I've had a few big planes, a 106" Bud Nosen Cessna with a G-45 I used as a glider tug.
A 108" Cub with a G-23 and a 1/4 scale Triplane with a US-41.
It became a JOB to fly some big planes, transport, assemble and fly, disassemble, transport home, clean up, maintenance and storage.

My gas models are all in the 60 to 70 inch w/span (20cc) range as anything bigger would cause me major transportation problems. I find small gassers are usually quite user friendly and once properly tuned are super reliable plus gas fuel is so very inexpensive with very little if any after run cleanup. I resign myself to enjoying watching my friends fly their mini giants.

Hi karolh! Having retired to rural France I ran out of glow fuel and had to drive fifty miles to the nearest model shop to buy some more. The model shop is in a big city, Limoges, and I found it difficult to drive my two-tonne VW van through unfamiliar streets and that's not to mention the traffic and finding a place to park, so when I was next back in England, collecting my furniture, I bought twenty-five gallons of glow fuel from Southern Modelcraft which is handily placed between London and Dover. I will have to use all of this up before considering a gas engine!
Having sold my house in England I had a fair bit in the bank so I "invested " in three brand new Laser four-strokes so I'll have to stay with glow fuel for a while longer. Besides, now that many smaller models are now powered by electric motors and given that the larger ones now use gas engines, you can pick up some fine glow engines really cheaply these days. I have bought some good Enyas and Irvines off eBay and a new OS 40 rear exhaust engine from a club colleague.
My club has three ARTF trainers all powered by 40 or 46 two-strokes and a glider tug which uses a Super Tigre 25cc engine. We have recently started blending our own fuel using 11% oil. I thought that this was rather on the low side as the lowest oil content I had previously used was 15% so I checked with Jonathan Harper of Laser Engines to make sure that 11% was sufficient lubricant. He confirmed that 11% was fine given the quality of modern oils.
So when I've used up all of my 15% fuel I'll go over to the club's 11% mix and have a less slimey fuselage to clean!

Hi Telemaster, sounds like you've got all the bases covered to continue with glow power for quite awhile yet. I'm now in my 70's and find that the difference in seeing .46 size models versus a .90 or 1.20 size is so much easier plus the very high cost of glow fuel or even it's ingredients here just made the shift to bigger models and gas quite easy all around. I've always been a fan of Super Tigre engines and still have a few all of which are in excellent running condition and now that it seems like the brand might be on it's way I intend to hold on to them if only for posterity's sake.

your BIO. read close to mine even the time frame in which you did them. Those birds in the pics are real nice, welcome aboard!
Well my life is sort of settling down just about the time I was going to chill out my daughter calls in the middle of the night with a electrical fire, turns out the wrong size sockets were used and it over heated. heavier duty sockets have been installed and things are looking safer. One can't be too safe.
Maybe now I can get to work on my models.

The F-16 was a Byron. It was the third one made. And probably the first one that had retracts, I used Robart 90 degree rotating mechanical retracts for the mains and sonictronics air cylinders. I built a total of 16, Byron F-16's all together. The last one I had I used the fuse for a plug and made a mold that was the full length. Dennis Fuentes still has that mold. The F-100 is the same one that Art Johnson designed and built. We worked on both of them together, there were almost 100% identical. About the only difference was the way the Byron Fan unit was mounted. Mine the head of the engine was up, and his was down. I also used Rossi engines. I think Art used a Pico. It was kinda neat building two of the same models at the same time. The model was in the RCM magazine. We must have had 50 sheets of parts drawn. Art did all the drawing. I did most of the cutting using a router table with jigs. I threw the jigs away last year.

I never flew gas engines. A friend of mine had one of the Byron Pitts with a gas engine. He got a gas line leak and the front end of the plane melted away. Since then I have never had a foam plane. I do yous foam from wings. I usually sheet them or glass them. I did make about 12 jets using foam to make plugs. I still have most of the molds and plugs. Isn't worth making anything with them today, can't compete with Chinese The Epoxy I use is about $150 for just over a gal. But it's a lot better than WEST

I have two byron f-16s, a mig 15 and Art Johnson's F-100 kit but can't get to them for other builds in the way. here lately I haven't been able to build because of honeydo's. Today is the first day in a while I have some time the rain. won't let me do what I need on my vehicles so maybe my birds will get some attention. I have quite a few kits awaiting my attention.
I was in Orlando sometime ago and visited RC WORLD is it still in existence? I haven't heard a word about it in years. We almost bought a house there.

RC World no longer exist. The land was sold illegally, for $1.75 million, and screwed most of the stockholders. The group of guys that did it took some of the money and built this PRIVATE air field. IT's not an AMA sanctioned field. This was done in the last 6 months. The runway's cost about 1/2 million. If you look just to the upper left you'll see part of a large house that was built at the same time. I found this using using Google Earth, if you look at MapQuest it's just an empty field. It actually exist on 2 pieces of property with the middle of the runway on the property line.

