Default Our field burned down

Everyones heard of the California Fires and the damage it's caused. One relativly minor casualty is our flying field. The Pin Box,Brand new 10 x 50' wooden awning, electrical connection, Cell Phone are gone. The carpeting that covered the dirt and kept the dust down is a black sticky mess. Tables are toast. Starting stands are gone as well. Looks like we will be down a couple of weeks. The Mirimar RC flyers will rebuild. The Asphalt is reported to be OK.
Small potatoes compared to what some people have lost.

One thing, the Marines have banned smoking due to concerns over a possible fire in the brush (we have to save the native california ticks) I dont think that will be much of a concern for a while.

I am sorry about the loss but like you stated there are a lot worse cases of loss. I grew up down there and seeing all this destruction is just making me sick and my heart and prayers go out to all of you. What a beautiful area to be lost for such a long time, never will be the same.

Ouch, sounds like you had a nice setup before. Well, have to make it over again.

I've got a couple of sheets of plywood laying around that will donated for the first few tables. We need to get the electric and phone up because we have to get all the planes down when the marines call. real jets obviously take precident here.
I hear one of the other fields in SD allso was burned out. We will get it together.
I cant feel too bad , one of my co-workers has had to evacuate his home for the last 3 nights because he was in the path of the fire. It looks as if the wind patterns have changed and he might be able to go home in a couple of days. This fire was unstopppable.

Formerly from Long Beach and know the area well. My heartfelt sympathy for your loss. As all determined RCers will, I know you will overcome the setback. I live in the mountains of AZ and we are constantly under threat and have had some large blazes but nothing as bad as SoCal. Hang in there.

You might want to try and contact the AMA's Flying Site Assistance group and see if you can qualify to get a couple of bucks to help fix the field.

It seems that due to 9-11 we are only allowed to take active duty, retirees, and current DOD employees as permanant members. Guests are allowed with escort. I dont know if its right to ask for general type funds for a semi exclusive field. Not my rules... thats why I'm not active any longer. Thanks for the suggestion though.
On the bright side I guess it's time to meet some of the guys from some of the few remaining fields.

it isn't an AMA field is it? If that is the case, then you probably will loose your AMA charter anyway, at least from my understanding... Page 7 and 10 of 30,

I attest that my club has an open membership regardless of race, color, creed, national origin, gender, age, or
disability.

I dont know, AMA membership is required. There is no discrimination based apon any of the criteria you mentioned. It's federal land, currently under the jurisdiction of the Marine Corps. The Marines set the ground rules. I've only been there for a month or so. I'm just getting back after a 15 year break. If nothing elas comes of it it was good to help me get re qualified.
There seems to be a lot of nonsense going on there, I cant get a good feel for what is going to be done to repair the damage and how it will be accomplished . Rather than get myself all wrapped up in it I'm going to make some calls and meet some of the other modelers in the area. This is SUPPOSED to be fun, its not rocket science and its not politcs.
BTW the other R/C club at Pendelton does allow civillians but maintains a 2/3 majority of DOD/ military personel. Like I said I dont make the rules, I dont necessarily like them either but thats how it is.

I belong to the Simi Valley Flyers and the Simi Valley fire visited our flying field and burned all the brush around it but spared the field itself. The only casualty seems to be the plastic outhouse. Check it out. www.simiflyers.com

You could come to our field, but Texas might be a little of a drive for sunday.

I used to live in the Concord area a long time ago. Not that it means anything, but I'm sure anybody in the US is concerned about CA.

Whell I did once live in Dallas for a year. And as the song goes " all my x's live in Texas".
I'm going to meet some of the guys at a strip a mile from home. I thought it was closed because iI never see anyone there. It's smaller, the lower freq' sometimes get hit, But it's convenient. I'm on 46&48 so it shouldn't matter. Nothing wrong with meeting new people.
My friend was allowed to return to his home today, he and his family were evacuated saturday.
All the good local campgrounds burned up which allso happens to be some of the best scenic motorcycling roads in San Diego.
Overall the situation is improving, the trees will grow back....
