You can still find those leather belts. There is a lumber mill in the USA that runs on steam and they use them.
And yes, the sound of that engine is very unique.

Those Fairbanks Morse hit and miss diesels are very unique parts of history.
Here's a 24hp 2-stroke diesel that was running (away) on crankcase oil and not diesel fuel. Oops.

Looks like the newer ULEV (ultra low emission vehicle) engines have some serious competition with this engine.
I got a kick out of the perfect smoke rings that it blows at times.
