Crazy Idea: Aircraft Carrier
I was thinking today while watching the new Hobby-Lobby T5 takeoff using a winch that It would be cool to make an Aircraft Carrier for RC planes.
This would require a winch launching system mounted under the AC, and some type of loose rubber band or rope to stop the plane.
You would have to build a hook that would go on the bottom of your plane near the CG, so your plane does not topple over when you try to stop.
I thought it would just be really cool to be doing persision landings on one of these model ones.
Now, what would be cooler is if you had a pond or lake near your feild, and made the carrier RC too.
That would be a real challenge, as if you come in to low, you'll plow into the side of the boat. To high with not enough speed and you'll stall trying to come out.
Oh well, I doubt this will ever happen, but I just thought it was a cool idea =)

Some years ago, A modeler down Texas way, built an Aircraft Carrier and flew 40 size corsairs off of it...Was an article in a magazine that spoke of it...Can't remember which mag it was...They also landed on it and the planes had tail hooks..Interesting idea if you have the room to build one....Will look around thru my mags and see if I can find the article...

When I first joined RCU there was a topic on this.
Someone posted up pictures of one made many years ago that was built on a small boat. Very interesting pictures.

WHOA!
I had no idea there was anything like this already made.
I figured that someone had thought of it before, but not made it.
Wish I could find some more pictures online of one.

That's really cool! A neighbor told me that he saw a guy fly RC jets off of a make shift carrier on the Discovery channel. Did anyone here see that show?

Because of all the rain, there wasn't much opportunity to tow the carrier out onto the flying field for guys to try their luck at arrested landings. The carrier survived the flood in pretty good condition except for being very dirty. The following spring, before we could get to it to clean it up, a storm toppled a huge tree that had been killed by the flood over onto the carrier and smashed it flat in the middle. That was the demise of the carrier and its remains were drug off to a remote portion of the property and left to rot.
This carrier, if memory serves, was 45 feet long on the deck and 14 feet wide. with both sides of the deck rigged to fold down to make it legal to transport on public roads. The guys in Texas did a great job of constructing their own custom trailer and dressing it up to look like a WWII escort carrier. 45' by 14' sounds like a fairly large area to land on but I can tell you, it was like trying to set down on a postage stamp. I came close to catching an arresting wire on a number of occasions but never made a successful arrested landing. In fact, only one of our guys was successful and he did it with my airplane! I was flying a Dynaflite fun-scale Corsair with a Supertigre .91 engine in it.
My Dynaflite Corsair had been purpose built with a retractable tail wheel for doing arrested landings. We had already been playing with arrested landings with cable just set up on the grass (before we went to get the carrier). It was enormous fun but we had a great deal of trouble trying to get other club members interested in it too. Never happened. In fact, rather than jumping in and trying it themselves, most of the other club members pitched a fit every time we set up the arresting cables or took the carrier out onto the field. I suspect you would face the same thing at your club.
It is not necessary to have the arresting cable !QUOT!near the CG!QUOT!. Mine were aft of the tailwheel where they are on the real Corsair. We also made some plywood hook mounts that would bolt in the same location as the wing mounting bolts. Planes did not have to have retractable hooks. We found that even hooks that drug on the ground worked just fine.

Where exactly was/is the field in St. Louis. I lived in St. Charles county from '86-96 or so, down off Hwy 94 in the Harverster area. The flood in '93 was huge, then again in '95. Flew small full scale around the area a few times and the amount of flooded ground was staggering. And the fact that it was flooded for soooooo long.
I would have liked to see your carrier

the controle line dudes have been doing carrier competitions for about a half century, 'bout time r/c picked it up.
i've got a popular mechanix mag from the '50s with plans for a PT-19 "carrier trainer" that even shows how to setup the engine with dual needle valves for speed control. i would assume that today they use throttled engines to lower the engine speed for the landing.

Philly and Steve:
The picture of the man standing on the carrier is not the one I was talking about...Probably the one that was picked up in Texas, was the one...I remember the flood of 93...Up here in Des Moines,Ia,we didn't have any drinking water for over a week...The public water works went under water...the levee broke...Our flying field was under 6' of water....I worked for the county,Sec'd roads div., and most of that time ,I was hauling sand bags here and there...Also drinking water..Our National Guard did one heck of a job too....Don't think I want too see another flood like we had in 93..One is enough..............

