Default Field of dreams

Alright time for a trip into fantasy land.

A drunk driver just bought me 7 acres in the middle of nowhere with a pole building out back. - It was barely worth the pain involved but it's mine.
I plan on making a flying field for ultralights and R/C. There is nothing there but open space and grass, about 900'x 500'.
What would you do/install to make a perfect field?
The pole building is a good 100' from the road, so that will be the repair/build shop, also, obviously the "runway" is huge and without real boundries.
There is running water and toilet facilities.
WHAT WOULD YOU AD?

Start a private club with only 10-20 MAX... Each member you personally can allow or disallow.

They all sign a release form absolving you from ANY responsibility/liability.

Each person "donates" $75 a year and that money goes to buy either a mower or pays someone to mow it...

Wouldn't hurt to hook up a retired fella to do the lawncare.

Other than that... personal preference. Gas Grill, assembly/tuning tables with 12 AND 120 volts running to the tables. This way they can plug in their chargers, starters, glow heaters, etc... and not have to lug around a battery.

Just some ideas...

Electrical equipment such as PA system for those special events, hand sets for communication and a scanner.

For those grass runways.
Under ground sprinkler system and a roller would be nice.

As soon as the Lottery gives me my winning numbers its gonna be nothing short of amazing.

- semi-enclosed pit area with A/C and Heated rest area.
- electricity to the pits for chargers etc
- paved runway (full scale capale)
- grass runway
- landing lights embedded into the paved runway for twilight flyers
- mini control tower for safety officers and staff to observe
- full PA throughout the facility
- pond for float guys
- small gathering room with full utilities and small restaurant with views of the flightline.

this is just the beginning...

Does AMA have any publications that show proper or suggested layouts for flying fields?

Mordib,
I AM THE RETIRED GUY WHO WILL MOW IT.
A drunk driver really did buy me 7 acres, (insurance settlement) with a small house, garage, and a pole building out in back.
P-51 B Good suggestions!
It WILL have covered "pit", full workshop, water, bathroom, satalite t.v., internet access, coffee maker, killer mowing equipment and observatory/observation tower built onto the top of the pole building.
Other goodies?

Post #2, paragraph 6, or post #8, only paragraph?

THIS WILL NOT BE AN "AMA" FIELD.
The "AMA" will not have anything to do with this field.
This will be a private field, with invited guests.
I know a lot of folks fed up with the "local clubs", who want a place to fly without the "constraints" of the AMA.
People sometimes just want to fly, without having to worry about which side their switch is on, whether they did an AMA approved manouver, or whatever.

Strictly "fly for fun at your own risk".

Jett, what do you have for flyover area? 7 acres won't cut it. Wether your AMA sanctioned or not you should look at their field recommendations. They recommend that the center of the flight line be at least 1000' from any roads or building, 1000' can eat up acreage pretty quick. Our club is going through a new field lay out now so I'm pretty familiar with the requirements.

Yes, and for non-AMA types that may be reading this, the recommended --BUT NOT REQUIRED -- flying area is 2000 x 500 with a Safety Zone of 250' around 3 sides.
The total area for flying is 2500' x 750' or 1,875,000 sq. feet, or 43.04 acres. This DOES NOT include Pit, shelter, spectator and/or parking.
Just for a guide as to how much real space is needed.
My club has a 100 acres to overfly. Some crash outside the boundaries. Some fly out of sight.

Default Insurance Liability

If you don't follow AMA guidelines, doesn't that void out your insurance with them. Hit somebody or something and you're on the hook. Maybe you will be buying them their own airfield.

Dave, their field suggestions are just that, suggestions,. What you finally do is up to the club. But to not follow their suggestions is foolish and asking for trouble. The layout they prescribe keeps safety in mind.

Default Fields

Hossfly, RC-sport,
I have been to several AMA fields, and not one was as big, or had the fly-over area that my field will have. Even though they were AMA sponsored fields, they were in/near cities.
I realize the safetyy issues involved.
There really isn't anything to hit anywhere nearby, unless you are a 1. woodsy type animal waaay back in the back. 2. The ground- don't think it will object! 3. My/their own vehical, that's what the waiver is for.
THIS WILL NOT BE AN OPEN TO ALL AT ANYTIME FREE FOR ALL TYPE FIELD.
So, not brave, or stupid, just flyin'.
Thanks for your input and concern though.

Dave,

I don't belong to the AMA so their insurance isn't any good anyhow.
As I stated, nothing to hit, and I have really good insurance-that will pay out, so if I were to hurt someone, generally myself, it would be covered. Also, RC- see above post as to foolish AMA clubs. If we all had a 1000 acres to fly on, we'd all be land barons, happy land barons flyin' R/C.

Default Anyhoooo......

Guys/Gals,
This thread was to suggest items for an "ideal field".
It has turned to a discussion about the dread things that can and do happen, and I've thought about/covered these things.- DO YOU THINK AFTER HAVING GONE THROUGH HELL TO GET THIS PROPERTY, I'D JUST PASS IT ALONG VIA CARELESSNESS?
Not every one gets a second chance at life, much less with a flying field as the bonus!

RC,
thanks for your concern.
I won't end up like that drunk driver- she went on her happy way, and to this day could care less about what she did. Believe me, I have at least a little responsibility in my soul, even though sometimes my posts would indicate otherwise.
Having had kid no. 1 life flighted w/severe head injuries, broken back, ect., kid no. 2 broken jaw severe concussion, kids no. 3 and 4 only minor injuries (if there is such a thing for your children)
And myself without heartbeat for 3 mins. then revived and cut out of the wreckage for 45 mins. not to mention the permanent limp from a leg that would have been just as well amputated, I PROMISE YOU ALL I have the safety/liabilities issues covered.

Having said that, what would you suggest (from a FUN/CONVINIENCE standpoint)?

Having worked as an EMT, I am sorry for what you and your family went through. No one needs that. As for your field, you can get all kinds of suggestions from everyone, but I guess it all depends on the overal budget. Just build it to what you want. I would love to have my own flying field.

Put up a windsock. Some tables so you don't have to bend over to start your airplanes.
There is matting that can be put down to make a runway if you do not want to pave one.
