Do you own a tablet device?
I am doing a bit of research for a magazine considering publishing an interactive version for iPad and other tablets. Wondering whether our hobby is up to speed with this technology!

I personally do not see any value for a tablet if you own a laptop.

Ipad, Iphone & macbook pro. I work for an airline, & go through security everyday. It is priceless not having to take the Ipad out my bag everytime like my laptop. Because of that I've gotten use to my ipad, & honestly love my Macbook, but dont touch it much.

I don't believe it's a matter of being up to speed. That implies people in our hobby do not possess the ability to use them. Since you are posting in an internet forum, everyone that replies is "up to speed".
It's more about price and practicality. Do people need such a device in a tight economy where so many already have smart phones capable of doing much the same job but are smaller. Tablets are nice, indeed, but in actuality are not necessary, making them a luxury item instead of something required for efficient day to day activities.

NECESSITY? Ha! Is a turbine F-16 or a gasser Cub a necessity?

My hands and arms don't work well enough to carry a tablet or laptop around, and I do not do very well with touch screens.

As of this post, 56 of 95 respondents have one or want one. Mostly curious, is that a percentage that would move a project forward?

With an iPad, if you don't pay for 3G, there's no monthly fee, other than whatever you may be paying for wi-fi internet service at home. If you only use it where there's free wi-fi, then there are no fees whatsoever.
Apps can be free or can cost up to several dollars. Some apps have recurring fees due to continual updates (like some of the navigation apps). Books, videos, music downloads and the like can have widely-varying costs, but they only cost when you buy them. There's a lot of good stuff out there for free, so you can fill up your device for nothing, once it's been purchased.

This reminds me of a pollcwe did 7 years ago comparing online with magazines. Lots of people said they would never give up magazines in favor of online. Now it's different.

Smartphones are a different kettle of fish. If you want to use data services, you'll pay for how many GB of data you download. A single phone with unlimited minutes and 4 MB of download can cost about $100/month (or more, or less, depending upon your carrier). Messaging can also add costs, depending upon your usage.

RE: Do you own a tablet device?
iPad 1st gen, iPad 2nd gen, both jailbroken iPhone4 also jb. My ipad2 is my main carry and. It works great for my school projects such as HTML coding, APA papers, document making, powerpoint building etc etc, and posting as well as games and such. I have also found An rc setup app for dling certain setups on alot of vehicles. I prefer to carry an ipad over a laptop as its smaller and easier to use on the go. Plus with free tethering and wifi im online usually as i need to be. As for my iPhone, unlimited data, on 2 phones< my iPhone, and a BB storm2> 120.00 a month total.
