Covering??
Hello Fellow Fliers:
Coming back to the hobby after a 5 year hiatus... adjusting to all the new gadgets and radios lol
I am trying to re-cover some of my planes but last time I checked Monokote was not what it used to be.... So what is the new standard for covering balsa planes?
Regards,
Patrick

For the larger planes you can not beat Solartex (Colortex and Worldtex appear to be the same type covering) for ease of application and durability. Can also be easily painted with most any type paint should you desire. It does not need to be painted as it is prefinished.

Not much changed; still use Top Flite Monokote for most applications; Econokote for fragile structures or where low heat is required such as foam wings.
Biased opinion in that I tried Ultracote/Oracover and was dissatisfied with the edges lifting especially in oily environments thus requiring larger overlapping seams, has a limited color selection, and that excess material does not trim off as easily as with other films.

I get it at Value Hobby. They rename it "Neucover", but it is the same as the Hobby King covering and you aren't subjected to the games that HK plays. It is the best I have ever used and another advantage is that they ship in without a cardboard core in it. It evidently is taken from a large roll and if you order multiple rolls of it, it comes as one continuous huge roll. I once ordered 3 of the Value Hobby stuff and I got almost 50 feet all on one roll. I loved it.

I covered a quarter scale plane with Value Hobby covering. I used solid color red and their checker board covering. It covered as well as the name brand products. I think the covering is a little thicker than Monocoat. Only minor problem I had was white glue seam where two pieces joined. Acetone or alcohol on paper wipe of seam cleaned up glue .