I used to mow my runway with a tractor and bush hog. The tractor would knock down the grass that would stand back up the next day. So I would mow it again the next day straddling the tracks. So all to gather it would take 4 hours to mow the runway. Two years ago the tractor broke down and I can't get parts to fix it. So I mowed it with the DR walk behind that took 6 hours and is a lot of walking. But it looked so good. Last summer I bought the Cub Cadet garden tractor. It would take 4 hours to mow with it but it dose a great job. Yesterday I got my two pull behind mowers. Now I can get an 11' cut. Should take about 1 and 1/2 hours to mow the whole thing. The Cub Cadet is rated at 25 HP and the mowers are 13 HP each thats 52 HP . Whoopee....

Passed by not too far from you, Joe. Rode motorcycles with a friend heading from Eastern NM to Springfield, MO. We split up in Miami, OK, I headed north on KS-7 to Pawnee Station, KS, then on to US-69 to Overland Park, KS, to Kansas City, MO. Real pretty farmland and portions of Kansas roads were not on my GPS, looked like I was riding through someone's corn field. Good thing I had my road atlas. Your home looks like a familiar site here in NM and TX Panhandle.
That mower setup, seen that on some of the rural highway's easement grass cutting.
Regarding RC World, I remember seeing the ads, buy a home and fly your RC plane there. Kind of sad that the real estate promise soured. If sold illegally, is there no legal recourse? I'd think one would be better off finding a micropolis (small city / village / town with adequate services not too far away), where there is less fuss, no planned communities, and no encumbrances or reservations about model flying.

It was a long time ago when I visited RC WORLD quite by accident we were there to attend my daughters graduation ceremony from the navy training base and happened upon RC World. I was truly taken by the idea of it but had a odd feeling about the place in the back of my mind. I saw my first ducted fan bird flown with authority there, ... blew me away.
In retropect I am glad I did not make a home purchase. I understand they were hit by a Huricane also. Don't need any of that the tornado's here scare the H___ out me and is one of the reasons I am considering moving further west.
I have to give it to them though what they put up is very attractive. that runway looks very inviting.

Until I read what you said It never dawned on me but I came to the same conclusion here, I used two riding mowers they cut better, it was fun cutting and prepping my strip.
The grass is cut here lately by my neighbor for hay so my tractor and bush hog get little use and I haven't used my runway in the past few years.
Joe your CUB is looking good I would enjoy cranking up the engine one of my favorite things to do.

I been involved since it started and know the complete history. There's not a lot I can talk about right now, but in the near future the information will be posted. Yes, the hurricane destroyed the clubhouse. The clubhouse was built the correct way to with stand winds to 120 mph. But the guys built a garage made of wood. When the hurricane hit it destroyed the garage and the wind blew the debris into the clubhouse. We got $37,000 from the insurance. Then we installed a metal Butler building. That was a waist of money. If you were inside of when it rained. It sounded like a million hammers beating on it. We were considered the only building in Orange County to be destroyed by the hurricane. The people that were involved with RC World throughout the complete history were all a bunch of crooks. Two are now dead. but two are still alive. A good friend of mine actually put up the money to pay for the property. In Dec of 83, he actually bought one of the 20 lots to build a house on and was giving it to me, as a gift. He got out of it in the summer of 84, when I had moved to LA area, and told me he was getting his money back as he had a demand note. That when he told me about the lot. It was after that when the real crooks got involved. The history of RC World will probably be written up as an article. Of the 4 crooks that did this one now lives in Top of the World. What he did almost almost affected every modeler in the US.

I just ordered stuff from Tower Hobbies what a bunch of crap it took over an hour to get through there stupid pass word crap. I don't see why they are not happy to have the customer just give them the name, address, phone # and credit card info and place the order. But no they want an stupid account. I am going to try some one else next time that is just plane stupid. It is just a big pointless hassle for there customers.

It's called PCI compliancy. They have to have some form of account to encrypt your credit card information, and for tracking purposes. Beware of any company that takes credit card information without creating some form of account for you. If they get hacked, they will have all your credit card information.
If you think it was hard for you, imagine what they have to do just to sell things online to allow you to pay with a credit card. I work for a company that does a lot of online and catalog sales, so I know what is behind the scenes.

I ordered from Tower last week. Finding the product and then ordering, took less than 5 minutes.
It was when I tried to order from BUSA that I ran into problems. LOL
Once I figured it out my order went smoothly. The embarrassing part was that the difficulties were of my own making.

Anytime CC or SSN is required online, the data must be encrypted. Even if it is just held until the transaction is completed they require it. It is not as simple as one would think. A lot of online sellers use a central system managed by one company to avoid all the hassles it entails. That one company bears the brunt of PCI and CC/SSN responsibility. If there is a breach and someone steals CC or SSN information the price to pay is extremely high.
