We always have a freeze fly on New Years Day, but today in N.C. its raining and has been all day long. It is a balmy 45 degrees, but who wants to fly in the rain? Glad to hear somebody is flying outside somewhere.

Reno Radio club had 7 hearty souls flying today. We cleaned the runway with a snowblower yesterday and enjoyed the fruits of our labor today!

I flew my first time on floats. After viewing the weather and temp I concluded that out snow will be on the ground for a long time so I mounted the floats to my Beaver and got 3 flights in a slight breeze. The visibility was terrible against the clouds and my hands got cold. Light dusting snow on third flight and had a bad landing. I still had a smile on my face as I walked in carrying the beaver. The floats on the snow are pretty cool. I got tracks all over the back yard. I was able to use a new battery pack too. This is probably the only plane I will fly on the snow this winter.

We had 7 guys show at the Charleston, IL Stoneflyers field. 4 of us flew. Larry Drake had a small electric biplane. Gary Pearson flew the Horizon foam electric Extra. My son, Nick, and I flew one flight each on my Aeroworks 1.20 Yak 54 with an MLD 28 for power. The weather was cold but fairly nice with an 6 MPH North wind. It was a little tough flying because everything was white. Snow, Sky, Trees with snow on them. We all had a couple of bowls of chilli and enjoyed each others company. We have a New Years day fly in every year. Just bring a plane and a bowl of chilli for the pot.

My wife got me the Flyzone Beaver with floats for Christmas. unfortunately, it is on back-order until February. Would have enjoyed flying it today on the snow.

Our club always has a polar bear fly in on the 1st. This year it was warm and raining. A few of the electric guys flew and we passed the transmitter around so several of us got just a little stick time in.

Our club does a Chili Fly on the first, regardless of the weather. I tell the club I'll be out there with a pot of chili and I'm going to fly and eat the chili, and if you all want to come out you're more than welcome. Some years it's been fairly nice, and then others it's not. This year is was pretty cold with a good breeze. We had 10 pilots come out, two pots of chili, everybody got a flight, and only one crash!! it was a good time. Keep in mind that we are in southwest Oklahoma, so our idea of cold is a lot less than others in the northern climates. 35 degrees is very cold for us!!!!

We do as Chili fly here in Georgetown, Texas. No matter what the weather, a couple of guys cook up pots of chili and others make cornbread and cookies etc. We get together to eat some good food and fly. It’s a fun time for those that attend.
