RE: tape residue
I always use a hair dryer to heat the tape before removing. That softens the adhesive and prevents the paint from pulling loose. Also pull at 90 degrees from the tape line.

RE: tape residue
WD 40 will remove it if the paint was real dry before tape was applied but if it is imbedded in the paint the sticky will come off but the texture of the tape will remain in the finish.

Cool, guys. I already tried alcahol. It didn't work. I keep a can of lighter fluid for those cold mornings when glow engines are reluctant to start. A shot of lighter fluid and if an engine is gonna start at all, it will on that stuff. I'll try that and if it doesn't work, then WD40.

I've been using 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover part #08984 for many years with great success. It can be found at any automotive paint store and it's used to remove masking tape residue from automotive finishes.

pappyd6 is right on. I've been using the 3M product for years with excellent results. A recent project with automotive tape over a latex surface was a new challenge. The tape was pulling the latex paint off the primered surface. A bit of 3M and the tape literally fell of the latex. 3M Adhesive Remover can also serve as a Prepsol replacement . It's good for cleaning a surface just prior to spraying. You can get it at Ace Hardware stores. too.

+1
Also after you get the tape off try a carnouva liquid spray wax that you use on a vehicle and it will shine it right up and leave a protective coat that is fuel resistant, not fuel proof.

RE: tape residue
I use vegetable oil on a paper towel to remove glue from tape. It's oil solulable or at least all the goo that I have removed has been and comes off with little effort with a little Veg oil.

One more to add to the list of possibilities. In the architectural model making field we always used Bestine to soften and remove any kind of residue from tape or spray adhesive without damaging painted surfaces. Worked great.

RE: tape residue
Well, guys, since the airplane was in the house and the nearest thing I had that anyone had mentioned was vegetable oil, I tried some. It worked. If it loads, here is a picture of the same plane minus the tape residue and with a fuel filling capability added.
