thousand dollar shopping spree from your local hobby shop, (One of the rules is you have to spend 20K with no money left over) What would you get and why?

I would stock up very heavy on after market items as I have a lot of kits but would still buy one of each kit from Skyshark R/C and an engine for each along with retracts and whatever was needed to finish them. top radio gear even though I have good stuff and then I would just wing it till it was gone

Personally I'd go to the local Boys/Girls Club and see what kind of program they had for RC or Avaiaton. I'd then spend 80% of it on that, and get them into a real RC program.

Then I'd spend the next 5 years or so working it, having the time of my life getting kids into RC.

THATS money well spent. What in the heck do I need yet another 20K worth of RC stuff when I have virtually everything I want, nearly when I want it. RC isnt so cost prohibitive that I 'have to have it all'. My hobby shop is full of planes, cars, heli's and more.

Sure I'd buy me a cool radio, maybe a new plane... but really.. 20K is a LOT of money that can make a bunch of kids real happy, and then the industry as a whole wins.

(see how easy it is to give imaginary money away?)

Default oooooooooo-wee

Nice thought Nitro!

Unfortunately my first thought was a "couple" turbine jets....

I would rather start a martial arts/ Self-defense/awareness program for kids and set-up a sim. for the RC-

Giving back to the community....hmmm- sounds like a winner no matter how you cut-it!

Also, I live in Ramona (CA. for some of you..) and I would love to get an AMA approved airfield up here- that would cost 20K at least

i'd get the club a propper field with power, club hut, cricket pitch quality grass.
either that or all those useless toys that you would get if you had £50-100 to burn coz you know you'd only play with it for a week.
then i'd sell them on E-bay for twice what i paid

The LHS serving my area doesn't even have 2k worth of stuff I'd want. Heck I have a hard time spending 40 bucks because of all the "out of stock" items.

I would use the 20k towards buying the shop and fire everybody. Then I would hire people that understand the importance of good customer service and know that you can't sell stuff from an empty peg hook.

After I spent the winnings, I'd have a fund raiser for our club and get enough money to move our club from the leased property to something more permenant.

Why, I'd add $1000 to the pot, and spend as I normally do each year! (Don't tell the wife).

$20,000 of R/C Stuff......... Can't Process........ Going to shut down.......
Actually it would be nice to do something similar to what Nitro said, might even get the news crews out. I would get lots of balsa and lite ply sticked up, the best radios, great engines and still not know what to do with a heli.

Ha! How about that, my wife saw this thread and wanted half for her hobby, Go figure!

What hobby shop?

I'd spend it on field improvements. No question.

I just compared some 'birdseye' pics I shot of our flying field in July 2002 with the set I took just two weeks ago.

Last year:

This year:

Quite a difference.

The tiny white, red & yellow specks in front of the white containers on the RH side of the pic are BigD, rc_boy_12, an US 1.20 (RIP), a Pizazz, a Diabolic and a Raptor 30.

We're looking strongly at leasing the heavily vegetated fenced-in area that extends off the upper-right side of the picture as our future club field. Its at least twice the size of the area we fly from now, and almost completely flat...

I'm with the dude wanting a better transportation vehicle... My 91 lumina is getting tired of hauling my trailer I'd go for a used Chevy Avalanche!

If it really has to stay hobby related.. 2 fully loaded Fiberclassics Extra 300's with a DA motors, and an Aerojet Models 3d Edge 540 with a monster 3w motor, a turbine jet or 2, etc... Ooooh... also a Futaba 9z

I'd buy a 10 channel computer transmitter and turbine jets, so I can build a large jet plane.

I know....I would build a turbine jet plane too.

Yeah it has to be hobby related if I had won 20,000 tax free
I would probably do other things with it except R/C, but R/C would come a CLOSE second!!!

Guys, guys... whatever you do, don't buy yourself a stated of the art radio system...

By the time you are finished building all those planes you also bought your state of the art radio will be an ancient piece of equipment....

A 40% Edge 540 with the best equipment available including a new AIRTRONICS transmitter!

A van to carry it around...That allowed?

Maybe a couple spare 40%ers...

I need a better understanding of the question. I interpret it that you can only spend the $$$ at the shop that presented it to you is this correct?

If this be the case then fields and programs would not be an option.

As far as my local shop goes, depends on which one it was. Out of the three, the closest one is a Hobby Town USA, in which don't have much in the way of RC Planes, now if it be one of the other shops then I would have a blast.
