RE: NW TENN FLYERS
Snow in July! [:@][:@] Ahhhh, but we had it flying again in about an hour. Nothing a fresh tube of Quick Grip and 4 hands can't fix. LOL
Hey we put a watt meter on the TMax motors that come stock on the Tech Ones foamies today and they are pulling right at 400 watts. We found that our 3 cell 1300 mAh 40C discharge battery packs really do a good job with them.

The thing is absolutely a power hog though, at 400W! That's a good 36A draw, so yeah, you need at LEASt a 30C pack...and 40 would be better.

I probably sent this to ya before but here at the batteries we're using on the Tech One's. We get 4 to 4.5 minutes of flight time and that brings the batts down to 30% or so. http://www.valuehobby.com/power-syst...300mah-3s.html

It takes power to make power.
It takes power to make power.
Given some of the other issues I had building it, I'm...50/50 at best on it right now. But, we'll see. I'm going to give it some new batteries with plenty of power, and see if I can't make something out of it.
Don't get me wrong..it's a decent airplane...it's just not quite the winner I'd hoped for yet.

Now THAT'S funny. I had JUST found those, and was literally 30-ish seconds away from posting here asking if you guys knew about them.
Apparently you do! thanks for the heads up.

RE: NW TENN FLYERS
haha, that is funny. I would just about bet it's your batteries. Our Yak's go straight up for as long as you want to. Oh, what prop are you using? If' it's the stock one that came with the plane, toss it in the trash can. They are as good as a Zinger. [X(] Use the ones that Jim listed a few posts back. If you can't get any, I'll sell you a few at Mac's. You're more than welcome to try out my batteries too if wanted to wait that long.
Here's the props: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXLKW5&P=7

Yeah...hence why I'm not ready to write it off yet. Like I say...it's a decent airplane, so a few tweaks and changes here and there, and some good batts and props, and it may yet turn into the "winner" I'm hoping for.
As for the batts, I'm going to go ahead and order a bunch from VH. How soon do they normally get them to you guys? I'd LIKE to wait until Friday to order, but don't want to miss getting them in time. is a week enough?

Got plenty of props so I can cover you there as long as I don't fly with Jim till then. [X(][X(] hahaha
On the batts, we order on Monday and get them on Wed. or Thurs. They are just up in Illinois I think.

RE: NW TENN FLYERS
Ordered 8 new batts from Value Hobby today. 4 for the Yak/Slabby, 2 for Alex's plane, 2 for my Edge. That should do us pretty nicely, I think.
Looking forward to next weekend...can't wait!

RE: NW TENN FLYERS
*sigh*
So, today I was rigging up the extension/adapter harness for the lights on the slab foamy. Little Male to Female Deans thing, with a JSC plug inline for the lights. Simple, right?
So...got everything all lined up, soldered it all together, even remembered the heat shrink! Man..it looked fantastic...really nice job even if I do say so myself.
Except for the male connecter AT EACH END.
Dangit.
Cut heat shrink away, unsolder everything, oull wires away and clean them up, find a female connector, re-tin everything, solder it all back up (AGAIN remembering the heat shrink..4 for 4! I'm on a roll!) and admire things.
Ok, this time it's right!
Hook it up to the ESC, plug the battery in...what on EARTH is that strange smell?!?
Ok...I know what you're thinking...I released the magic smoke, right? NO! WRONG! I DID NOT!
I went right on past magic smoke...and released the MAGIC ELECTRON FLUID.
I've read a lot of threads about how to handle..and not handle...LiPo batteries, and the dangers they pose, and all that. I don't know which ones are true, and which are just stories...but I can assure you of this:
Hooking one up backwards to an ESC is a VERY bad idea.
I have no clue what it takes for a LiPo to start LEAKING FLUID......I don't even know what the **** the fluid is (I'm thinking it CAN'T be good) but by God, I did it. This...puddle...started forming around the battery, and it was getting REALLY hot. Apparently, it's possible to release the magic electron fluid before it has a chance to sublimate to magic smoke.
After the panic and mad scramble to unhook things settled down, I surveyed the damage.

- [*]The battery is...gooey. That's the only word for it. It was this mixture of solid and...not so solid.[*]The ESC looks fine. It's completely confused, and will never be able to spin a motor again. Oddly, it still arms itself though, and powers the Rx...[*]The motor is, amazingly, just fine. Runs like a charm on a different ESC.[*]The workbench has a nice "dent" in the fiberboard now. Whatever magic electron fluid is composed of, it's pretty caustic...[/list]

RE: NW TENN FLYERS
Man.
Good thing the forum was in read-only mode all weekend...took me until today just to recover from the weekend!
What a FANTASTIC weekend that was at Mac's. I really can NOT think of a single way in which it could have been better.
We all got to do a lot of flying, the company was fantastic, the camping arrangements worked well for everyone, we all went home with airplanes in one piece (well...ok...3-4 pieces and some glue...sorry Frank [:-] ) and the weather was epic.
Frank/Jim/Mac, thank you each for being a part of making Alex's 13th birthday a really spectacular weekend. REALLY looking forward to doing that again this season!

Ditto from this end here as well! We couldn't have had better weather to fly in. It was great seeing Alex flying his new plane on his birthday. What a weekend you made for him.......
As for my poor little foamy that you chewed up the rudder on, all I can say is Jim taught you well. LOL
