Default Review Scams?

Somebody named "woola", who has a member profile with no info to speak of, sent me this pm, keyed off my DR-1 post in the User Reviews. When I asked for the url of their company website so I could check them out, I got no reply. I think it's a scam. Anybody else been getting anything like this?

Subject: can you make a review for me?

Hi,

My name is Alicecally, coming from China. I’m the rep of Chinese Online shop just like dealextreme. We Know that you are a senior member in this forum and you have made a great contribution to the site and also have great reputation among the members.

Therefore, are you willing to write some reviews as usual if we send the rc helicopters to you for a low price you can accepte or even for free? you can write the reviews as a evaluating article or experience etc. feel free to contact us if you want more details.

Finally, we are famous Chinese online retailers. We provide a wide selection of electronic products at a low price with worldwide free shipping. We have warehouses both in Hong Kong and New Jersey.

Looking forward to your response.

Regards

That user name has some hits:

Seems odd that someone would introduce themselves as a rep ,want you to do reviews, and not even give you the company name, website, or links to the helicopters they sell.

[8D] I'll agree with everyone here who "smells a rat" in this , for all the obvious reasons , as well as this ;

I'm never one to take issue with someone's grammar , but in this case , the mistakes in the above passage don't make sense to me . They look almost to be on purpose , like a written script they were trying to make look like "Chinglish" . But there are problems . First no way did their spell check not catch the misspelling "accepte" , it even comes up with the red wiggly lines under it while I'm typing this post now . Also , that they know to use the letter A in all the right instances except for where it's absence would be most noticed , as in ""the rep of Chinese hobby shop" instead of "the rep of A Chinese hobby shop" in the second sentence . They then go on to use the A correctly twice in the third sentence , leaving it out only in the end of the run on sentence where they say "have great reputation among members" rather than "have A great rep..." .... Which is it , does their translation software not know proper English , or do they themselves only know half of where to put the A ? .... I would think if they were truly a native Chinese speaker who were trying to speak English with little knowledge of it , that they would make the same mistake every time that particular convention of speech arose , and not at the random times that appear in the post .

I may or may not be right about the purposefully fractured grammar , but it still has SCAM written all over it

They are from China and English is there second, third or fourth language.
Remember, the US is one of the few countries in the world where most people are mono-lingual.

"Accepte" may be a misspelling in English but that is not the only language in the world.
When I Googled it, it appears it may be a French word.

English is considered an easy language to learn and a difficult language to master.
In fact, few Americans have mastered it. Look at what is coming out of some of our current schools;
especially here in California.

That being said, I do think it is a bogus e-mail.

Good Luck,

There are several scam's running around RCU at any given moment. The one most predominate is the military guy looking for some free plane's for our soldier's. They are usually stationed in Afgan. Too many people now day's don't live by any adage of buyer beware, nothing's free, sound's to good to be true, etc. etc. Now day's everyone, almost, is to concerned with cheap and easy. Of course that's untill they get ripped off.

Pretty much anything on the internet that starts out with vague compliments is a scam. If someone actually is looking to do business with you, they are going to identify themselves and remind you how they know you first.

Default RE: Review Scams?

I received a very similar message, stating pretty much the same thing, other than that the offer was for a different product.

I don't recall the user-name, only that it sounded feminine, so I was a little surprised to see a male (and American-sounding) surname at the end. In rather broken English, I was offered free "high-performance" batteries, from a new Chinese distributor trying to enter the market, for me to use in pylon racing applications. If I was interested, I was to reply to make arrangements. As I recall, Iwas to agree to allow them to use my name (essentially for endorsement purposes) THEN, Iwould be charged shipping and handling, and be sent my set of batteries.

This seemed rather backwards to me. For an endorsement to be valid, they should first send me the batteries and give me time to use them, obtain feedback, etc. (prior to any endorsement). And, while I could see that he might identify me from my posts/threads as a builder and pylon racer, I never posted under Electric Pylon Racing. In my mind, if this offer was legitimate, these competitors would be a more appropriate demographic to approach with this offer.

Beings I race using YS 4-strokes, rather than electic set-ups, the only battery I use is a receiver pack. So, because the offer seemed incongruous; because I didn't view myself as being in the most appropriate "target market"; and, because I couldn't see how "high performance" battery packs would make much of a difference towards my application, I figured it wasn't worth the risk of possibly getting scammed.

My advice too, is to be wary.

The easiest person to sell to is a salesman. The easiest person to scam is a scammer. Think about this. I'm sure you can figure out a way to scam these people if you are of a mind to.

Was it the "Send free planes and equipment to me for the Soldiers" thread?

Here's the catch here:
"send rc helicopters to you for a low price you can accepte or even for free"

Obviously they have no desire to send them for free. These deals go something like this, "I have it ready to send to you for free, but my boss insists that you must send your credit card info to pay a minor shipping fee, and also to verify you." Y'all know what happens next.
