Default Is this a new flying site in Florida?

We noticed these runways going in a few weeks ago in southern Volusia County, Florida. The runways are 680'-690' long. It appears to be set up as an R/C site with areas set up to stand in the middles of the runways, and a little overkill for an Ultralight field. Any rumors on whether it's a new big RC site?

Well. I'm not sure what that is, but if those runways are 680 feet long, the trees at the furthest point would only be about 400 feet away. Wouldn't it be very difficult to fly in that confined an area? I don't know anyone in my group who would fly there.

I hadn't looked at it that way. Depends what you're flying I guess. Just for kicks I took an image of the field where I learned to fly (480ft grass), scaled and overlayed it onto the paved runways at this new place. It looks positively roomy in comparison, but you make a good point.

Field comparison:

heck, where I fly here in Minnesota, we've got 500 foot tall windmills less than 200 feet from the runway... that field looks positively spacious.
I'd fly there

Our club has two parallel runways, the grass one is 600' and paved is 400'. The jet guys really wish it was the reverse. Maybe that's what it is, but I am betting ultra light. Or maybe a drone base......they are everywhere you know.

I can't believe anyone would consider that field small . Let me take you around the country and show you what a lot of people have to fly off of , of course you pay the travel bill . lol

A second comment : I'm not sure where you are flying in Mt Home now but when I was there the field was pretty small . And if I remember right the trees on the South (?) end were about 70 / 80 ft and about 100 ft from the runway . I'm sure glad you now have a better place to fly . ENJOY !!! RED

Up in the upper left of the picture is a car. Using the car for perspective I would say that those runways, or, a church foundation, is far too big for an RC airfield.

Looks spacious, to me.

The crosses on the ends of the runways indicate that the surface is closed to aircraft, as I recall. ... though such crosses are usually much larger than those in the picture.

Maybe. I have a hunch it's for ultralights. There's a lot of gyrocopter activity in the area too. I'm not sure it's "far too big" though - below is a scaled overlay of our local club's field that's on top of a landfill. It's 550' long:

Update: received word today that this is indeed a private RC field. I don't have the details, but apparently the owner of the property is an RCer.

With a field like that, if he doesn't have friends, he will soon.

I only wish that Florida was a little closer to me.

The X's would be there even if it were a full size airfield under construction.
And, I'd agree that they are a bit small. Looks like a heck of an RC field to me!
You might just be able to get a full size light AC in and out, depending on the height of the trees.

If he can afford a field like that, he has a lot of friends or "Hangers on".
I'm willing to be one.

Interesting.

Do you have the map coordinates or address?