Some background info on the photo: I don't recall the date, but the story and photos ran in MAN. I believe this was back in the early to mid 70's. The pilot in the picture was "Doc" Brooke, a well known RC pilot and competitor some years back. This unusual occasion was the result of a Naval Reserve Unit out in California wanting something unique for a Navy Day Celebration and Parade, and made a replica of an aircraft carrier. The "carrier" shown in the photo was actually a converted Navy shuttle boat, the kind used to ferry personnel back and forth. A scale flight deck and superstructure was added to the hull. The craft was fully operational and was a great recruiting tool. During the festivities a few local area RC pilots were invited to try their hands at Carrier Landings and among those that accepted the challenge was Doc Brooke and his Corsair.
The "carrier," cruised offshore close enough that the spectators on land could see the event. Pilots were aboard the carrier," with the aircraft on shore with pit crews. When ready, the pilots took off from shore one at a time, flew out to land on the "carrier" deck. Each plane was fitted with a Landing Hook as they were using the Arresting Cables on the "model" deck.
A chase and retrieval boat followed astern. The wind was up and and the water choppy, and the pilots had assistants holding onto them while they made their landing attempts. Some didn't make it and ditched, others flew back to shore and landed. The photo was taken just before Doc Brooke's Corsair snagged the first cable, making as I recall, the only arrested landing of the day, earning himself gold Naval Aviator's Wings presented by the Base Commander.

sorry to say but tooooooo easy with the current funfly planes, scale jobs like above, you will see my cap is off for you sir!
having said that it's amazing to goto diffrent clubs and see just how hard some people make landing look.

I've been flying full scale for a while now, and every once in a while my instructer, and I will fly up the Hudson River Corridor. Let me tell you even in a little 152, flying over the Intrepid at 500' there is no way I would even think about trying to land on that thing. That said I would love to play around on a mock up with some RC that would be Cool. Really great picture guys, thanks, made my day.

i don't get it, we do dead stick spot landing at our club, to be in with a chance you need to get under .5m, if you've got a funfly that can hover, whats the problem? 20mph just makes it easier
gonna have to take a plastic table to our field some time and let my Cougar loose on it

easy enough to make a wire for stopping, attach tail hook to plane, and use sand bags for stopping, u can do this on an asphalt runway or a grass field, spread 2 sand bags about 15 - 25 feet aprt and attach a thin rope between them, depending on size of plane will determine size of sand bags

RE: Crazy Idea: Aircraft Carrier
My neighbors and I play carrier ops with our models. IT IS SO MUCH FUN!!! We have a mowed out area of grass that is about 60' by 10'. There is a ditch on one side of the landing area and his hangar is on the other side(we live on an airport, hence the hangar). We put six stakes into the ground along the sides of the landing area (3 per side) where they would be on a real carrier. Then we double up 6 rubberbands per stake and tie some nylon cord to the rubberbands. Then we stretch them across the deck. We also put something under the rubberbands to raise the cord above the ground far enough to catch the wire and also roll over it. Then we start all of our models and line them up on the deck like the WWII aircraft did on those carriers. We all takeoff one after another or two at a time. We go fly around and do whatever or just do traffic patterns because it is so much fun. We all get into the pattern and try to catch one of the three wires. When we catch the wire we have to hurry and takeoff or get out of the way before the next plane comes. None of us have hooks. The tail wheel wire works very well because we all use tail draggers. The tail wheel wire catches at least 95% of the time. It even gets caught taxing over it so we usually have to add down elevator and taxi over it with the tailwheel in the air. You guys should try it some time. IT IS SO MUCH FUN!!!! After doing this for at least a year and a half now it has greatly improved our flying and landing skills. All of my neighbors and myself have become VERY GOOD at spot landing and flying in small areas between buildings and ditches areas. Once again it is one of the most fun things you can do with RC aircraft and I encourage everyone to get a group together and try this!! We have also tried this with nosedragger aircraft. We had to add a hook but it worked just as well as the taildraggers. Most of our planes also have a bomb drop to have bombing competitions and for other bombing and dropping purposes. Here are the aircraft we have flown landings with:
1.Heavily Modified Great planes Piet n' Poke, now called the Piet N' Pole. If you build this kit the normal way it will work just as well. The reason it is modified is for hard core aerobatic flight and carrying heavy loads (such as water bombing).
2.Two Great planes Slow Pokes. This aircraft and the Piet N' Pole are VERY WELL BUILT AND VERY NICE MODELS!!! The great planes pictures of these aircraft don't do either of them much justice but they are probably the best two models I have ever owned.
3.Hangar 9 Twist ARF
4.Hangar 9 J-3 Cub and a Carl Goldberg J-3 Cub.
5.KAOS (not sure who builds it) This aircraft does have a nose wheel but stops in time before running off the deck or catches the wire with the nosewheel.
6.Blue Max
7.PT-40 trainer. This is the aircraft that had the tailhook on it.
There are also some other new aircraft every now and then.
Once again I encourage everyone to try this. YOU WILL HAVE A BLAST!!! I will try to take some pictures next time we do this and upload them.
