Default More idiot quad copter flyers hinder California fire fighters

Just saw the report on that terrible fire in CA that jumped the freeway burning 26 vehicles.
Apparantly, there were at least 4 "hobby drones" that prevented water bombers from getting in to drop their loads.
if you're one of the ****ing morons who was out there flying and are now reading this, listen up.
STOP, JUST STOP YOU IDIOTS !!!
You people are going to ruin the hobby for all of us. The Feds will come down and it'll be over.
I urge anyone who knows who these stupid idiots are to report them to law enforcement officials immediately. They should be held responsible for the losse on the freeway.

This doesn't apply to the tens of thousands of responsible quad copter enthusiast.
That is all.

I saw the fire report yesterday and also another story on ABC World News about someone mounting a pistol on one and shooting it-I hope the backlash from these acts do not end up prohibiting the way most of us enjoy the sport responsibly.

Seems like AMA is playing "Turtle", it does not help for them to remain quiet on this subject. Think I will contact my District VP today. They should be doing everything possible to stop these guys, NOW!

Called AMA this am, I was informed they are having their PR company draft a letter for release. GREAT, perhaps in a week or so a general release will come, long after the news cycle is over and the press is onto something else.

Seems like they do not understand how it works????? If something really bad happens are they going to wait weeks to respond?

If you use really, really long ones, you might be able to get by with smaller diameter lines and the centrifugal force will be manageable. There is a fascinating YouTube video of a guy at Brokak flying an 80" span Flite Streak with a 1.08.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the people operating those "hobby drones" were the news media so they could get the video for their report?

I recall a number of threads about irresponsible drone pilots in this forum over that last few years. I think we all saw this kind of stupidity becoming more common place as drones got cheaper and more available. I was one who wanted them out from under the AMA to protect those of us who fly airplanes but it seems the AMA is dollar driven and not memberships best interests driven. The problem will continue to get worse until some numbskull downs an airplane and kills a lot of people.

I agree that the AMA is dropping the ball on this. So much so that what's on the cover of MA this month - a quad!
Guess they need the ad dollars to continue educating these "new" hobby flyers. We all know how well that's going!

I live in California where there have been a lot of fires. It's a shame that water carrying planes and choppers have to be grounded when these guys are in the fire zones. I hear that they are going to fine these guys $1000.00. I think they should shot them out of the sky when they spot them. Than fine the guys.Or have them pay for the planes sitting on the ground waiting for clear skies. I"m sure a there are great bunch of guys out there that fly drones, quad's who would never thing about doing something so dumb. Just my 2 cents on these guys.

So the AMA is dropping the ball because they have a picture of a remote control model capable of flight on it's cover?

To tell the truth, I never heard. They may have. Sometimes it takes awhile to get back to the public about these things, or they don't want to say until they really get the person or person's involved.

like all rules and regulation it only effects the ones that follow them. most of these guys may not even know or care much about the planes or rc cars. they goto a hobby shop and buy a multi rotor (not a drone). We in the hobby need to stop calling these multi rotors drones.

I think there needs to be a general sport license that is done by the hobby shop selling these. IE: a 20 minute video and sign some paper work saying you ownt fly these in a way to cause harm type of thing or be fined. Thoughts?

Wont work as you can get them on flea-bay, amazon and wally-world, tgt, might just take one out with a good shot gun and #6 buck.
but then you would be the bad guy, and end up in the slammer

Cheers

I wonder if there is any sort of rx jamming device that would render the things inoperative then when they fall to the ground you can smash them or start shooting them out of the air. I would think if the authorities get serious about doing something aside from complaining about this and handing out some 1000 fines or higher that the practices might subside. That and the loss of a copter or two by angry bystanders might smarten up some brain dead individuals...

The Germans have a mobile laser weapon designed specially to shoot down drones. Goggle it if you think I'm wrong.

sounds good to me... i can not imagine that any of these a-holes would have the nuts to raise an issue if their copters inadvertently got destroyed...
