Default Faye Stilley

A friend gave me a book tonite that brought back memory's of my first attempt at covering a plane. It was hideous. Yellow was the only color I had and it was still ugly. I went out and bought a book by Faye Stilley, Covering R/C Airplanes. That's how I learned to cover rc airplanes. The friend gave me a copy of the same book tonite. I had looked it up on Amazon a few months ago and was stunned at the asking price, $75, used.

I haven't seen anything from Faye Stilley since getting back into flying a couple of years ago.I did a search and some photo's came up that look like his work, the work of a master.

Anyone know what happened to Faye Stilly?

I would have to agree, he is a master artist. I use tecniques I learned from his "Covering RC Airplanes" book everytime I cover an airplane.

I was wondering what had happened to him, I had been out of RC for about 10yrs and didn't know if he was still around. When I came back everything had changed, people were flying electrics, arf's ruled and RCM was gone.

When I was first getting into RC, my wife bought me a Falcon 56 for Christmas in 1976. I built the plane but was afraid to try MonoKote so I sheeted the whole thing. I did a really good job and then filled it with balsa filler and painted it. As the years went by, I got into MonoKote and somewhere along the line, I decided to sand the paint off the Falcon and MonoKote it. This thing turned out to be a lead sled. Man, is it heavy. But I still have it and it still flies like a Falcon 56, albeit a bit faster on the landings. Man, that thing must weigh seven pounds or so.

For some time Faye and Barbara have been missed at both Toledo and WRAM. I too have been concerned and was told Faye is retired, possibly due to health issues. I hope this is not true.

Faye Stilley's covering book shows up at a swap meet every now and then and it's way less than Amazon's $75. I saw one at our meet last fall for about $5 but when I came back to get it, already gone.

The first time I saw Amazon's $75 price tag I thought to myself "who in their right mind would pay $75 for a paperback book". I've had my copy for a little while now and I still reference it sometimes. I would love to someday be as good an artist at covering as Faye Stilley.
